If I had to put the cinematography of Greig Fraser into words, I’d describe it as invisible, flexible and restrained, yet always functional to the telling of the story. In this episode, I'll break down Fraser's diverse filmography by looking at his cinematic philosophy and analyse how he achieves it through his choice of technical film gear.

@@InDepthCine I think Dune will be visually a bit different than the standardized look that Deakins set it up for Villeneuve movies. This was the first thought that came into my mind after watching this video. Because Deakins and Fraser follow two entirely different approach on lighting as you have pointed out in this video and that of Deakins video. I feel like in Dune, we would miss that layers of lights and Shadows that Deakins set up for his movies.
@Aventsdor

@@jaegerschtulmann What I'm really worried about dune is how accessible it looks. After the flop which was 2049 studios are going to force Villeneuve to make his film more accessible and probably will have alot of studio interference. Maybe this non thought out color palette and more block buster gray tone is reflective of that

Saw this video after The Batman, and I'm convenience that he is the most talented cinematographer of all time. Ussualy, you get one, maybe two "movie moments" in a movie, but Batman had...um...hold on, let me write it down... 1: Batman's first appearance, 2. Batman arrives at the Iceberg lounge, 3. The Batmobile fires up, 4. The upside-down frame at the end of the chase 5. Batman jumps off and flies away, 6. The hallway scene (My personal favorite shot of the movie) 7. Batman guides the civilians out of the water, Bonus 8: The camera pans down from Joker's eyes to his face. Yep, 8. And they're all from the cinematography. The acting is good, but the perfect mixture of light, color, control, and rain (This one makes a lot bigger difference than you would think at first glance) sets the perfect mood for the movie and allows those moments we love to happen.

Greig Fraser actually started his career at a production company called Exit Films, which was founded by Garth Davis. After he moved on from Exit, Adam Arkapaw soon joined in his stead, and you can see that the two have a very similar visual style. Greig is always pushing the boundaries of filmmaking - according to one AC who worked with him on Lion, Grieg was one of the first to use LED screen technology, like that in Mando; one of the first to use Wi-Fi lights; and set the standard for a new way of lighting and colouring - his slightly desaturated, high-contrast look has become quite popular, and you can see the visual similarities between The Batman and Arkapaw's The King. He totally deserves the Oscar and it's super encouraging to hear that an Australian from country Victoria can climb the ladder, too. In terms of look, Greig also regularly shoots with Panavision - he's a big fan of their anamorphic lenses. Dune, for example, was shot with Ultra Panatars.

Thank you for the analysis! It’s been a while since I had a chance to watch one but as always, it’s brilliant! I was surprised at how many of his films I’ve seen before. I think you summed up perfectly by including his goal for his work. There’s something inviting about his cinematography, as if you feel that no matter what happens on screen, you’re seeing the most cinematic version of it. I got that sense from watching Rogue One in the cinema, as I immediately thought that this is the best that Star Wars has looked since A New Hope. Understated and dark, yet somehow hopeful with its soft lighting. I’m looking forward to seeing his filmography! Thank you!

I'm not crazy about the way Foxcatcher looks, but perhaps it's the bland eeriness of the film itself I am being confused by. Rogue One however, is my favorite from all the recent Star Wars spin offs because it so closely resembles the look and feel of the originals. Love Killing Them Softly too. Hugely underrated that movie, though I presume Greig didn't approach Andrew Dominik at the end of the shoot and said, '...now f**kin pay me!'
