I was 12 when my family and I had read this book before the movie came out. When we saw the trailer we all felt like they had pulled her right out of our heads. Stephen King liked her performance so much that he wrote Delores Claiborn for her to play the role.

Not true. Ruth Gordon won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Rosemary’s Baby. The book MISSRY is more savage as she amputated part of his finger and leg.

I’ve heard they had trouble casting it because macho actors didn’t want to be bedridden the whole film. Like that it would be bad for their career, not so much personally. Then you’ve got Sonny Corleone taking on the part and NAILING it.

Both Kathy Bates and James Caan really excelled in their roles. I've heard mixed rumors about James as far as their personal life/behavior on set... especially about his relationship with Bette Midler in 'For the Boys', but in general I want to avoid the personal lives of actors, to concentrate on their roles, in this he is amazing. I also have loved Frances Sternhagen in every role I've seen her in, including this one. This depended on some real character actors to fill out the supporting roles, and I think it is stronger for it. Hollywood REALLY needs to stop concentrating on 'NAME' actors and focus on character actors with a proven track record, because they really make the film, even though they aren't on the marquee. I love actors who can put aside their egos to play the supporting roles who may end up dead (or looking like a*holes.... though that's not a thing in this move). Employ actors over stars, is what I mean, and this has some GREAT supporting roles. Those who buy their own press tend to degrade the film they've agreed to be in, and they're stronger to me when I can see they've put aside their press agents to just play a role.

@@robnowaczewski5351Yeah, I’ve similarly heard bad things about James Caan. I definitely don’t write off artists’ works, especially when they’re part of an ensemble, but my cynicism leaves me unsurprised when I hear a celeb has been behaving badly.

In a film full of great moments, that one line is my favourite. The way Kathy Bates delivers it is sublime as it is detached. She been consistently great in everything I’ve seen her in, but the next time she really wowed me was in *AHS: Roanoke.* I think I can safely say that’s in my Top 3 favourite seasons of it. In a show that could often be hit or miss, that one absolutely nailed it. I’ll not risk spoiling anything by mentioning any more, but needless to say, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys her performance here…

When she does the spin & squeals about Misery being alive & how she's gonna go put on her Liberace records. I die every single time. Kathy Bates is amazeballs in everything, but this is one of my favorite roles of hers. You can't take your eyes off her anytime she is on screen. Perfect, perfect casting. 😍 James Caan is also pretty damn fantastic.

I remember basically gnashing my teeth while reading this and I despised Kathy Bates' character. Absolutely brilliant acting performance by Ms. Bates. Exquisitely painful.

The novel was fun but a big drawback for me was all the passages we had to read of Paul typing the new Misery book, with the typewriter font and the missing letter n. Ugh, what a chore. I nearly ended up skipping those parts of the story-- I wanted to get back to the cat and mouse game between the two main characters.

It added to the theme, don't you think? Stephen King is my favorite author.@@eduardo_corrochio

I'm 55 years old, and I still cannot watch that scene. I've seen it once in my life when I first saw the film, and every time I've seen the film since, I've had to cover my own eyes.

It's not just the scene itself It's the story she tells about It's origin.

It's how unnaturally far the ankles bend.

In the book she uses and axe and cuts off his feet.

This is one of the adaptations I like better than the book. Paul is more likeable here and the way the film streamlines the plot is great. Tho I did like that Annie kind of contributed to the actual book writing more in the novel. Like she came up with the bee sting allergy thing when Paul was struggling to figure out how Misery was buried alive.

It was good but nothing beats the Green Mile or Shankshaw redemption

I especially like how Paul fails to kill Annie with every tool of his world (the typewriter, the pages, his bare hands), but it takes one from hers -- the little pig statue -- to end her. I could be reading too much into it, but that's what I took away.

@MikeySea676 jimmy caan, RIP, was a hell of an actor. This is his best performance IMO. During that last scene with her, he's switching back and forth in emotions like crazy and he has to act from a wheelchair and convey a sense of helplessness while also being strong enough to "stand" (no pun intended) up to her in their final confrontation.

Such a great movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh is also brilliant in it.

You know you've done a great job when a writer creates a book just so you can star in it. And it was a great movie. My mom loved it so much, and I enjoyed watching it with her.

Nah. Annie is a serial killer. It's heavily implied that she killed her husband and a roommate back in nursing school.

By this measure, then John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy were just sad, sick men who desperately needed mental help. Like them, she was pretty much beyond it, given that she serially-killed infants and still kept the original news clippings about her trophies in a scrapbook.

The book is so much different than the movie! They excluded so much scenes and brutality and gore in the book is on another level but I think that movie is better and acting is superb!

Yeah like how Annie survived long enough in the book to get to her barn and fetch her chainsaw, being found dead clutching it near the house implying she had had enough and was gonna just chop Paul up. Although cutting off his finger and putting it on top of a birthday cake she made him and then setting it on fire to be used as a birthday candle, while asking him to blow it out has to be my favourite gruesome detail they missed out.

I started the book and never finished it, but I'll never forget the opening chapter, when he's describing what his pain felt like after the crash. It's been decades since I read it, and I still have the visual of the broken off piling and the tide in my head. Stephen King is a master at making things stick with you, so now I'm glad I didn't finish the book, lol.

Yes, Dolores Claiborne is a must watch. Moody and the simmering tension throughout, while it keeps you guessing

Dolores Claiborne is Kathy Bates’ favorite career character performance. She should have won the Oscar for that performance as well.

if he was anything like i was, left often with 2 older siblings (by 5 and 6 years) to babysit that left you to yourself, his mother probably never knew he saw it. by the time i realized my zombie nightmare that tortured me for years was really ptsd from seeing night of the living dead at way too young an age, i confronted my sister about what the heck was happening during babysitting. she said “i don’t know. we never watched you. we’d just turn on the tv and whatever was showing, you watched.” i was raised by wolves. 😒

@@samanthanickson6478 My aunt used to babysit me. My parents would send me with snacks and a movie to watch in their rec room. He'd end up changing it to something like this. We'd have to sit super close to the tv so he could turn it off quickly if my aunt came down. I also saw Carrie , and The Thing at their house. Dawn Of The Dead gave me horrific nightmares, but I never ratted my cousin out.

Storm of the Century wasn’t a novel first. King wrote the screenplay and it was always meant to just be a miniseries. (But they did release the screenplay as a book after the miniseries aired.) Totally agree, it’s one of my favorites too. I watch it every winter-preferably when there’s a snowstorm ❄️ And love Kathy in FGT 🥰 Having her and Jessica Tandy together makes my heart happy.

A lot of top male actors passed up the role for that very reason. So shout out to James Caan. It was a really hard character to play and Kathy Bates was amazing.

Why was it unfortunate that Kathy Bates outshined James Caan? Maybe everyone didn't give him the credit he deserved for being a great actor in that movie. That's all I was saying.

Yeah that definitely fits the book's feel and setting. Paul was reinvigorated with the Misery world because of Annie putting that fear into him about writing for his life, basically. In his thoughts during the writing, he's constantly amazed that he's enjoying writing for the characters and developing a deeper plot. There's a lot of mystery and intrigue due to stuff going on between the characters. Something that was only sparked because Annie gave him the idea for the bee sting allergy bit. That set him down a path in plotting that he'd never done in the Misery series prior. The fact that he was happy with his writing, I don't mind he published it in the novel. Doesn't really work as an ending for the film, given how differently Annie and Paul's relationship is surrounding the writing.

The play was written by the same guy who wrote the movie's screenplay, William Goldman.
