Fun fact: The guy playing King George is Laurence Fox, a somewhat successful TV actor who in recent years decided to throw it all away by becoming what is basically the British Ben Shapiro.

It’s funny how now in letters it’s seen that Wallis thought she was a prisoner to Edward and was actually in love with her ex husband Ernest and regret ever meeting the prince

From the perspective of being a counterpoint to the King's Speech, I'm just reminded of that old saying: "The best way to kill an idea is to defend it incompetently." It's possible that there's a way to sympathetically portray Wallace and Edward's romance, despite their... problematic... political associations, but if so, this ain't the way to do it.

Fun fact: My great-grandmother actually knew Wallis, and had been a romantic rival of hers for the affections of an up-and-coming Argentinian diplomat (oddly enough, a political ally of Juan and Evita Peron). My great-grandmother won his heart. I did not get the impression she had a good opinion of Wallis, or Edward for that matter.

This movie is choc-a-bloc with actors who had way bigger things to come in the rest of the decade: Andrea Riseborough, Natalie Dormer, Oscar Isaac...and yet Madonna's career went downward.

so, Madonna tried to make Marie Antoinette but didn't have the skill.

Seems like Madonna saw "Julie and Julia" and thought she would make a better version

For a second I thought this was a new episode and was prepared to learn that Madonna had made a film during the pandemic that I had managed to completely miss

Of course, Madonna completely ignored Wallis Simpson's own letters to her ex husband. She was trapped in her own web. She thought Edward was a complete ass and thought he would be worth some fun and get $$$$ to boot. Ended up having to be with him the rest of his life. Edward didn't want to do anything but party, wanted the riches of a king with no responsibilities. What do you do with all play and no work? Endless empty dinner parties. Wallis ended up hated by a country, and hating Edward

If I had a nickel every time Madonna made a movie about a scandalous beauty queen from history who was infamous for nazi sympathizing, I’d have two nickels.

Cinemadonna is one of Todd’s best series in my humble opinion. If you’re a newer fan of his and haven’t given the series a watch I would highly recommend it. It’s a very fun watch
