After some feedback about my first range test in the Citroen e-C4 where I drove the car in normal mode the entire journey, I thought it would be a good idea to repeat the test in Eco mode to see what difference if any it would make.
I wasn't expecting the end result!

listen 300km range is more than enough for every person on the planet, especially if you have a wife that needs to take a piss every hour... so if you are close to running it dry just fill it up at the gas station for 15 min... and bum you got a range increase

@@Brandofviti we're loving it! Really glad we went for the shine plus trim. Super comfy and easy to drive. It has enough acceleration to get up to speed quickly for dual carriageway etc. and range has been accurate. We've done one longer stint of motorway driving which used just over half the battery to do roughly 90 miles and that was in normal mode, with air con and driving assist on.

I have had a Citroen e-C4 for about four months. I just need a car for knocking about. Got rid of my Toyota C-HR hybrid which I thought was very economical. How wrong I was, I usually drive around 120 miles before I top up costing me £15 in petrol. I drive using eco mode except when I need to set off fast. Now I charge my car up after 120 miles and it costs me £2.60 in electricity for a 45% charge. I use Octopus Energy using the Octopus Go charges from 12.30 am till 4.30am at 9p per kilowatt. When octopus puts citroen on their Octopus Intelligent tariff the charge will be 6 hours of charging every night at 7p per kilowatt. Can't wait. Steve Crawley

Hi. Thanks for a clear and level headed presentation. I've been driving a C5 Exclusive tourer for ten years now, and soft air suspension and low noise levels is something I thought would never again emerge from Citroen at my level of available cash. Now, Surprise surprise, up comes a C4 with a similar level of comfort and noise control, and electric to boot. Well done Citroen. My only worry was range. 150 mile minimum is essential for my kind of travelling. You have reassured things greatly. Thanks again.

Thanks for this video. We got an e-C4 in September last year and the most range I have achieved is 116 miles on a full charge, this was using the car in Eco Mode, driving very carefully, with a top speed of about 60mph. I love the comfort of the car but we cannot achieve anywhere near the 217 miles range stated by Citroen..
@EleanorPeterson
@EleanorPeterson 3 жыл бұрын
Just a general point about eco-driving in ANY car: going at 70 mph is a truly terrible idea. Hammering along at the UK national limit will get you from A to B right enough, but it's lousy for fuel economy. No matter what you drive, the air is just as dense, and pushing the stuff out of the way uses an enormous amount of power. Air behaves like a fluid; imagine trying to wade through knee-deep water. Now try running through it, and think how much more effort's required. Driving more slowly will save an astonishing amount of fuel. Dropping from 70 to 56 mph will do wonders for your fuel economy, whether you're driving a micro-car or a bus. No, driving at 56 mph isn't as manly as charging about at 70, 80, or 90, but it'll save you a shedload of dosh. Modern cars are so quiet and refined at speed that a lot of people fail to appreciate the amount of effort it takes to push air out of the way. It's something a biker soon discovers, but car drivers, cocooned in air-conditioned comfort, often have no idea why their fuel economy figures are so bad. Just slow down, guys. Never mind "But the limit is 70, so I MUST drive at 80+." Slow down. Your wallet will thank you. ;-)

When speed doubles, air resistance quadruplicate. Also don't drive with underinflated tyres. Rather overinflate for better mileage. Maybe bit less comfort but good for range.

Very interesting review. I have the Peugeot e-208 so same battery etc, I've found the closer you get to 10 degrees the efficiency increases quite rapidly, probably to do with the battery chemistry. Eco mode trains you to drive more gently and smoothly which is the biggest increase in efficiency and also very little heating which is too chilly for me when below 10+ degrees, good for kwh but not for comfort. As a reasonably experienced ev driver I tend to get the same efficiency driving in normal and eco mode. The surge in acceleration you get from ev's is often the biggest range killer as to get that in an ice car you'd need to spend 50 grand +, can be quite addictive for some people but if driven gently and smoothly most people would get the same kwh whichever mode they're in.

@@chargeelectric9905 I just discovered your e-C4 videos today. What an eye-opener this eco mode test was... I also wouldn't have suspected that it would make such a big difference. Of course I subscribed to your channel too, I did it while watching your first e-C4 video ("real world test"), made my way through the normal mode range test and now this eco mode range test... Many thanks for testing this car again in the eco mode! What a surprise... Who would have thought that... I'm still marvelling what the trade-off might be. Was your average speed the same? You already said that the outside temperature was similar, the route was the same, was the wind similar? (Anyway, it was a test where you returned to your starting point, that should eliminate the wind anyway). Of curse, the power is limited in eco mode, this is limiting the acceleration, well, but if that is the only price to "pay" to get 190 miles of range (300km) for longer distances on a motorway at moderate speeds, that would be a valid compromise.
@chargeelectric9905

Thank you so much for subscribing. The weather was very similar although about 3 degrees warmer. Eco mode does reduce the power a bit, but I still had enough to overtake a slow moving lorry on a B road. The climate control still maintained a comfortable temperature. I must admit I wasn't expecting that much of a difference to the range.

This was really interesting comparison between normal and eco driving modes. I have been considering buying the eC4 but was slightly put off by the efficiency (and real range) compared to other EV’s like e-Niro, ID3 and Renault Zoe for a long journey. However it does have faster charging than the other cars. Now I know about eco mode it tips my choice of EV back towards the eC4 again. It also helps that Citroen UK have just cut £900 off the price of the top spec Shine Plus to bring it back under £35,000 and keep the new EV grant. Setting the limit at £35,000 has removed the grant for cars like e-Niro and Id3 (in the spec that I wanted) and moved them out of my budget unless I compromise on spec. The eC4 is now a real strong contender with excellent spec. Good move Citroen with the price cut and with the excellent efficiency in eco mode.

Here in Norway the e-C4 is presented as a 350 km range car, in my tests driving in normal mode, with most of the time using cruise control, at an average speed of 60-65 km/hr it only gave a range of 225Km the same as my old good e-Golf. I have to mention that the outside temperature was 10 C° and dry asphalt. The range was disappointing, the upgraded sound system was not good at all, the infotainment was not intuitive and the acceleration I’ll not even comment about. But I need to say that it was a comfy car, with plenty space for the passengers. Now I’ve bought a Tesla Model 3 and for kinda the same price.

I have an eC4 and while I don’t think it is any worse (or better) than other bev’s, I have to say I am deeply disappointed with the achievable winter range. I find myself paying for a charge that disappears into the ether before my eyes instead of returning the mileage indicated. Combined with rising charges for electricity, it makes fuelling up more expensive and a lot more inconvenient than petrol or diesel.

Hi thanks so much for doing that. I’ll Definitely be ordering one of these or the 2008. one question, in the first range test you also had the climate control on 19°. Did you have the climate control on this time? If not I wonder how much of the difference was because of the climate control and how much the eco-button? Is it possible to have the climate control on when eco-is selected? With some EV’s it is not. What difference did you notice in terms of performance with the eco or was it very marginal? Thank you so much for doing this as I may have mentioned I’m totally blind and will be getting this on the motability scheme so it’s nice to know that I’ll be able to get to my parents without having to stop and charge. B-mode, or regen mode, has nothing really to help when driving longer journeys except if you are going down a very steep hill or driving in the city. Regen these EV cars can achieve is overrated. I would like to know if it is ok to freewheel in neutral on EVs like this one?

Hi. You say that you are averaging so many miles per kilowatt. For the sake of accuracy, you are averaging so many miles per kilo watt hour (kWh),which is the unit of electrical energy capacity. Hope this helps.

None of these electric cars have the range they claim. I know ppl who own ev cars and a lot of them are frustrated with the lies they were told. During winter a lot of the folks I know at work who own ev, told me they don’t even get anywhere near 210km. The heating and AC kills the battery and other thing’s amongst just those two. They’re a big waste of money just to say you own a cool electric car, and that you “care” about the environment. When they figure out their battery issues and distance I’ll give a try, but no way am I paying thousands for a car that cant even give me at least 800km. Imagine having to stop several times to charge a car. Smh

Just test drove this vehicle today at local dealer. My rating in comparison to other EV models driven would be 6/10. Disliked the lightness of steering HUD you cannot see unless you have seat in lowest position. Infotainment system dull. Driving selector switches awkward. Lots of body roll in corners. Slow in comparison to other models 0-62. Only positives was the comfortable seats and progressive comfort suspension. VW ID3/HYUNDAI KONA/KIA NIRO miles ahead in drive quality and range. Sorry Citroën but you are not in the game yet!
