They're finally here! Over a year and a half after the City signed the deal with Velocity Truck Centers, the first new trucks are coming in. In order to comply with California's new law, SB1383, the City is rolling out hundreds of thousands of green organic waste carts, buying a new fleet of 98(?) trucks, and is filling 60 new driver positions.
As of writing this, they have at least 7 units already (401-407). In January these trucks will take on the first organics routes, and by August the city plans to have organics service at every home that receives city trash service.
Watch as the Rapid Rail is tested by San Diego's demanding routes, with construction debris (3:22), alleys (6:20) and cart lines throughout. Some feedback from the driver: the legal payload is just 10 tons, compared to 11.5 with an Amrep. Overall the Rapid Rail adds an hour and a half to his routes compared to an Amrep. Although the City was having lots of problems with Amrep (cylinders failing, poor customer service), they would have benefitted to look at other competitor's bodies more closely.
Filmed in San Ysidro and City Heights on December 8-9, 2022
Big thanks to the driver!

Makes sense they switched to rapid rails because they are really calm compared to the Amreps that would break bins constantly. Scorpions also worked I guess but looks like they went with these.

ZRs suck from what I've heard and probably wouldn't be good with organics. Hopefully Heil provides ESD with good customer service to make up for Amrep's deficiency

Glad to see that ESD experimented again with Rapid Rails. I do like Amreps, but it’s a nice break from them considering ESD’s fleet pre-2023 was all Amreps. I wish LABOS would do something like this, branch out, or at least try some different cabs other than their conformative Amrep with a Peterbilt 520 cab.

San Diego really said “How can we make the routes longer?” Cool to finally see some footage of the new ESD RRs, but i feel the city made a rushed decision on what to buy. Honestly thought they’d hop onto the Labrie or New Way bandwagon, we’ll see how well and how long these will last, can already tell packing will be an issue to keep with (especially when you have to tilt the body up on route to make more room). Nice video

I agree. They were dissatisfied with Amrep (for very valid reasons imo) and they were scrambling to find something they could get 100 of. They didn’t have time to buy 3 units at a time and test them out like they did with the Scorpions. The packing as you mentioned is a huge problem, I saw multiple drivers climbing up the hopper to clear jams, which has caused more than a few injuries since the rapid rail first came out. The autopack also mysteriously stopped working after the driver raised the body in that one shot.

My god you got all access! Alright first with the truck, it's great to see San Diego run something other than Amreps and growing up with Rapid Rails myself, I definitely won't mind seeing this coming down my street. Now on to practicality... I don't see a problem with broken lids anymore but I see a lot more carts starting to crack pre maturely if the pressure isn't set just right. I think cart spacing and trying not to hit a cart or bumper could be a major issue too especially in areas that don't have a lot of space on the street as it is like in older Claremont. Do you know why they didn't get them with tag axle like they did with the Amreps?

Wow, what a surprise! Never expected them to get rapid rails! I wonder if the rest of the their fleet they're buying will be these or if they'll try other bodies. I sure hope Heil treats them better than Amrep did. I like the body raise cause I totally forgot how the padel packer blade's cylinder set up looked like. I'm happy to see they got these with the right kind of grabbers and not those other ones. Look forward to seeing more of their incoming fleet! Adding more time to their routes is something I'm sure the drivers aren't happy about.

Thanks! It is a little unexpected lol. They’re getting 98 of these, so those drivers are in for a rough time for the next 10 years lol. It will be a while before they get other ASLs again. My prediction is that they will not be ordering these again after all the new units come in. I totally disagree on the grabbers, these aren’t big enough to handle the cans where a different style grabber would actually hug the cans instead of pinching them. thanks for checking it out!

Great video! It was neat to see the various shots you included, seeing inside the hopper, cab, the packer cylinders moving around beneath the body, and the oddball carts laying around. For a city known to provide lighting fast service it's unsettling to see this, but I'd say they're a good addition for the alleys where Amreps may be "too violent" in tight spaces. The truck doesn't move at a bad pace though. Overall the blue stripes look good with San Diego's basic design and the new Autocar brand plate, nice job filming this
@trashmonster26

IMO Amreps are better than these in alleys, just skip to 8:03 and you can see how much slower this arm is compared to how an Amrep would perform. Thanks for checking it out!

@@trashmonster26 true, but I was only basing that off service, not efficiency. I’ve seen some older videos where Amreps slammed lids against fences and such, whereas these don’t. However Amrep grippers sure are better for sliding between carts
