In this C4D quick tip I'll show you how to UV unwrap this simple model in the easiest way possible. UV unwrapping is a dreaded but essential part of 3d modeling, which is why it's important to at least understand how to approach it in the most basic way. And this is what I'm showing you here! I use this method on pretty much every model that I have and it works good enough 100% of the time.

This channel deserves to blow up and I'm sure it will be one of those channels I look at in a year or two and think "Wow, I remember when he had less than 5k subsribers, look at him now.". Honestly, you're doing a brilliant job, the way you're presenting, explaining and choosing your topics is spot on. Maybe a bit fast but there's a pause button for that. I have a question, when I select the edges on my model, and click UV Unwrap, the Texture does not unwrap like yours does, am I missing a step? All I do is select along the edges and click "UV Unwrap...?" I have "Restrict to Polygon Selection" Also checked. Please help! Thank you

Hmm, you can bodypaint, save it as an image file, then bring the image file into your texture and mix it with a procedural node

Thanks! Good question, I've never worked with Rizum but I can guarantee that if it's dedicated to UV work than it's definitely better!

How did you learn about UV unwrapping? Is there some underground lodge where only the initiated get to know this dark knowlegde in exchange for virgin blood?

My virgin blood aside, I can't remember which video it was but I watched someone show the "rest UVs" technique and from there everything clicked. However I really can't say I know all about UVs, I just know what I need to know and usually that's enough!

@@NewPlastic heyaa there! i have tried this method and still had trouble with the edge selection for irregular models :-S Within blender it's possible to do this process automatically with 'smart uv project' thx for ur tutorials!!

@@cecisariol Yessir the UV unwrapping system has gotten much easier in the last couple of years - here I'm working with C4D r20 which is already a few years old. However, sometimes the automatic setup doesn't quite get it the way you would want it to be, especially if you need specific seams, so it's good to know how to do it manually.

Hey! I hear you brother, but I feel like the toon shader in Octane is very cumbersome and underwhelming. It probably mostly has to do with the fact that I never was inspired enough by it to deeply learn it. Especially after switching to Octane from Arnold, which has an incredible toon shader. But generally, I feel like toon shader in the 3d world are still too undeveloped and lacking many nuances that 2d style has. I think I read that Octane are working on a new toon-shader which will come out soon, so hopefully there's something to look for!

Nope, a line will always be there, you just have to find a way to hide it from camera

@@NewPlastic I am getting this annoying error "Relax UV error an edge is shared by more than two polygons" I have no idea what's going on HELP!!!

@@TheDede508 That's a pretty easy fix. In the Attributes window, select the Mode menu and then Modeling. Then go to the Mesh Checking tab and check Enable Mesh Check. This will colorize the issues, I think for you you'll need to check the Non-Manifold, which, amongst other things, is an edge that shares more than one polygon. Once you find it delete one of the polygons or find a way to connect them better if you cant delete it.

@@NewPlastic it's big model of a building, when I delete it, it leaves a bunch of holes everywhere, I'm not sure how to connect them together, I tried optimizing it but no dice, not sure what to do.

Hah you can also auto-unwrap (especially in the newer versions) but I sometimes need more control on the way the object is unwrapped. With this method I have more control.

Hey Arthur! Appreciate your comment, the reason I go fast is because that's how I usually like to watch tutorials. I prefer when the tutor goes straight to the point and assumes I know basic stuff so I can get the general idea of what they're trying to achieve. That's why the parts that are dragged (like when I'm selecting the edges) I fast forward really fast because the point of the tutorial is not to teach how to create edge selections. But I make sure that I at least explain my approach to what I'm doing as I'm doing it. Whenever there's an important part, like clicking a certain button or something, I slow it down.
