War of the Worlds holds up incredibly well for 1953. It was a Halloween tradition to watch it as a kid and it seemed like one of my local channels used to show it every October 31st, at least through the '80s. I honestly don't think I ever saw it come on TV again from the '90s and onward and that is a shame. That movie used to scare the crap out of me and I still make a point to watch my DVD just about every October.

Funny how all the "alien sightings" back then were of saucers and in step with their depiction in popular culture at the time. Nowadays no one in their wrong mind would say they saw a "saucer". Nice of the aliens to keep their crafts up to date on our perceptions of them...

Actually not true. They were said to look like saucers skipping in the sky not that they were shaped like saucers. That is something that the movies ran away with

I don't know, I think the whole remake thing was worse then than it is now. The worst we get are the Disney remakes. So I guess you could say we just traded horror remakes for that.

My favorite thing about the remake of "Invaders from Mars" is that, when Tobe Hooper reached out to the Air Force for involvement they refused saying something like "The Air Force doesn't comment on the existence of extraterrestrial life." However, when Hooper asked the Marines they said "Sure, we'll blow up some aliens!"

Another Cinemassacre classic. 15 years since this 3 parter, I actually did see the remake of "Invaders from Mars" on an episode of Svengoolie. While the effects were pretty cool, it did have a typical story. It does make me want to see the original to see if its better or not.

The original is honestly not super great. It is good for a cheesy movie to watch casually, but it's not a genuine masterpiece of the '50s like War of the Worlds or The Day The Earth Stood Still is.

Well to James it's just about special effects lol. Ironic, I don't remember if it was the case in 2009 but today John Carpenter's The Thing is among the most beloved and most analyzed horror movies and it wouldn't do it without great characters and tension. The original is one of those classics that I just can't get into.

I think James undersells the original invaders from mars a bit, I really enjoyed that one. Very dream like and disturbing! I like that cinemassacre clips periodically re-uploads old content, it’s reminiscent of when you’d catch re-runs of Joe Bob or svengoolie on cable tv. When I was a little kid in the 70s I watched "The Thing" with my Dad one October on TV. The constant opening of doors lulled me into the perfect piss yourself setup when(as shown in this video)the alien monster is finally on the other side of the door. I almost wound up on the ceiling! Love when he posts the old stuff, which I have not seen all of. And this topic is right up my alley. I don’t share (and it seems like James barely does) the view that sci-fi are ripe for remakes because the spfx can be improved. I’ve heard fellow Godzilla fans say “I always wanted him done in a big-budget Holllywood movie” and I just say “why?”

When I worked at Blockbuster, our walls would be full of these cheap remakes so that people would mistakingly rent them. I figure that's why these studios released them straight to DVD while the big budget version was still in theaters.

In 2009, it was a remake, but then someone went "no lets make it a prequel to Carpenters' movie instead." Speaking of which, I don't hate that movie. it's just nowhere near as good as Carpenters. Really, it's only there to go "oh so that's what happened at the Norwegian camp."

I completely disagree with James's take on the Thing vs The Thing from another World. In my opinion it's not even close to a contest. John Carpenter wins. Like sure the Thing from Another World is okay...I guess. But the monster is lame, especially compared to the John Carpenter version and the characters are just morons. The scientist is an idiot for sure, but the side characters have the opposite problem. All they want to do is kill the alien and the movie treats it like it's a good thing. Also, yeah, overlapping dialogue is kind of impressive but c'mon, it doesn't make the movie or characters especially good. The "less is more" mentality sounds like cope if you ask me. Everything the Hawks version does, Carpenter not only surpasses but obliterates.

I always remember how in a later Cinemassacre video James said something to the effect of "The characters in Carpenter's Thing are less memorable than the ones in the original" and that's a take I can't understand at all, since all the characters in the original Thing are just 50's sci-fi/monster movie archetypes, while the ones in the Carpenter's version have actual personalities.
