After months away from posting, I'm back with another short tutorial. I've been hard at work editing a feature film and creating visual effects for it, but hopefully I will be back after the beginning of the year with regular posts.
In this quick tutorial I'll show you how to create an easy smoke or fog simulation without rigging complicated particle systems or having to fork out the bucks for expensive plugins. HOWEVER this is just a major CHEAT for flat 2.5D compositing. There is no interaction with the texture, so there is a downside to this quick and dirty hack, but I found using Cinema 4D Noise Shaders and Layers created a far more realistic texture than anything I could create in After Effects.
- Enjoy!

OH DUDE! I totally forgot about this sort of thing. Plus this technique can be used in more ways, like making grunge textures, or fog/smoke textures, and they don't even need to render all frames either, because each frame is different, it's an endless supply of textures haha. Thankyou!

Just quick question, will light affect the color of the fog ? Or do i have to manually just pick a color for the fog in the material menu ?

Great video. Question, if the fog hits a text would it collide or just go through it?

This technique is strictly a texture map projected onto geometry. It is not a particle simulation, therefore there is no interaction with objects. It's merely a quick way to generate fake atmosphere. I am planning on releasing an update to this tutorial soon which builds on the same idea but allows the fog to be generated in 3D space.

When I apply my material to the plane, it looks as though it is tiled - also, it's very bright. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Are you preferring this result to what you might accomplish just using fractal noise in AE?
@SioPioVideos
@SioPioVideos 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Moccia I find AE Fractal Noise has a very unique "look" to it and it's easy to spot as "Oh hey that's AE fractal noise". I feel like I can get a more organic natural pattern using this technique.
@MocciaJ
@MocciaJ 8 жыл бұрын
+SioPioVideos I can see that, but I imagine if you piled on 6 instances of varied fractal noise settings you could get a pretty sophisticated, organic feel. I do know what you mean though, and the same could be said for C4D noises if not combined together. In any case your results are very nice.

+Joe Moccia Thanks. Yeah. Same principle going on here. But this offers a solution for people without AE and for those of us who can spot Fractal Noise pattern no matter how many times it's stacked :)
