Snowpiercer was one of 2014's best surprises. It's original, weird as hell, and driving. We loved it. We also found its sins... you know how we do.
Next week: Two 2015 films we hated--and they share an actor!
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

+AmyD You're assuming he was in any fashion proud of eating people, even when he was doing it. He more than likely had a moral problem, and physical problem, eating people in the beginning but found a way to reason beyond it. But I'd imagine it's also because he knows other people eat it, and since he thinks of himself as their protector and helper as he is trying to forge ahead to a better tomorrow, it was a moral repulsion that everyone was being forced to eat the bugs. TL;DR: When was the last time you heard a cannibal say: "We're having bugs for lunch? Yay! I'd totally not rather eat my mother-in-law!"

When Curtis opens the hatch in the food processing machine, I actually think that CGI is poorly done because they replaced what was originally there, in post-production. In the story where this is based from the train is much bigger (1000+ cars) and there's a reason why both food and water plants are between the two population groups. They literally drank and ate shit from the upper class, and I think that made it on to the movie. It explains why they always mention it just by "shit" even after knowing it was processed bugs, and why he looks so disgusted. He ate babies, I'm assuming that eating a few crickets isn't all that bad, since it's actual food in some parts of the world. Everything else in the movie, CGI wise, is amazingly good looking, except for those bugs. I think it was a poor post-production fix because they thought implying they literally ate shit was a bit too much for their audience.

I thought at least 2 things were worthy of sin removals. Him letting Edgar die I was expecting the cliché try and save the best friend thing, he hardly spends time to think about it he doesn't do it easily, but he knows how important the mission is compared to 1 life even his best friend. Then him killing the woman whose defenseless and begging. Not really something you see from your protagonist that often, he isn't the "hero" who can save everyone and get out of every situation, but someone who can do despicable things and make hard choices.

I think letting Edgar die was a great scriptwriting move. It showed how focused and determined he was, whilst he loved his friend he didnt place his life above all the others fighting and dying. Traits of a real leader, not allowing his personal feelings to get in the way of objectives and minimising loses to his side rather than himself.

The scene where Curtis and the others are fighting the car with all the masked weaponized guys, and them cutting into the fish, dipping their axes into blood, is actually an old practice. Dipping a sharp weapon into animal blood, feces, or any kind of contamination before battle is to infect the enemies blood so if they don't die from a blow, they will die from illness. It was a practiced in ancient times before going to war, before guns were created. I do like your videos, and want to see more. We really need the comedy during this time. @maddysmith7166
@maddysmith7166 5 жыл бұрын
God this is an old comment, but I just felt like adding my interpretation of the answer. Curtis makes a pretty blunt point about midway through the movie that he felt regret for still having both arms. This is inferred to be both because he hadn't sacrificed it by standing up in an act of revolt and being forced to lose it, or by voluntarily sacrificing his arm to feed the masses. He held Gilliam in high regard for his sacrifice. So, when he saw Timmy trapped down there, after promising Tanya he'd save him, that was his moment of sacrifice. This was him giving his arm in the same way Gilliam did, and so many others did. It's not so much symbolism as it is the conclusion of his arc. He went from unable to make that sacrifice, and not believing himself to be a leader, to being forced to be a leader, to finally taking on that role and making the needed sacrifice.

+Dawn Wolcott Indeed, but it's a really **bad** allegory for class struggle. Class struggle, loosely, refers to the bourgeoisie feeding off the working proletariat. The main thing missing in the movie is the working proletariat. The tail passengers actually have a sweet deal - they've been spared the freezing apocalypse outside and all they do is lay on their backsides all day while being fed protein bars (which seem pretty nutritious - Chris Evans looks healthier than I'll ever be). Not for free, mind you - every now-and-then one of their children is taken . But this is a far cry from a predatory capitalist system. It's more of a utopia that sustains itself with regular sacrifices - like the morlocks and the eloi.
@LoadedGunn47
@LoadedGunn47 8 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Baculea See, that's how I saw it honestly. I mean, as bad as it is being in that situation at the end of the day, they're spared a freezing death. There's always going to be a divide between the haves and the have nots, but let's face it, if they had actually taken over the front section and the roles were reversed, would *they* have been willing to give everyone an even share? Doubtful. Every group wants equality until they start thinking how much better superiority is.

+Wraith Wrecker Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it... I simply see through the pandering pseudo-intelligent themes and messages to find that not only does it fail to serve its purpose, it focused to much on its point to properly explain itself. MANY of the comments stating that it was "fantastic", "outstanding", etc. only said that and gave no reason leaving one with the impression they were either joining the bandwagon of love or that they didn't see past its façade into its flaws. And those that argued with those that called it out went with the "you simply failed to capture its deep/insightful/meaning... you are (too young/dumb/etc) to understand" argument.The fairest comments about this movie were middle of the road, they pointed out the enjoyed its visual differences but that the plot was lacking.
@wraithwrecker_

jtq1995 The filmmaking(camerawork, lighting, editing) was superb, the acting was wonderful, the action was very well done, the social commentary was powerful(something very rarely seen in Hollywood), the characters were convincing and had motives(more than can be said of most movies). I could go on, but you get the point. People saying this movie is a piece of shit are just wrong. And keep in mind that it's Bong Jun-Ho's english debut. For a debut into Hollywood, I'd say it's a raging success(its marketing was awful though. Barely anyone saw it in theaters). If you don't mind, WHAT exactly do YOU qualify as "pandering"? Most Marvel movies are full of what I'D call pandering, but I don't see ANY of that in Snowpiercer. And what about the plot was lacking? I felt the plot was very compelling and something we've not really seen much of in other movies. Sure, the movie has some flaws, but there's too much excellent filmmaking, performance, etc for me to hate it. And besides, the concept is not cliche and compared to other movies, this one is nearly devoid of cliches in general. The thing I like most about the movie is that it's ambitious. The school scene, the nightvision goggle scene, the new years' egg scene, the scene when they're shooting at each other from different train cars, etc. The ideas behind those scenes would be shot down in a splitsecond by Hollywood producers and I applaud the filmmakers for gambling on them, because they worked. So when you say, "The plot is lacking", what do you mean? What exactly was "lacking"? I don't see it, to be honest.
