Cities are 'the biggest hurdle' for Tesla's robotaxi: Analyst

RBC Capital Markets Global Autos Analyst Tom Narayan has lowered his price target for Tesla (TSLA) from $293 to $227, citing concerns about the company's anticipated robotaxi project. Narayan joins the Morning Brief to share his perspective on the electric vehicle giant's outlook.
Narayan's price target revision was influenced by two key factors. First, he anticipates lower pricing in the rideshare industry by the time robotaxi launches. Second, he projects higher revenue share percentages for rideshare platforms like Uber (UBER) and Lyft (LYFT), potentially diminishing robotaxi's valuation. Despite these concerns, Narayan maintains that the robotaxi project will be the "biggest contributor of value for Tesla."
However, Narayan emphasizes that "the biggest hurdle" for this technology lies not in its development but in infrastructure adaptation. "The tech isn't that really far away, it's not the tech. It's really the cities need to reengineer themselves," Narayan explains to Yahoo Finance.

Waymo is far ahead, in existence for a decade, but it is still a very limited operation. Tesla doesn't even have one robotaxi on the street yet.

When he says 5-10 years he means that he is not even sure if it ever will happen 😂 Thats how Analysts are taught to talk. They have to make it open ended. Never ever close and make a judgement.

I think robotaxis will work better in the suburbs where streets look the same and predictable. I like Tom. His insights on TSLA is grounded.

Well, I just completed a road trip of about 300 miles, my second in a month, in my Model 3. The car did 99% of the driving. The next version, which is in limited release now, is truly hands-free. The version after that is already in testing. And so on. The thing I disagree with most is his statement that the rollout will be limited in scale. Wrong. Maybe at first, but there are already six million cars that can become fully autonomous with a software update. And they are beginning in China as well as locations in the US.

He is saying that you would still need the Uber app. You would not need a human driver, but you would still need an app to: call for a ride, pinpoint your location, process payments, etc. The Uber app is already developed and widely adopted, so they have a first mover advantage.
