As a teenage Indian girl, maximum student suicides happens because of government exams and comparison pressure to other children. Spirituality is lost in parenting in Indian parents.

I left social media in 2019 and it's quite peaceful and blissful. I was addicted but life is beautiful with myself and family.

Forget UPSC I hv witnessed a 10th std. Child get a heart attack while having a morning walk father was walking behind him. He fainted full of sweat and just died in 10 mins. Later found out that parents made him study while eating food even mom used to feed him like a baby. No play. No calls with relatives. No tv no phone. No family talks. Time table from 5 AM was fixed till 10.30 pm. Only tuition study and eating. Only talks happened were abt kya subject kiya aj ..kitna baki hai etc.neighbours explained everything later. Now his mother is literally mad..father in depression.

Credit goes to the highly competitive parenting 'love' given by Indian parents.. No level of achievement of the child satisfies the parents thirst for increasing their reputation in society.. Exhausting to be an Indian son, the average son at the least!

Kapiel, here in Brazil we have a strong culture of getting into government jobs too. We have exams with millions of applicants. We have prep courses for it too. We even have a word for anyone who studies for these jobs: concurseiro.

My nephews who were homeschooled are now grown and very successful. They are confident and their creativity and fearlessness has been a big part of their success.

Reminds me of the Indian Movie “3 Idiots” where the scene where they sing ‘All Is Well’ then later find out..all wasn’t well..especially that one student. 😢 Life is precious folks. Don’t treat your kids or your life like a race..what’s at the end of the race? The finish line. Whats the finish line? End of your life. Instead treat it like a marathon. A gift. Keep going and do your best, every day.

Only someone who has studied and sat for such exams knows what pressure and cracking under pressure means. It’s a period of time no one should go through, even though it builds character. The PTSD stays with you for a while and shapes your worldview to a great extent.

Hey, just for your correction. Without writing them off, it's not just men. Girls go through this as well. The pressure of competition also falls on females. When they do get established, it becomes about looks as well. It's a sad sad situation for both genders in India. It is my only reason to travel outside, to breathe. Without unhealthy comparison and competition.

I'm an 18 year old Indian girl, I'm the oldest in the both sides of my family so there has always been this pressure on me to do well achieve the best etc etc. I wanted to study social sciences/economics after high school but my parents forced me into this rat race of IITs and engineering even though I had a clear conversation with my parents on how I don't want to pursue it. I took a gap year in 2023 after my 12th grade and wrote my JEE a few days ago. Results came out 2 weeks ago and turns out I performed worse than I did last year, I tried my best but now my parents think my failure is connected to our apartment number and are searching for new places to relocate, I'm sick and tired of explaining them. They blame me saying how I'm an aethist and that's the reason for my downfall in life (I'm not an aethist FYI, I just don't belive in rituls and all, I believe in karma and fulfilling my responsibilities as a daughter sister etc but never disrespected their beliefs) I am stuck in this loop of self blame and guilt and the worst part is I can't even seek professional help.

This isn't just india problem. Happens in most of the asian countries. Korea, china, japan..etc. i just want ti exist in some ither planet somethimes. And thank you for mum and dad pushing me stuff that i never asked. Love it ever second (!)

OMG! Thanks for addressing this, it is at first science stream, then either doctor or engineer, if not then BSC, MSC, IITs, PhD and ultimately all to government jobs, for each seat there are at least 1K candidates. It is a different kind of trauma-giving, these folks ultimately feel like failures if not get into a government job for the rest of their lives as society gives some sympathetic looks. Its disgusting.

As a elder daughter I can say I have more pressure other than my brother my parents never told him to crack any exam or job they will be happy if he graduated within the desired year and do any work but for me since my childhood to now I'm always under pressure

Yup. First they kill your hobbies and passions, make you work your ass off, control your life decisions for “your own good”, and then when you’ve “achieved it all” they ask why you’re dead inside with no passions or will to live. Classic Indian parenting.

Good that you addressed this. Can’t stress how people of this generation have given themselves into this whole rat race and losing their self in the process. The fault is in the social fabric here in India, there are lot of things need to be changed starting from education system, employment etc but the way families pressurise their kids to do well also compare with others makes it hard for kids to cope up. Especially parents look at their kids progress as their way to growth in the society and not letting or supporting kids with their choice. Parents here take it personally as its their self esteem will be in stake if kids don’t do well. This whole mindset needs to be changed😢

Thank you for speaking up About this. I am 18 and I know everyone since 16yrs old are under this pressure!! Everyone!!!!!!!!!!! I Myself have anxiety and episodes of depression. My parents the most loving parents in the world turned cold towards my depression and anxiety. If my PARENTS could do this then any parent can. I have lost bond with Them. They have literally turned cold to my tears. As u said I no longer subscribe to this idea. But For where I see purpose atleast for now I need to get min marks just to secure my purpose. Ofc if I knew What my purpose really is I would switch. It feels very light to let go of This pressure. Never imagined I could feel thus calm. Sad reality is even I talk About it to help my peers they would reject the idea.

Great video but I'll share some info in case anyone wonder why Indians want government job so bad. In India there's practically no labour laws, we don't have proper payment, rights, stability, leave or anything for the welfare of employees. We don't even have the right to leave workplace after the shift, it's a whole lot of hours and sacrificing your life for the boss and for shitty wages. And the bosses are so insecure that they treat you badly and gets a kick out of it. Probably because the bosses themselves were treated badly and are somehow acting their trauma out. Only a government job can ensure you get the minimum treatment people in more developed countries enjoy. Only the government employees have stability, leaves, proper work life balance, decent payment, etc. and that makes it so much desirable that even the Engineers are trying for 10th grade level government examinations and tests thereby creating an insane level of competition even for the lowest paying govt job. That's how miserable private firms and the law is in India. Many people try to leave this country in search of better life. Even the post graduates are leaving country for warehouse jobs to UK, Canada, Australia because they have much comfortable lives there and make far more than they could ever make in here. So it's not just to make parents proud it's to get a bit more comfortable living for you and your family.

Hi Kapiel. I am from India. I took 2 drops for my JEE exam, but failed in both of them miserably. The mind boggling stress that I put myself to for the past 4 years, took away all of my mental and physical well being. Our parents are from middle class background, so people look upto this entrance exams as a God-send or as a ticket to uplift their standards of living. Honestly speaking, I always wanted to be a World Chess Champion. But now I'm barely in college, did nothing special rather than just beated my ass out, only to get nothing in return. I used to look at my birth chart and hate myself for the malefic planetary conditions that I have in my birth chart. Life feels really stagnated and slow, nothing to look forward to at times. I'm running my Saturn Mahadasha since 2020. I don't know if'll ever be able to do well in my life. On top of that, I lost my father on 26th January :)

I would like to add that unspoken expectations can weigh as heavy or even heavier on the son or daughter who feels the pressure to achieve. Blessed are the parents who decide to keep their children away from the competition which takes place in the conventional learning system.

Finally someone talked about this, I am in MSC chemistry, have been following astrology and KRS since a long time, and believe me what have I not done, to see any exam cracking yoga. Not to say have'nt worked that hard. But at the same time, it isn't that easy. :( Don't really have any family assets to do something else so exam is the only option.

The recent movie on this topic, 12th Fail, literally sums up the struggle a person has to go through to crack these competitive exams.

Let me tell you the reason - recent slowdown in Tech domain has resulted in job cuts , sacking . A person employed for years in Google, Amazon, Ms is sacked . This person has the talent,hence got the job , but now on the streets in sea of uncertainty and stress. Compare it to a Government job - even if the economy goes on toss , you'll get the salary on time , there's no such thing as cost cutting ✂️ hence firing . They simply don’t love their children. I am sorry but just look at the abortion rate for female babies. They will pay for their karma. No soul should be abused. When i was teenager i never understood why parents put pressure. Now as a parent myself i understand. It is sad that in India taxes are high and there is no govt support for middle class if anything negative happens like loss of job or hospitalization. Really a parent cannot provide for children's entire life. So all they want is a child to get financially independent so they will be ok. In earlier times family members and extended family will always help but now with nuclear family setup that has reduced. So its every peraon for himself or herself and no fall back on social security. And with high inflation parents push their children towards high paying jobs. But it would be good to explain or convince children and maintain balance between study and fun. And to support them rather than micro manage children and push them to depression.
