What do world champion heavyweights Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey and Joshua Clottey all have in common? They were all raised in Bukom, Ghana.
The densely populated community is vastly inhabited by fishermen, but fishing is not their only export.
The city is renowned for having produced the most world boxing champions from Africa, and for the first time, British-Ghanaian film-maker Scilla Owusu explores and dissects how this Ga-Mashie community made boxing their cornerstone in a raw and riveting 75-minute documentary.
The documentary will give viewers a glimpse into the grungy boxing gyms, the old townships, and interview some of the greats to unpack what it takes to become a world champion.
Speaking of the inspiration behind the ambitious project, Owusu who has been featured on the BBC and in Forbes said: “After attending ‘This Is Ghana’ photography exhibition by Danny Wonders there was an image of a young boy wearing boxing gloves which caught my eye and attention. The photo was the catalyst which led me to start researching the boxing industry in Ghana. Communities like Jamestown & Bukom had me immersed in a deep yearning to chronicle the rich history of boxing through film,” says Scilla Owusu.

As someone who loves boxers and boxing documentaries, this was such a enjoyable watch for me!! Not only was it beautifully shot it is such an important archive of Ghanaian excellence. Anyway it’s such a shame that there hasn’t been the proper investment in the industry to support Ghana’s boxing talent but I’m glad you were there to capture their excellence. Also Azumah Nelson had me cracking up with his stories 😂 Excellent work Scilla 🔥🔥🔥

I hope every Ghanaian watching knows that in the US, when fight fans tune in and see a fighter is from Ghana...even if they're unfamiliar with the fighter....it's simply a given that the guy can fight, and win or lose will give it all. Your reputation here is massive.

This is an amazing watch to be honest. Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. Not to stretch it but just imagine this being shown in Bukom with some of these greats in attendance and a little Q and A for them. It's giving me so much chills because this is my hood. I see the talents and the struggles on a daily and really love how it was beautifully captured Scilla Owusu. Thank you for shining the light on Bukom boxers!

This is a great documentary and it really shows the intelligence and honorable character of the men who box for Ghana. The respect they show and the humility with which they express themsleves is so refreshing in this day and age of entightlement. That story from Azumah Nelson about how he got in started boxing is just beautiful, it speaks volumes about the man's character, his drive and the intelligence that would lead him to be the long reigning champion he was to become. Had the good fortune to watch the Quartey vs DeLaHoya fight while in Ghana as well...that was a close one but I had Quartey winning that one for sure.

An exceptional documentary. We've always known the issues boxing has had in Ghana but this is a fresh take on it and has been very revealing and informative. It shows that Ghana has to diversify funds when it comes to sports and boxing can bring Ghana back to the limelight as African champions and world champions. This can only happen by taking the initiative and this documentary is definitely in the right direction. Ayekoo!!! #bukomboxing

Outside of Ike Quartey and Azumah there were a lot of the newer guys I hadn't heard of. I liked the interviews with the non boxers because its interesting hearing enthusiasm and the work that goes in behind the scenes in Ghana from a sports perspective. Makes you question how much we investment is needed in parts of the country to encourage more youth into sporting paths outside of football

@@scillaowusu Thank you, basically, I am hoping you received funding and financial backing. The comments made by the boxers were RAW and they literally pulled no punches in their criticism. It could make it more difficult to produce another documentary like this as people will be reluctant to be held accountable. But you have to tell an honest story...that is journalistic integrity

Boxing equipment is not so expensive for a government. The government of Ghana or the representative in the national assembly can equip Gyms in bokum. Its been long long over due. Wickedness and negligence in Africa is high.
