Not only is this song incredibly well written and addictive to listen to, but the attention to detail is insane. It's about addictive dependant toxic, hateful relationships sure but it also depicts little known parts of that that people might not catch the first time around. My favorite example of this is the breathy way the line "I think we're in too deep" is sung. It's done in a way where just by the singer exhales (as if the breathing itself takes effort or is difficult to breathe, which is reminiscent of how toxicity makes it so it feels like people are so trapped that it feels like they can't breathe) that part of the song, it depicts the exhaustion such relationships cause. It takes a huge toll on people, such that the addictive cycle drains them of their emotional energy, but the people in that relationship are too hooked on each other (in a twisted, terrible way) that they can't bring themselves to stop. They don't know how to, or are even sure they're able to. They've been in the relationship for so long that the constant fighting and hate "kills" the person they used to be, leaving a hateful, destructive shell behind in the process. Also, the lines about how these two people in the song crave the misery, get off on feeling low, and are willing victims every time to the hunger every time they cross each other's minds just goes to show how destructive addictive-dependant relationships to everyone involved. In which craving the misery + getting off on feeling low = craving the fights they have/instigate because it's the only way they know how to function. As if they're actively anticipating the next fight just to get at each other's tbroats. In which "we can't fight the hunger. Willing victims every time. Every time you cross my mind it's like a moth drawn to the flame." = Being unable to fight the "hunger" that is mutual hatred towards each other. These two people are willing victims to it because instead of the hate being cause for them to part ways, it's what keeps them there. Instead they're drawn to each other because they hate each other so much. They've been at it for so long that it feels good to hate. It feels good to yell and shout and scream at each other because hate is the ultimate drug to them. It's the cycle that keeps them there. 1. Misery and suffering at each other's hands. 2. Anger at the maltreatment/putting each other through pain and misery, such that both partners blame each other. 3. Pure anger turns to passion, leading to them making hate to each other (also known as hate sex), which in turn causes yet more tension. 4. That tension turns to adrenaline, which causes one or both partners to stay on each other's minds after the fact, filling them with anger and a need to take out that anger on each other. To make each other miserable. And the cycle begins anew.
