Well, I could hardly expect two English guys to have not seen this film. It's iconic as hell. I can remember watching it for the first time *way* back in the early '80s, and at that time it seemed so *out there* that I didn't laugh at first. The humor was so different that it took a while to sink in, and on the second time I just about burst a lung laughing so much.

"I'm not dead yet" 😂. That scene has always stuck with me.

Comedies age very poorly in general. If it is still funny 20 or 30 years later, it is truly a great comedy. The Monty Python films are timeless classics and never get old for me. Best comedy troupe of all time, no question.

My favorite part of this movie is how they say, "Run away!" instead of "Retreat!" or "Fall back!" or something you'd hear in most movies like this.

Joke-wise, the guards who can't understand basic instructions is ageless. I can't count the number of times I've encountered people in life that made me think they were those guards, where I just think, "No no... Listen to what I'm saying..."

This movie is my childhood!! My family still quotes python anytime we're together. I've now shown this to my daughter a bunch of times, Love it so much. This, "and now for something completely different" are my favourites.

The guy running in the same spot and then suddenly appearing at the guards and killing everybody is my absolute favourite.

Brilliant, thank you! You must, must, MUST watch "Time Bandits" (1981) - a Python movie by proxy, hugely creative, weird, and such great fun. It's kind of forgotten but deserves more love.

I saw this as a teenager when it came out in theaters, knowing nothing about Monty Python; I just liked the ad for it in the newspaper. It's literally one of the movies that changed my life. I still love every second of it.

This is also one of those films that gets better when you rewatch it because you get some of the other jokes you may have missed the first time. I.E. The knight that killed The Historian is the only one actually riding a horse. Arthur and Bedivere rode a boat to Castle Argh but then easily walked back across. I first saw this with a friend of mine at around 12 years old, when the animator died we fucking lost it and put that scene on repeat so many times.

I try to categorize this kind of humor as "absurd" humor, and Monty Python just did it the best. The only other movie that comes this high that springs to mind is Airplane!.

This movie is one of the few comedies that I actually laugh even though I know the jokes coming up. Its so silly, I love it. Comedies are rarely funny for me.

I watched this for the first time in my early 20s (about 15 years ago) with two friends, one who saw it before and one who didn’t… The one who did see it lied and said the movie was 3 hours long. So, when we got to the ending 90-ish minutes in and there was nothing left, I wanted to smack him…but I laughed my ass off so hard during that whole movie, I bought myself the DVD as soon as I found a copy… SO classic!!!

Such a hilarious movie. And every time I watch it, I notice a new thing. Like how the end is a literal “cop-out”. Plus Patsy saying “it’s only a model” he means it - because it is a model. Also the first time they meet the French, when they film him talking - he’s not standing at a castle wall, but he’s standing behind a stone wall on the ground at ground level and they just angled the camera to make it look like he was standing at a castle wall. Reading about the behind the scenes stuff, really make me appreciate and love this movie even more. Everything from the acting to the animations.

I love the song about Sir Robin, sung by Neil Innes. It is genius!

I’ve never heard Monty Python called “innocent” before. They were and still are incredibly subversive. They just aren’t as mean spirited on the surface as more modern humor.

One of my most favorite movies and this one breaks the fourth wall

It’s a 9+ from me. It’s low budget and silly but cinematic. The satire is clever but there’s daft humour as well. The titles & animations are great, the music hilarious (brave sir Robin especially), the actors play great characters (shout outs to Tim the Enchanter, the bridge keeper & the dumb guards in the tower). I’ve been noticing new things every time I watch it and I’ve seen it numerous times over the last 30 years or so. Actual genius. 🙌

I clicked so fast on this notification! I saw this movie for the first time back in 2001 in middle school and have loved it ever since. I can obnoxiously quote the entire movie and laugh before the jokes even happen. I loved laughing along with y’all during this watch!

What a fun reaction! I actually expected the rating to be higher, simply for originality. Some of the jokes are so ridiculous but in the best way possible; even after almost 50 years, outside of other Monty Python movies it's just not the type of humour you find anywhere else. I watched this for the first time when I was about 15 with a group of friends, and I don't ever remember laughing so hard in my life, and we all talked about it for weeks afterward. How many movies can you really say that about, that leave that much of an impression? For that alone I would give it at least an 8.5 :). Cheers from Canada!

I bought this on VHS years ago and asked my mother, who had never seen it, to watch it with me. I was on the 🛋 and she sat in the chair. Mind you, I had worked the night before and eventually I fell 😴. Mom continued to watch the 🎥. Later she said something was wrong with the tape. I asked what she meant. She said she was watching the 🎥, then this organ music started playing and the movie never came back on. I laughingly told her it's Monty Python, and THAT was the ending. She got so angry 😆. She said, "You telling me I sat there and watched that 🎥 and it didn't even have an ending! " . 😂

Even I still quote this movie. Funny is funny. It reaches everyone. 😁

I've never heard you guys laugh so hard. Love the Stones shirt, Tom! You know who put up the money for this movie? Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Genesis! lol. And George Harrison paid for "Life Of Brian"! As far as if you showed this film to someone blind? Reactors have been doing just that! Some don't get it, most love it - and that's the way it ALWAYS was Python, even in the 70s (perhaps even moreso). As far as whether or not a 15 year old would get it now....that was never the target audience. The audience was fans of the TV show which came from all backgrounds, definitely college age and people in their 20s, but also older./You're right, there aren't that many comedies these days! My favorite comedy in the last twenty years is "24 Hour Party People" (another British film) which is actually a true story about the Manchester music scene of the 70s and 80s. Starring Steve Coogan. I'd DIE if you reacted to that!

The most subversive movie ever made. It broke every rule, and I love it. As kids we could quote the whole movie, so much so, I got a copy of the original script. Too good! As always: finish Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy: 2) Prince of Darkness and 3) In the Mouth of Madness.

I have always thought the most underrated and multi-layered joke in the entire film is the Intermission, which unfortunately is lost on most modern audiences as they no longer exist. 1. Most epic dramas of the time longer than 2 ½-hours had an intermission break. This is a 90 minute comedy. 2. As a rule, most intermissions occur fairly close to the halfway mark. That this one occurs so close to the end implies that after 80+ minutes, you’re only halfway through the film. 3. Intermissions are always placed at a natural pause in the story. This one happens right in the middle of a tense action scene (crossing the Bridge of Death). 4. The sight of the intermission card prompted audiences to stand up and make their way to the lobby (as theatergoers of the time were conditioned to do). This five second intermission gives you just enough time to awkwardly sit back down. LOL 5. It sets up the epic troll at the end of the film by using the same music, suggesting that there will be more story after the 5 minute organ serenade.

He has to keep lifting his face shield as the two bars run right in front of his eyes. So, no, he can't see with it down. The ending is a cop out. This is my favorite comedy. This and Airplane! are funny every time I watch them. It achieves its goal of near constant laughs, and looks fantastic despite the small budget. I give it a 9 as there is little to do to improve it.

One other point about the ending. I remember in the cinema we all thought like you this can't be the end and we sat there for two minutes looking at an empty screen. The boys had taken the piss out of us. It is so clever.

The problem with a lot of comedy schetches is they often don't have a good way to wrap up. Monty Python often dealt with that by not ending them - on the TV show they'd often use a constable stepping in and declaring the schetch over because it was "too silly". Our they'd have one of the members suddenly break in and say, "And now for something completely different. " This movie was ended in that same tradition.

So funny seeing English guys watch this for the 1st time, you guys get the humour straight away. South African here with a Dad that grew up in London, so we were brought up on Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, etc...love it lol

I saw this as a kid and even in my middle school art class we had a project where we were each given a square piece of paper with the section of an image we had to draw, and when all the squares from the whole class were put together on the wall, it was the lineup of the main characters from this film. Also my mom would say "Bring out yer dead!" to get my brother up in the mornings since he was NOT a morning kid. XD So it definitely is considered to be nostalgic to me. I laugh every time I watch this film, so in that regards it's aged so well!

this movie deserves at least an 8/10 this is one of the best comedies ever with Life of Brian they stood the test of time and they are always a great time, very hard to do something like this :)

You should do a series of great British Comedies, see if some of the old classics stand up in your eyes. First on the list should get the original version of the black comedy, The Lady Killers, with Alec Guiness and a young Peter Sellers.

A fun re-watch/review of an incredibly funny movie. My comedy suggestions are old school, Arsenic and Old Lace, Harvey and Some Like It Hot.

I’m a 17-year-old girl, and I absolutely love this movie. I find almost nothing in this movie genuinely offensive (the segment with the teenage girls is a little yucky, but it’s supposed to be). You don’t have to be abhorrent to be cheeky or rebellious. I think quite a lot of 70s movies don’t get the praise they deserve for being timelessly progressive or innocent. I always roll my eyes when people say “you couldn’t make this today!” when talking about comedy. Of course you couldn’t. It’s been FOURTY YEARS since the 70s. The scene of comedy and culture has changed a lot in 40 years, simply because that’s how time works. Besides, “offensive” or “bold” media is still alive and kicking. To say people are too sensitive today is foolish and disrespectful towards real grievances. Edit: Comedy is an art form, and like all other art forms, should be critiqued and held to a high standard. Minorities deserve to be positively and accurately represented in comedy, and them saying “hey, that’s really awful and detrimental to our community” when a joke is bad is 100% valid. Being genuinely misogynistic, racist, homophobic, etc. isn’t funny. Just wanted to elaborate in case anyone misunderstood me. 😅

The no horses and the same castle over and over are definitely due to budget, but make it hilarious

I think the two best words to describe this film and Python in general are: Subversive and Absurd. Together, they are comedy gold. And yes, it's still funny!

I think Napoleon Dynamite is a great example of more current “random comedy” as I like to call it, but really there’s nothing quite like the Python movies

I'd love to see you guys tackle some other iconic comedies, Mel Brooks, the Marx Brothers, the Naked Gun, Edgar Wright. Terry Gilliam, the animator of Python and the main director of their films, is a criminally underrated director and screenwriter on his own - if you haven't seeb Brasil, I think it's genuinely brilliant.

When I was a kid I didn't really get why the historian/investigation into his death was funny, and now it's the thing that makes me laugh the hardest since the cuts to it are so out of nowhere

In a sense this was their first film (actual story). However their first cinema film was "And Now For Something Completely Different" which was a re-filming of sketches from the series "Monty Pythons Flying Circus"

I have to say that it's taken me a long time to get Monty Python, but I love it. I am a fan and I applaud you English men, always a fan.

Thanks guys growing up near Dallas the pbs station there was the first to get Monty Python in the US I believe so of course me and my friends were all over it loved every episode etc so between that and the first season of Saturday Night in 75 it was a fun time for us acting stupid at school and church haha brilliant!

It is a low budget film. In fact the coconut joke came about because they couldn't afford horses. Also all of the castle scenes were either models or one castle in Scotland (the only castle in Scotland where they were allowed to film). What I love about this movie is that it defies so many story telling and movie making conventions, from the opening credits to the fourth wall breaking to resolving story telling issues in an absurd way (the animator dying and the arrests at the end). For me this is the genius of film - although it's also funny as hell.
