The best book written about London is a book called I never knew that about London. I thought I knew a lot about London because I’ve walked every road and street But the book gives all the history. Great read. Also leadenhall. Got its name because the whole roof was made of lead. Nothing to do with leather. ❤❤❤❤

The original Watling Street is thought to have crossed the Thames at Westminster where the river was fordable. The Romans re-routed it through the City and over the first incarnation of London Bridge. Paved remains were found on Cheapside and the nearby Watling Street was just named as a nod to the historic roadway. It was never actually part of Watling Street.

A couple of my favs in this video (Watling & Dr Butlers Head). I mostly drink in The Ship at Talbot Ct as it's a cracking boozer and near my office in the Walkie Talkie.

Hoop and grapes in the Aldgate area is an actual pre great fire of London boozer still extant. Probably worth a visit just because of that.

Temple Bar actually spent quite some time lost and largely forgotten in the woods at Theobalds Park at Waltham Cross after it was removed from Fleet Street. It was acquired by the Temple Bar Trust in the late 80's, and permsiision was garnted for it to be relocated back in London in 2004 as part of the long-awaited remodelling of the atrocious 60's incarnation of Paternoster Square. Also, Horace Jones, who designed Leadenhall Market and Smithfields Market also designed the old Billingsgate market and, (with Charles Barry), Tower Bridge, all whilst holding the position of city architect. Btw, the big London leather market was over the river in Bermondsey, (and the fine buildings survive there), so Leadenhall more likely gets its name from a previous capacious mercheant's house which had, unusually for its time, a lead roof, and acquired th soubriquet that lives on..

Another interesting video. I must admit, and this is NOT an insult, that I only started watching these videos as I have been confined to barracks, or stuck in my study, with a stinking cold. Im not a natural resident of places like You Tube. Not wishing to spread germs I haven't been going to the pub, so rather absurdly I have been nursing a glass of wine watching videos of what I have been missing! Like GK, Shepherd Neame own some lovely pubs but like Mr Tweed I have never been able to enjoy or appreciate their beer much. But the point I was to make was that Harveys beer can be enjoyed in the Royal Oak in Tabard St near London Bridge. I'm sure that most people here will know that pub but in my experience the beer there, from Harveys, have travelled well from Lewes. The pub has changed a bit since the old guvnor Frank went, but IMHO it is still very good and worth a visit. It is a humble Victorian local, restored some 30 odd years ago, but done so very respectfully.

I'm sure you know about the Crosse Keys over the road from the Leadenhall Market. It's a Spoons, but still a great beer selection.

Brings back memories, worked on Fenchurch Street in the 90’s and recently on Leadenhall Street, frequented all those Pubs !

The Temple Bar actually stood in Fleet Street originally, but, as you said, it became too narrow for traffic. It was placed in its current position as part of the upgrade to Paternoster square and very good it looks too. Sorry to see the closure of Simpson's Tavern as it could always be relied in for a decent pint. The problem with many London pubs is that the younger generation tend to drink lager and the bar staff do not know how to manage proper ale. If it does not sell, then it becomes stale very quickly and takes on an almost metallic taste. Young's beers were fantastic in their pomp, but unfortunately their Wandsworth brewery closed and Charles Wells took over the Young's brand. The beers are now brewed in Bedfordshire now and do not resemble the original product at all. Very much enjoying your tours.

Hi, I share your enthusiasm for London pubs, and real ale Sir, on a personal note, my favourite pub crawls in London are Hampstead, Camden/Kentish Town (The Southampton Arms on Highgate Rd, is real ale heaven), and Islington. Keep up the good work, and supping! 😀

Until quite recently there were still rabbits hanging outside the butchers shops and you could buy cheese and game on Leadenhall market.

I have had many pints in the Cockpit over the years. Also The Rising Sun and Baynard Castle, although it’s been a while since I’ve visited.

You should have dropped into the George & Vulture, found it by accident the other day & stopped for a glass of wine. This pub is mentioned in the Pickwick Papers & one of the workers spoke at length about the history which was interesting. I found it a fascinating place & was glad I stopped.

A really interesting Vlog and in particular Watling Street which I was only vaguely aware of in terms of its length and trading significance. Temple Bar was moved twice as it was further rescued from an estate in Hertfordshire after its original location move, as you said due to becoming an obstruction. Certainly some interesting pubs for the next trip to town. I thought the last destination may have been the Blackfriars, which as pub is architecturally stunning inside.

Love these pub adventures & always appreciate your commentary on local history and architecture. May I ask, if you happen to remember, the brand of that first pint at the Lamb, and whether you liked it? Such a nice amber color, and hopefully made up for the dullness of the burger.

I enjoy the personal commentary, if I feel inspired I’ll get on my bike or shank’s pony and take a butchers myself. Actually, catch the train… but appreciate not everyone has that option.

Bit of a nostalgia fest for me, this! (retired City worker). There is still a Cross Keys pub, I believe it's an old bank, Now probably the Best Wetherspoons around. The beer is always good, I guess because they have such a huge turnover!

if i am not happy with a pint its going straight back and i ask for either a fresh one, a different pint or a refund, simple not trying to ruffle you feathers mate but do you ever ask for a fresh pint if the one you have is not up to standard? with the prices of drinks through the roof these days, especially central london you expect a pint to be above par

My mate fell down those stairs, seen on the right as you enter the Lamb Tavern. We were at a retirement ‘do’. Had to call paramedics, ambulance, etc. Ruined my whole fuckin’ evening.

You could have the camera pointing at your surroundings, rather than being on your face all the time. We would still hear the commentary just as well. But your style is a common failing in most such tours. Gets unbearable after a while.
