"everywhere you turn, there's a new 16" drawing display...." And that's great. Gone are the days that the only display you could buy was a Wacom and you'd have to sell your soul to get one. The only other alternative used to be buying a used ex-business tabletpc which had a wacom digitiser but that was jinky as heck around the edges.

I started using my XP Pen artist pro16 (one with the red ring) since the beginning of my university design study, and 5 years later I'm still using it today for my full time job and occasional fun doddling. One of my proudest investment lol. Now compare to what's on the market like the 2nd gen 16 or Ipad pro, I think is time for an upgrade :)

from my past experience I believe Wacom's edge comes from it's device driver using the CPU's cache to prioritize the stylus input. in the old days even "upgrading" to a slower CPU with a greater amount of cache than a faster CPU with lesser cache made wacom's pen more responsive. today all modern CPU's are more than fine!

I can't recommend XP-Pen anymore. I had some issues with their older Artist 16 Pro tablets. I contacted them about the issues and received a " sorry about your luck". I think I'll save up a bit more and buy what I know is a quality product.

I'm upgrading from Wacom Intuos Pro to Huion Kamvas 16 (2020) earlier this year and I'm very happy with it. It feels great and accurate. Your review on it is one of the reason I made the move.

honestly, got the "cheaper" 16 X-Pen, which is not 4k, and, at least with my eyesight, is totally absolutely fine. I find the pen extra good!! Also have an ipad pro, WITH touch screen. Never used the short cuts much. Also, the displacement in my Xpen is unnoticeable. Had a Huion cheaper and smaller one, the pen was not ideal.

please make comparison between xp pen 15.6 pro and xp pen 16 2nd generation. The price almost the same and right now I'm really hard thinking and considering which to choose. I think a lot of people have the same mind with me about this...

I got the wacom cintiq 16 and it is the best purchase ever!!

I got the normal 16 inch wacom and I neither notice the difference between 4k nor do I miss it. Imo it's a far more desirable resolution at larger sizes (20"+) where individual pixels on lower res screens are far more noticable. I genuinely cannot see the pixels in the 1080p version.

What about that latest Ugee tablet. I recently saw a review on it but I still want to hear your opinion and artist tech expertise.

XP pen also has a remote as well. I noticed you mentioned Huion and Wacom but not XP pen. A few hundred dollar is like 500 to almost 600 dollars more is quite a bit more.

Great review all around, Brad! Personally, I do not care for nor use buttons on my display tablet. In fact I would prefer no buttons on the device since because it has to be used in tandem with a computer, I can just keep my subordinate hand on the key board and hit the key commands that I have already memorized. More screen real-estate, less heft, smaller form factor, etc. Not to mention most pens come with a 2nd button so that can be programmed as a context menu. Laminated screen is a must though.

I would LOVE to watch your take on the current AI art news with DALL E 2 and Midjourney! And please let it be livestreamed so we get the most raw reaction of you using one of those systems.

I have the Huion Kamvas 16 Pro 2.5k. Works great. That's a resolution step down from 4k, but it's not detrimental.

Any recommendations on a budget friendly 22 inch pen display?

I know it ultimately comes down to personal preference.... BUT. I've decided to make the leap back into art after a long loonnng time away from creative endeavors after University art school. There's also accessories to consider. For instance, the Wacom Pro Pen Slim is lighter and more comfortable to use for me, which let me draw for longer. Not sure if there is similar option on the Huion/XP-pen side.

I have the kamvas 16 but I have to calibrate it every time I plug it in. :( I never had to do that with my wacom. Any advice?

I just bought the xp pen artist 16 2nd gen and very happy about it! It has sleek design, perfect screen size, laminated display, and for my experience I don’t really find any line wobble, since I personally like to turn on my stabilization hehe Kinda miss the touch feature to pinch zoom in and out or rotate the canvas since I draw on base iPad before, but it is solved by using a quick command which reachable to click beside my drawing canvas, I used CSP and its nice that they allow you to customize your own workspace 😁 It even cheaper than my iPad which cost 430$ while this pen display only 350$! Of course it still more expensive if you need to buy the computer too

Ever since I learned I could use software to map a 8bitdo controller to do any shortcuts I want, I've stopped using the built in shortcut buttons on my screen. Layout is easier to remember, and then I can bring the same exact shortcut device to every single computer I do art on and have it the same.

I thought I will never need any touchscreens for art but drawing on a Galaxy Tab have spoiled me with them that I'll afraid if I ever upgrade to a display tablet my muscle memory will register every drawing on screen = touchscreen lol. knowing the pens have wobble when drawing the lines "without the stabilization/smoothing" is cool and all. But I really want to see how the pen will do when using it in real life scenarios. because nobody will use these pens without the smoothing/stabilization. and most people I know even professional graphics artists, and illustrators is using the pen with the smoothing ON. most of them used "15 smoothing/stabilization" and the lowest I saw, Me included is using "7 smoothing/stabilization".

I just want a good tablet that will last me a long time, I had my cintiq for 7 years and I originally bought it secondhand. anytime I move the tablet the screen cuts out, I've had this issue since I bought it but it's not been as bad as it has been recently. Do wacom products still do this? If so I'd rather buy from xp pen or huion

Thanks Brad for the review! I have the XP-Pen Artist 24, and I find that it's biggest drawback is the drivers. Im on an M1 Mac mini, and several times an hour the pen disconnects or draws a random straight line across the canvas (Photoshop). I've thought about getting the Cintiq Pro 24 with touch, but man that price tag is rough. You say that touch on the Cintiq Pro 16 is good, but how good are we talking? iPad good? 😉

Thanks for this. I tried all three and IMHO, In short, among the 4k options, Wacom is pricey, and Huion/Xpen have quality issues. #1 If you can afford it, the Wacom is the safest way to go. Best quality hardware w built in express keys and legs, best pen, best drivers. #2 Huion and Xp_pen 4k models feel like Ver 1.0. Decent quality, but with rough edges and questionable design choices. The Wacom really shines here as Ver 2.0++ A. Huion 16 4k rounded shell back shape does not work well with some stands. The fit of the shell to the screen is poor and comes apart too easy and can result it the screen warping. B. Xp_Pen 16 4k Pen is dated and performs poorly compared to the others, plus it has only 1 side barrel button. Hardware drivers may be questionable. #3 Huion later released a "2.5K" 16 model with much better hardware design (I tried that one too), lower priced w the same screen color as the top end 4k model. Over time the options have evolved a bit * Wacom 16 Pro 2021 can now be bought new on Ebay for ~ $800-$900 from time to time. If you need 4k and/or touch this is the best choice. * Huion 16 2.5K has much improved hardware. and is the most portable in the ~$500 price range. If you don't need touch or 4K this option is outstanding for value and portability. * Xp-Pen is showing off brand-new pen tech, so it might be good to wait to see how that works out?

I started having problems with my XP pen 15.6 inch tablet so I'll probably be looking for some other options cause I love the size but it's just having weird issues and the size that was below it wasn't having as many issues as this one which is weird

I wish you could help me with this one, on the wacom cintiq 16 when I zoom out the canvas, the line looks super jagged, and when I zoom in it looks normal, is that normal? Even tho Im working on a 300dpis canvas and the line of the brush is 14px

Of the budget friendly options, which would you say has the best initial activation force? I draw with a very light hand, so for me the big dealbreaker I've had with many tablets has been high initial activation force. I got a Huion tablet a few years ago, and everything about it was fine EXCEPT for the activation force. Strokes would start just a little bit late, and, most frustratingly, taps on UI buttons wouldn't register if I didn't put in a conscious effort to press hard enough. I had to switch it out for a cintiq, but now that's been showing it's age, so I'm looking for a solid 16-inch.

Oh wow, seeing how much cheaper the Kamvas is, while having hotkey buttons, AND being pretty close on the colors, I think I know my next tablet to replace my old Gaumon pd1560. Thanks much ^^

So I had a quinceañera recently and got a lot of money, so I’m deciding to upgrade to a screen tablet! But I’ve been super torn about wether to get the xp pen artist pro 16 or to get the xp pen artist 22 2nd gen. I was leaning a bit more towards the xp pen 22 but now I think I might get the 16 instead. This is just because I’m only 15, so I don’t think I need the huge screen anytime soon since I’m not a professional lol. And although I never used buttons on my screen less drawing tablet, idk if it will be the same for one with a screen. And if I do stick with my plan rn to go to college for visual illustration and I find that I need a better tablet, I’ll do another upgrade when that time comes. Also, I can always return the artist pro 16 if I don’t like it ʅ（•~•）ʃ

one reason why i think they removed the short cut keys on the wacom display tablets (that would personally affect me as a lefty) could be that the tablet has a stand and only is usable on one side unlike the intuos for example where you can simply flip the tablet over and have the keys on the righthand side. So if it came with the keys i couldnt even use them and would have my palm accidently pressing all the buttons... And as theres every 1/10 people lefthanded you are losing 10% customers that way who cant use your product

Express keys are on both sides! Yay! So I am happy as a left handed artist!!!!!

I loved Wacom, however they lost me as a customer over the years due to overpriced products, quirks in the drivers, and just design elements that were not as good as good as the alternatives. Would love to go back if they actually got competitive in both price and design.

no I don't really look at my tablet that close due to the problem with my neck, so I put it as close to 90 degrees as possible and my head would be on my chair so no I don't really go that close to my face.

I used to have a Kamvas 13, and I loved it until I had an issue where it would keep jumping to the select tool in Photoshop and then I couldn’t draw with it. I tried everything for like a month before I gave up. I have friends who didn’t have that problem, but for whatever reason, I could never find a solution. It made my Kamvas unusable. Anyone else have a similar problem, or a solution for said problem?
