I was a small kid when the XM was released. Back in those days my uncle was a mechanic working for Citröen and i remember well the first time i saw it. It looked like a spaceship, I was so impressed. Many years later I owned a Xantia myself, I got a lemon and it was a terrible car, but it lasted like 15 years 😢
@dailyingxm4 ай бұрын
When the XM was launched, I wasn’t born yet. My mom and dad both drove XMs one berline and one break. For long time I didn’t really like break XMs and I thought that break Xantias were better looking, but over the time the design has grown on me. If your Xantia lasted 15 years with you, can it be that bad?
@mundocpc4 ай бұрын
@@dailyingxm I always liked the XMs more, probably due to that amazing initial impression I had 😄 The Xantia lasted, yep, but because we patched it up like crazy. To be honest, those were my teen years and I also crashed it a couple of times, that did not help. I remember driving it to the scrapyard without working suspension, stuck in the highest position! It was bouncing like a kangaroo 😄

@@dailyingxm your reply gave me an idea of how damn old I am. I was like 5 when XM was released, although it didn't really hit the streets in my country back then, it was a rare sight even a few years later. Still, I was kinda targeting one of these in 2011, this or Renault Safrane, they looked like fun cars to have and drive. Didn't happen, got a Lancia instead. XD
@dailyingxm4 ай бұрын
@@BluesyBor XMs were here ultra-rare also. At the end of the production there were 817 XM registered in Finland. It’s usually a safe bet that when you see an XM nowadays it’s imported from Germany in mid 00s, mine included. When I got my driver’s license, I didn’t even think XM as an option nor any other Citroen. I was really heavy in SAAB 900s as I have always had one since I was 10. I fell in XMs first time when I loaned my brothers ’89 V6 XM and then I knew that I really had to have one.

I was quite surprised at how well it started and how well the battery handled the cold. I like to use Total Quartz 5w-40 and I change oil and filter every 10k km. It might not be the best at -30c, but we rarely have this extreme cold, usually it gets only around -25c. Most of the time I'm also using engine block heater. I agree, at least Fiats utility vehicles are tough vehicles. My brother owns a Peugeot Boxer with 2.8 Iveco diesel and it has been really reliable and starts like nothing at -25c with only glow plugs.I hope that your car serves you well!

There's a Dutch Citroën specialist who tends to use HGB (from Kendall I think) instead of LHM. Supposedly it stays quite a bit thinner in cold weather, even though we don't really need that here. Might help in your case though. I'd also expect the damping on your car to become stiffer than normal due to the LHM becoming very thick, so it can't move as fast through the dampers in the spheres and the hydractive block
@dailyingxm4 ай бұрын
That is interesting to hear. I haven’t heard from the Kendall before, but as you said they have specially made hydraulic oil (HGB) for the northern environment. They claim that oil will freeze after -62. If that is something that I can get hold of that would be interesting to try. You are right, when temperature drops below -20 damping will be stiffer, but it gets better after few kilometers. It’s also funny that both my BX’s and XM’s speedo cables is making loud noise for first few kilometers :D

@dailyingxm4 ай бұрын
I, on the other hand, think that XMs among other hydraulic Citroens, are one of the winter cars that you can get. There is nothing like a hydropneumatic suspension when it comes to snowy roads. And in my case the Diravi makes it unbelievably joyful to drive in bad conditions. It shouldn't take insufferably long to rise if driven on a daily basis. That reminds me of a DS enthusiast priest who used to say that "when the hydraulics are building the pressure there is a good time to make prayer that the journey will be safe" and even though I'm not religious myself, I think the valuable lesson there is that be calm and don't be in a hurry. I bet that your old Activa is owned by someone at the Citroen club!
