Yes, I agree, that should've definitely been at least one sin off. Dan really started to show to really be loyal to Forrest, here and when he showed at up at Forrest's boat like he earlier promised. Also, even though cinemasins said that Forrest's diagnosis was never officially explained in the movie, I think alot of it is because Forrest was autistic and autism wasn't really known yet during the time periods this movie took place. But he was autistic and not retarded because he wasn't slow in every area like someone with down syndrome, he was slow in some areas and didn't understand certain things that many adults do, but he exceeded remarkably in other areas such as in the army, running, and ping pong

This movie represents how much difficulty Forrest went through in his life while still looking at everything through rose colored glasses, he was successful and had a good life but the people around him that he loved did not have the same fate, especially jenny who Forrest looked up to and loved even when she wasn't worth it because he couldn't see her red flags, she was a friend, but she also left Forrest multiple times because she couldn't commit, and when she finally did she died.

OFC Jenny's early death also conveniences the writers in not having to deal with the likely realities of a marriage with so much previous baggage, with all those happenings between Forest and Jenny that make us cringe throughout the film. Just skip all that and reset to the son for a happy ending.

BoJack Horseman has a good quote in it on this subject, Wanda to BoJack: "You know, it's funny; when you look at someone through rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags." I always loved that, and I think it definitely applies here.

JFC, the point of Forrest gump is that someone slow, who would normally be treated with contempt, turned out to be a more noble character than people who were ‘fully functional’. The fact that he is named after a klu klux klan member, then goes on to give half of his fortune to the family of the black man who gave him a business idea allegorizes that one’s destiny isn’t predetermined, and that it can actually be virtuous to be simple minded.

We were all fooled by this movie when it first came out. In actuality, the military will never recruit a below average person because he would put his life as well as the lives of his fellow soldiers in danger, and so there goes all his heroics, meeting his best friend, that LT and ultimately becoming a millionaire. And then there are some of those intelligent lines that he comes up with like the meaning of life is both accident and destiny which again can not come from a below average person, and if it does, then he is a normal person, and thus no Forest Gump with a limited IQ but a kind hearted person.

Not sure about the correlation of being simple and virtuous, but my late sister's son and his wife have a child with down syndrome. She is now three years old, and is the happiest, smilingest little girl you would ever want to meet. Her six year old brother is super protective of her. She has gone through many hospitalizations for all that she needs fixed, and through it all is sunny and beautiful. She gets and gives so much love. And no one treats her as "Slow". They just treat her as Piper.

This movie is fascinating bc there's such a divide in reception. You either love it or hate it for the same reasons but have the opposite reactions. Like I basically disagree with every sin having the opposing opinion of the scene or story. I think one of the biggest causes is that Jenny is one of the most misunderstood characters in popular film history. Seems like a lot of people just don't have enough knowledge or experience with sexual abuse victims to understand how accurate and tragic her character is.

@@starprince5098 leave Jenny alone Forest loves her.and no sexual molestation in childhood does not turn someone into such a horrible person because a lot of people go through it and do not become such a horrible person. And she is self-aware enough to notice this is why she tried to stay away from him through the entire film. But in the end she gave him what he wanted because she knows that she would regret it if she didn't. And much like the entire film she's kind of selfish but overall tries to do the right thing by Forest. But she's a weak person... Dude that's reality for a lot of people. And I avoid people like this like like the plague. But it doesn't mean that they don't exist. When I mean people like this I mean there's always a situation where you're going to love them more than they love you. And they're always not emotionally mature enough to make a lasting Bond because they've dealt with physical or emotional incest and they just don't trust people that way anymore.Because the sex is a substitutes for the parent( or whomever) and the parent is the one they one they emotionly bonded to. It's a very toxic..(Much like say a codependent relationship) And that's all I'm going to say.

4:04 The Dr. Pepper thing is definitely physically possible. Dr. Pepper didn't come in 20 oz bottles in the 60s. The bottles it shows him drinking would be 12 oz bottles, like most beer bottles. That would be 180 oz, not 300. I have seen people drink way more than that of beer, and I have personally drank nearly that much in less than hour when I was 22. The bladder may only hold some, but the stomach would also hold quite a bit while waiting on the bladder.

There was a period in the mid 90s where movies and TV were doing a lot of the "editing modern actors into old footage" thing because digital video technology and remastering had just reached the point where it could look believable. A good example is the episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where the crew time travels back to an episode of the original Star Trek series and interacts with characters like Kirk and Spock. Honestly I think a good chunk of the early inspiration for Forrest Gump was the idea of telling someone's life story and showing them in historical footage as an unlikely background character.

@lesley leslie lmao, feminine solidarity even for fictional characters. You'll always find excuses for the most degenerate behaviours. If the writers wanted to write a character who was "in love" with the protag, they wouldn't have it run away every occasions to ride the dick carousel and come back only to suck him out of his money because it got AIDS and needs the financial support riding dicks no longer provides because of that. But you're right about the character thinking it's not good enough, because it really isn't, and they really drive this point through with how they made her act. She's so evil it's almost comical. So many people take a very harsh view on the Jenny relationship. She is a showcase of someone in the time, horrifically abuses as a child, no therapy or justice for it at any point. Drifting trough life because she has no tools to deal with what she has went trough, gravitating to abusive people and unable to accept being loved, and eventually falling victim of to the AIDS epidemic with next to no medical care, she is a vital and well rounded part of the Forrest Gump story.

Luckily for Forrest, she apparently contacted AIDS after the night she slept with Forrest at his house. You'd think though that she would've contacted it during all her drug shooting days in San Francisco, which was before the scene where she met with Forrest back at his house, but it looked like Forrest never got HIV or AIDS himself. Unless, since you can carry the virus for years before it makes you sick, what if Forrest did contact HIV and just didn't get AIDS until after the last scene in the movie? That would've given the movie a much darker tone. But luckily, I don't think that the filmmakers implied that that was ever to happen

I also love Lieutenant Dan’s character. He is a traumatized and disabled war veteran and he is able to make it out in the end.

Lauren Nicole Why does she gets so much flak in this movie? It's like they tuned out completely at the normal human experience just because they think Forrest is adorable. Jenny didn't think she was in love with Forrest because she thought she was taking advantage of him the same way her father molested her. For fucks sake, Forrest is retarded. Jenny, out of everyone who's ever met him, knows this best of all. She knows that her closest friend and only loved one is a fucking idiot. Imagine that. Imagine for one second that the only person who was always kind to you was someone who didn't know any better. Everyone in the world who knew about your father looked at you either as a victim or as something disgusting, but that one man doesn't. And it's because he's retarded. Jenny doesn't think that way at the start. As a kid, she just thinks he's different and is just glad to have a friend. But as she gets older, especially as a teenager, she realizes that her closest friend will never mature like she does. He loves her like he would anything and everything else, so long as its nice or cuddly, like a pet or a sibling, at least in her mind. Her father treated her like shit, and there was no way in hell others didn't do the same when they found out she was molested. She would have wanted to feel loved. That's where she gets the abusive relationship crap. She wants so much to be loved that she doesn't understand that they are taking advantage of her. She thinks that as long as they aren't forcing her to have sex, that's normal. Getting beat on, pressured to drug addiction, and dragged around into whatever dangerously extreme political bands they're into is just fine, as long as they don't rape her. That's why she's so shocked when Forrest defends her from harm. Why would anyone do that if what they're doing to her is normal? She keeps leaving Forrest behind because she convinces herself that he doesn't really love her. She convinces herself that his affections are shallow, since he would never be able to really understand love either. I mean really, how many of you honestly think someone who is that mentally challenged could understand the complexities and nuances of love? There's no way they could. What they have is something simple, and Jenny doesn't think that could be real. And even IF she believed he could, even IF she got out of that abusive cycle, *she knows better*. FFS, if that scene with Forrest and her in her college dormroom had the genders reversed, people would be so fucking uncomfortable about that scene because it'd be inching so close to rape. Jenny knows that. She realizes that. That is why she shuts off her feelings for Forrest, above any other reasons to stay away: she thinks she is molesting him. She saw how uncomfortable he was when she did that and thought *holy fuck, what the hell am I doing?* Can you imagine how twisted you must feel after realizing in that moment that you turned into the father who molested you? How the fuck can you love yourself after doing that to your best friend, when you know what that's like? Would you ever let yourself get close to them again if you really cared about them? So Jenny kept running away. Every time Forrest gets close and saves her, she runs off before she falters. She won't let herself get near him, and as the movie goes on, she fails a little more each time. First she blows him off after the strip club, telling him to stay away. Then she walks with him in DC, but still leaves with her boyfriend. Then she stays with him in his house and finally sleeps with him, after that one critical moment. When he tells her he does know what love is, and asks her why she doesn't love him. She finally gives in and does sleep with him, but can you imagine thinking afterwards? Would you, in her shoes, with absolute and unwavering certainty, think you did the right thing? Or would you be afraid that you did exactly what you had been avoiding because you *do* actually care that much about him? So she runs away. She hides her child from him, because she thinks he shouldn't have to worry or pay for something he can't handle. She thinks she's wronged him, and the least she could do is set things right by raising a good child, without dragging him down. And then she gets sick. Doctors don't know what it is, but she's going to die. Her kid is only a few years old. Can you imagine struggling with that decision to tell your *victim* that they have a kid and now they have to take care of it because you're going to die? That's what she struggles with before coming to terms with the fact that she's happy with him, and he's happy with her, and *that's what love actually is*. It's something *simple* and unconditional, and even Forrest can understand it. It takes her her whole goddamn life to figure out that love is just that simple, and she dies months afterwards. She realized she had been running away from what made her happy, and it *isn't wrong*, and she only gets so much time together before it's over. And instead of realizing that narrative even exists in the story, people just bitch about how Jenny is such a slut, but she won't even love the only person who cares about her. Jenny always loved Forrest, during the whole fucking movie. She loved him so much, she thought she was taking advantage of him and ran away for his sake. She didn't realize she was wrong until it was almost too late. TL;DR: Jenny thought she was molesting Forrest because he couldn't understand what love is, so she either suppressed her feelings or ran away.

On the Wedding scene, Lt. Dan could not sit. According to multiple people I asked, including my Orthopedist, prosthetic legs of the early 80s did not bend at the knee like modern prosthetics. Therefore, he would have to remove his legs to sit down. Now, think of the logistics; Lt Dan would have to take off his legs for the ceremony, put them back on to walk to the reception. Then, take them off again to sit at the table.

Jenny was the classic victim of child abuse: she believed that she could only be loved by men who abused her and felt she didn't deserve to be with someone who cared about her like Forrest. She ran from him every time he showed her he cared because of guilt (her own). It wasn't until she had his son that she realized that her running away was not possible anymore as she had to think of someone else other than herself. Yes, her running away was selfish, but it was a defense mechanism that she finally conquered when she became a mother and found out she was dying. She also wanted her son to know his father and for his father to know that his son was smart. In the end, his son looked up to him because IQ has nothing to do with being a good person. Forrest realizes who he is in the end because by telling his story, he is coming to terms with himself as being a complete human being not defined by his intellect, but through living an extraordinary life.

I honestly feel really bad for Forrest Gump for the way he was always accused of being "stupid or something" by so many other people except his mother. I mean he really truly loved Jenny and even referred to her as his only friend early on in the movie but as time progressed on, she did nothing but use him over and over again and the only advice she could give him for when he was in trouble was for him to run away. He was far sweeter than her than she deserved. I do not know of any other man that would put up with half of her bullshit, ESPECIALLY when she constantly would leave him only to be with yet another abusive boyfriend, one absuive boyfriend right after another. She sure did know how to pick some "real winners" (being sarcastic) but when Forrest would show up and actually try to defend her and protect her, all she would do is pretend to care and love him only to leave him behind again and I don't know how in the world she tricked him into believing he was the father of her little boy in the end when she had been with almost every other man (except for Forrest Gump), she shouldn't have lied to him about him being the father of that little boy. Instead she should have did a DNA test to make absolutely sure of something like that first. I mean, I can see why she was so messed up seeing how her father molested her at a young age and was always drunk and abusive but there is absolutely NO mention of her mother or even what happened to her mother other than the fact that she went up to heaven or something. So I guess she didn't have a very good example seeing what her father did to her, but the way she treated Forrest Gump throughout the whole movie until the end was just about as messed up as can be. As much as he loved her, you would think that she would have the decency to love him back instead of leaving him behind all the time the way she did?! That makes me so sad. He definitely deserves better and I guess he didn't think that anyone else would ever love him but in real life, nobidy else would have put up with all that BULLSHIT for so long. So I guess he must have REALLY loved her and she is DARN lucky that he stayed true to her all that time because NOBODY ELSE EVER showed her true love the way Forrest did. Agree with me or disagree with me, but I just think that he deserves better from her.

That lowlife excuse for a dad Jenny had is a good part of the reason she was messed up, and had to run away and totally get into the drugs scene. I know that some of it was also because it was the late 60s/early 70s and many people were doing it, but Jenny had that extra reason about her shaky background home life as well. And she got into pretty hard. I mean she had tears streaming down her face in that one scene and very seriously for a minute considered jumping off a high balcony

Very well said. As much as the movie makes a big deal out of Forrest supposedly being stupid, I never really saw the character as being all that stupid. He's slow but he's not really stupid. Like you said, Jenny spends the movie making stupid and bad decisions while Forrest ends up making good and intelligent decisions. The Vietnam war scenes were some of the scenes from the movie that showed how intelligent he is, as I heard some other people mention. He understands that he's in a life or death situation and how serious the situation is and you see him firing his rifle, engaging the enemy, showing courage under fire and bravely saving the other men( including Lieutenant Dan) in his platoon at the risk of his own life. If he was really as stupid as people claimed him to be, he wouldn't have survived the war in the first place( or even VOLUNTEERED to serve in the military in a time of war and to go to Vietnam when so many other people were going out of their way NOT to be sent and when so many other people were doing everything in their power to doge being drafted). There are a lot more dumber characters than Forrest in the movie( Jenny being one of them for the better part of the film) and there are certainly a lot of people with so-called normal I.Q. levels( and even high I.Q. levels) who are a hell of a lot dumber than Forrest.
