In this third episode we go to Cisternino, the medieval village overlooking the Itria valley, in Puglia. This is a walking tour to discover one of Italy's hidden gems.
Cisternino is an example of spontaneous architecture. Its medieval historic center is a maze of narrow streets that open onto unexpected squares, among period buildings, towers and white houses. Getting lost in the whiteness of its alleys, away from the confusion, is the best thing you can do on a late summer afternoon or on a warm winter day. The town stands on a hill so there is no shortage of panoramic points from which to admire the magnificent sunset over the Itria valley and its trulli.
Cisternino, orange flag of the Italian Touring Club in 2003, also boasts a highly respectable gastronomic tradition, especially centered on roast meat-based dishes, among which the famous "bombette" stand out. Absolutely worth trying.
Cisternino, in the province of Brindisi, can be easily reached from Alberobello by following the state road 172 to Locorotondo and then the provincial road 134, for about 18 kilometers in total. From Ostuni instead, take the provincial road 17 in a north-west direction for 16 kilometres.
