The video presents a very comprehensive view of the circular economy and its importance in facing contemporary environmental challenges. However, by considering some nuances, we can further enrich the discussion. For example, although the idea of turning waste into resources is crucial, we must be aware of the potential technical and economic challenges involved. Not all materials are easily recyclable or reusable, and some recycling processes may require a considerable amount of energy or additional resources. Furthermore, it is important to recognize that the circular economy is not a one-size-fits-all solution to all environmental problems. It must be combined with other approaches, such as reducing excessive consumption and implementing cleaner and more efficient technologies. Another point to consider is the need for equity and social justice in the transition to a circular economy. We must ensure that the most vulnerable communities are not left behind and that everyone has access to sustainability-related employment and education opportunities. Furthermore, it is important to recognize that the transition to a circular economy will require significant changes to our economic and political systems, which may meet resistance from certain sectors of society or vested interests. However, despite these challenges, the circular economy remains a promising approach to mitigating the negative environmental impacts of our economic activity and promoting a more sustainable and resilient future.

This video by Sustainability Illustrated offers a brilliant breakdown of the circular economy, making complex concepts easy to understand. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on substitution and dematerialization as key transition strategies. The analogy of explaining the circular economy to a child was both charming and insightful.

So how does the video define the term "cradle to cradle" in the context of the circular economy?
@learnsustainability
@learnsustainability 3 ай бұрын
The video does not really define this term but "cradle to cradle" (see the book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things) comes in opposition to "cradle to grave" and suggests that everything is healthy food for something else and that materials stay in a closed loop.

Clear video. But I am still searching for an answer to the question how can we get everybody worldwide employed in the circular economy. I'd love to have a circular economy but I'm afraid that the persons initially benefiting from it are the well educated well paid few. So I am looking for literature, with numerical examples, that show how in a circular economy, where we will inevitably use less resources, we can still keep everybody in work (well, almost everybody). Also Tim Jackson (Prosperity without growth) is kind of vague how we are going to obtain the transition from our current economy to a circular one. But of course we have to start somewhere. Thanks for your video.
@learnsustainability
@learnsustainability 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I personally think that operating a circular economy is just a different way to do things and I don't see why it would employ fewer people or benefit the well educated. We will still need to mine resources (either virgin or from recycled materials), design products, manufacture them, repair and maintain them and then disassemble and recycle.

If the plants give animals oxygen, then the animals give carbon dioxide to plants. Then are we useful to them in some way? Or do we just need them to survive and they don't need us? Amazing video that you made finally made me understand. :)

Good question. You should probably search for a natural science or photosynthesis course to get more details but in a nutshell, yes, we (animals) deliver nutrients/compost/poop as well as CO2 to plants and they provide us with oxygen and sugar.

Italy is a country that in recent years has often been exposed to the effects of climate change. Problems such as rising temperatures, irregular rainfall and rising sea levels are causing serious damage to natural ecosystems and the Italian agricultural sector. Air pollution in major cities is on the rise causing health problems. Furthermore, even the historic buildings and works of art that symbolize Italy are negatively affected by the effects of climate change. The Italian government is taking several measures to combat these problems and adopt measures for sustainability. These include promoting renewable energy sources, increasing energy efficiency and encouraging environmentally friendly agricultural practices. However, it is clear that more international cooperation is needed in the fight against climate change. Poyraz Kadirhan Erasmus Sersale

The idea for repairable products with long life and recycling violates the very basic principles and the side effects of Capitalism. 1) Maximum possible price for the worst possible quality 2) Capitalism creates empty houses (i.e. Capital) and homeless people ( Extreme poverty). 3) Profit is King ! 'Profit' and 'sustainable economy' are incompatible. Nature has created somewhat sustainable eco-system which generate surplus (i.e. Profit) , which, in turn, results in re-adjustment of the ecosystem to absorb/eliminate the surplus (i.e. Profit) . HOWEVER, in contrast to the man-made economic rules/laws, the nature has no laws which to protect ownership of Wealth or the ownership of the surplus. In conclusion, The subject of your video is a pipe-dream unless you seriously address the issue of designing a system of political-economy which allows sustainability as a side effect.
