Here is the first unit of many to arrive within the next couple months! While this new and unique arm and body combination has unsurprisingly made its way into various fleets up in Canada, it has really only debuted as a demo truck here in the States. Despite albeit successful trials and demonstrations across the country over the past year or so, it certainly hasn't seemed like many haulers have strayed off the path of purchasing your typical Automizers and Helping Hands. This makes the City of Santa Monica the first municipality I know of in the United States to have an Alley Hand in service.
MME (Municipal Maintenance Equipment) is the primary Labrie equipment dealer and distributor in California, based out of Sacramento with other satellite locations throughout the state. They have seen a sharp increase in business over the last couple years as several Northern Californian haulers have purchased large orders of Labrie/Leach/Wittke, though it has stayed relatively quiet in the southern part of the state. That is slowly changing however, obviously with Santa Monica's order but also with other cities such as Oxnard and L.A, who have demoed their equipment and seem to be rather fond of something that isn't a clanky Amrep. At Harrison, we had the pleasure of welcoming the guys from MME to demo their Alley Hand with us back in July for a couple days. After testing it on a variety of routes, I had very few complaints aside from easy cosmetic fixes.
Lalo, the driver in this video also had plenty of good things to say about his new truck. One of his favorite new features is the extensive 12 foot reach, a luxury he's never had on the other Scorpions and Curbtenders in the city's fleet. You'll see a couple clips in the video where he's demonstrating the reach for me. Another thing he appreciates is the massive 6 cubic yard hopper, which undoubtedly helps for the heavy setouts he sees on his Tuesday yard waste route (i.e. last clip).
As you may also notice, the unique Labrie grabbers are far more gentle on carts, a sharp contrast from the Scorpion pinchers of death that seem to have caused the death of several Rotos and Rehrigs in the city over the years. On the other hand, this gentleness can be a setback when it comes to emptying heavy yard waste carts, since not all the material will always fall out in one dump. With no decent way to shake carts as you would with an Amrep or Rapid Rail, it's not uncommon to leave a few carts half full throughout the route. Though not seen in this video, both Lalo and I found this drawback to be a little frustrating in our separate experiences of running the Alley Hand.
It was also neat filming my first Battle Motors chassis. Santa Monica has usually been one of the only haulers in the Los Angeles area loyal to Crane Carrier for most of their fleet, so these may be the only Battle trucks in the area for a little while.
Huge thanks to Saul from MME for keeping me updated on the arrival of these trucks, and to the star of the show Eduardo.

Very nice video dude! I think we can all count on Santa Monica when it comes down to truck diversity. Whether it’s Amrep, curbtender, scorpion, Heil, and now this. Like you, I’m pleased that somebody decided to give the alley hand a try. The arms reach is definitely something a city like Santa Monica needs. Would love to see another video of this on 300s or holiday trash as well, maybe that’s something we can work out when it comes to that time. Great find Eli!

Thanks man! Out of most haulers in the LA area, they have certainly been one of the more diverse fleets over the years in terms of their residential fleet. This being no exception. They could really get the ball rolling with Labrie in the greater LA area. I’m very interested to see how one of these does on 300s, and I think they should have enough in by the holiday this year to run one of these on such a route. I have a feeling the 6 yd hopper will outperform everything else with the capacity it can take. Appreciate the comment!

So cool to see a SoCal city actually buying Labrie! Looks like it is working out well for them. Bet the drivers will be glad they no longer will have to spend minutes packing oversized cardboard residents place into 300s when these eventually make their way onto other streams. Do you know how many units Santa Monica got? Looking forward to seeing more videos of these.

Thank you! Labrie’s massive hopper is almost built for overflowing 300s, being that its one of the biggest side loader hoppers in the industry. Along with the zero radius lift, it’s a very ideal truck for Santa Monica’s alleys. I believe they got somewhere around a dozen, maybe a few less. Supposedly they are replacing their entire residential fleet over the next year or so with these.

Very cool combo indeed, but I can't help and think about the ZR when I see the arm, the reach really impressive seeing it on video, I forget if the ZR arm can reach that far too...I like all the massive setouts you caught it on. Can't wait to see more.

They are essentially one in the same, and as you mentioned Labrie undoubtedly sets themselves apart from McNeilus with that incredible reach. Those were only a few of the lines that get set out on that route, and this truck was able to keep up remarkably well. Thanks for commenting!

I suspect the lack of ability to "slam" the bins stems from labrie being wary of the original pendpac's and even the early ZR's susceptibility to cracking. though I know with labries they can be capable of some wicked slamming as they age so we'll see how the arm withstands the test of time I always liked labrie so I really hope for this truck to succeed. I's like to see this truck eventually on a recycling or organics route with extra cardboard and tree setouts. one of the major drawbacks I hear of the ZR is that drivers can't grab extra setouts because the grabbers won't open due to the hopper cover. hopefully we'll see this eventually, though I'm also wary of these grabbers basically having no sensor to detect how far it can open under certain circumstances, as I've seen a demo video where the grabbers slam into the ladder. overall vast improvement over the ZR design and certainly over the original pendpac design

You’re probably onto something with that first theory, thought it could also be fresh hydraulics that have been tuned to be on the gentler side. The Right Hand arms, especially older ones, are definitely slammers. So yes, it could be a feature that comes with age. As for the grabbers, funny you mentioned what you did and Labrie does have a sensor for exactly that. One of this driver’s biggest complaints was that he couldn’t double dump carts (something he could easily do with his old Scorpion). The reason for this is that the grabbers won’t lift the cart more than a foot or two if they are sensed to be opened beyond a certain point… even if they have grabbed onto a cart…to prevent exactly what you said from happening. Though I’m sure that with 300 grabbers, you could likely double dump a couple 90s, however the 300 grabbers are so large they don’t contact the stowing censor. This means that you have to drive with them stowed up like an Amrep when you drive over 25mph, since the whisker sensors at the base require the grabbers to touch it if you go over that speed.

Pendulum packers definitely hold their spot in the industry for certain applications. This model is essentially a solution to the cart swing out that you see on Labries Right Hand and Helping Hand arms. Better for alleys, which Santa Monica is full of. Thanks for the comment!

The bigger hopper will definitely help out on busy routes, what about the 300s, how would that work. The Scorpion is out of production, i take it, but this truck looks really good for the city, hopefully they can upscale on truck sizes and make it work.

Wow, I would've expected SaMo to buy more scorpions, but its surprising they would buy a Alley Hand. Love how the truck can reach from far distances for some cans. Looks real cool to me. Overall amazing video, and where was this filmed?

@socalgarbagetrucks2585 8 ай бұрын
Being that Scorpions are no longer being made, this is their solution to phasing out that part of their fleet. This will be their first widely used “zero radius” truck they’ve purchased which will be ideal for their many tight alleys. And I guess Labrie was able to successfully convince them! The reach very useful especially in cul de sacs. This was filmed on the Tuesday route near the border with West LA.
