I so respect Citroen's engineering in its hydraulic suspension system. When you raised the car, it is so wonderful. Getting out of your snow must be a bit of an overly difficult challenge. Thank you for your video upload. It was wonderful!

I owned a 1971 D-Special in the late 80s. It was a magnificent car. I was living in Vancouver at the time and had an honest, local specialty shop to look after it. But alas, even though the hydropneumatics held up, little things keeps kept breaking. The car was eating me out of house and home, so I had to give it up. Now I drive a Jaguar. (I know that sounds funny, but modern Jags are super reliable.) Cars are important to me. They must be designed with passion. I cannot imagine a car created with greater passion than the DS-series Citroen. I miss my D-Special. I know it's just a machine. But it felt as if that particular car was built for me alone. Always the sign of a great automobile, and nothing to do with price or prestige.

It looks really nice. I'm buying one in silver & black roof next week then driving it to the French alpes. One of the more interesting cars that has been made. Let's see more classics & vintage on the road - the sight of today's cars bores me to death

The non-USA 1968> headlight glasses will not fit on USA-headlighted cars as the headlight mounting sticks out past the fender line. Acrylic/Plexi covers are shaped to clear the bulge.Non-USA SM headlight glasses will fit on USA lights though the retaining stainless trims between the headlight glasses and the center number plate are shaped slightly differently.Acrylic headlight covers have been available for the SM. The original Sekurit/Cibié glasses are scarce and expensive. I got pretty good service out of the five Citroens I drove despite their state of neglect and abuse when I got them. Every other car I have had rode like a log wagon by comparison.Today a Citroen is just a badge-engineered Peugeot. The last hydraulique Citroen will be discontinued soon. Most hydraulics on all cars are supplanted by electric. The "DS" kind of oleopneumatics, despite upgrading with computer control, are more expensive and don't sell cars.

So , was the later DS supplied in the USA with the acrylic covers over the head lights ? Or was it just a mod on your car ?
@mrmarco538 жыл бұрын
+magna59 USA spec models were never supplied with the headlight covers. Many cars have had them added later, or were privately imported European models. My car does not have covers.
@magna598 жыл бұрын
+mrmarco53 Thank you for your reply . Does one of the sets .turn with the steering ? Always like the first version , with the single head light , over the European second version , but the US uncovered is the best version i ' ve seen .... due to yourself . Were many imported to US ? Did you get the GS ? / BX ?
@mrmarco538 жыл бұрын
+magna59 The inner, high-beam headlights turned with the steering. This is the European, covered headlights only. US headlights did not move. I had a 2CV for several years, but no other models.
@magna598 жыл бұрын
+mrmarco53 Non moving headlight . Same . Though i ' m sure without the cover it would be a mission to organise without the problem of grott traps . I understood you did not have a GS or BX , as you have not shown them ...... but did they get imported to the US ? The GS , i though was inspired , all the advantages of the DS , but without the gloss & the early BX had the quality of both & the early ones still had that idiosyncratic quality in the cabin ............. & then Citroen went boring . The Xantia has the shape & the suspension ..... but are soo much more FORD/GM . Why would we scare the horses ?

@mrmarco538 жыл бұрын
+Jim & Carol Ashworth The snow was very heavy and wet. It packs down and becomes very slippery. The tires are not suited for these conditions. That said, what you suggest might have helped a bit.

Reading some of the comments, some of you ignoramus's deserve the firing squad. This car came out at the Paris Auto show in 1955! In the first 15 minutes they sold 743 for a grand total 12.000 the first day. (Ouote from Wikipedia) It was revolutionary. Each wheel was independently sprung and self levelling. It had three ride hights, low, normal and high. It was one of the first cars to utilize Michelin Radial tires which we all drive on now. It had disk brakes, the suspension was a nitrogen and a special fluid which gave the it's legendary ride. Far ahead of any American makes or anybody for that matter. Educate your selves before you call a "frogmobile". This was a car so far ahead of its time it would still be modern by todays standards. It had a metal body and a fibreglass roof which could support the weight of the car. There are so many features of this vehicle which are in common use today that can trace their DNA directly back to this Car. One interesting historical fact: General De Gaulle gave full credit when he survived an assassination attempt when the cars self levelling suspension allowed him to survive and drive away on flat tires. From that day he refused to drive in anything that wasen't a Citroen DS.
