Simultaneous shadow projection of circular motion and an oscillating mass on a spring. We see that the vertical component of the circular motion is identical to that of the vertically oscillating mass. This simple harmonic motion can be mathematically modeled over time with sinusoidal functions.
The 8 cm diameter plastic ball is mounted near the edge of a 46 cm diameter disk and is driven by a Bodine Electric Co type NS1-33R speed reducer motor. The disk is cut from 1/8" thick masonite. The mass weighs 20 N, and was fortunately paired with a spring to match the speed of the motor. Illumination is provided by a Kodak slide projector.
Thanks for watching!

So THAT's what all the geniuses over at Harvards are doing all day, dancing around and swinging balls! 😂👍 I must say, that really does sound like the smart way of living your life! 😉

Thank you. I now have a physical analogy for the rational behind circular motion and oscillation. I was a little mystified on how newton equated his measurement of the pendulum with his other work in The principia.

it is used to study SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION (SHM). With this concept, we can apply the phasor method and find the value of time period or distance traveled by the object in a fixed interval of time. This method is conceptually easy and easier to solve questions based on SHM

Wow that spring maintains it’s energy very constantly.
@Carter-dv4hz
@Carter-dv4hz 2 жыл бұрын
No that would be against the first law of thermodynamics. The spring dissipates its energy as heat into the surrounding air. The rate of dissipation is not constant but rather an exponentially decaying curve. Assuming you do not add energy to the system the system will come to rest. Nothing is maintained.

Yes, yes very constant...and the moment the ball on the spring was free to fall, that was so casual

Daniel... thank you... tricky to set up BUT you nailed this... How about turning the rotating sphere and matching it to a pendulum... after all this is a classic and would compliment this mass spring system? Thanks again BTW Aerox has a valid point!

Nah, there are no gimmicks like that involved here. Basically, the vertical component of the circular motion is sinusoidal, and so is that of a spring. By rotating the table at just the right rate, and giving the spring the same amplitude, they can be in exact synchronicity.

@@NatSciDemos• I know this OFF Topic yet I feel someone should indeed be made aware that the notion of Earth Rotational Velocity being 1,000 mph is in fact an absolute Fallacy. The circumference towards either Poles is less diameter than at the Equator meaning 1,000 mph morphs into 0 mph at the Poles? If I am traveling 1,000 mph w/ my legs yet my torso is only moving 100 mph. What do you think would happen to Earth let alone the human anatomy if such conclusions were accurate? Earth would cease to exist. Just like the body of that human would be ripped apart. - Thx

@@NatSciDemosIt’s not that your Mathematical Equations are Wrong. It’s rather that your use of Mathematics is not actually describing the Velocity of Earth rotation at all whatsoever. You are literally applying Tire mileage of a Car upon the Earth claiming Small tires rotated at the same Velocity as Big tires cover less Asphalt Mileage. Well obviously yet the Rotation velocity is still Identical, right? The Correct Answer : Earth Rotation Speed is 1/24 Hours. 0.041666666666667 Rotations per Hour. Jupiter Rotation Speed is 1/10 Hours. 0.1 Rotations per Hour. The Solar Rotation is 1/648 Hours ( 27 Days) 0.001543209876543 Rotations per Hour. Obviously the Solar Rotation is way slower Rotation than that of Earth yet you all claimed the exact Opposite. Why is that?
