+Carmen Bernardo You have not seen Gandhi from Civ 1. Montezuma, Napoleon or Alexander aren't even close. Gandhi would stomp the entire world like insects once he gained democracy. This is all because of a bug in the coding, originally intended to make him the most peaceful man in Civ games, but turns him into a man who bathes in blood and nukes everyone he sees.

Carmen Bernardo In my case I began playing with Civ 5 actually. Two years ago I heard how Civ 4 was far ahead of Civ 5, so I bought and played that, and then bought Civ 3 just out of curiosity. Now I am enjoying all 3 games. :) And it was when I was playing Civ 3 that I read how Gandhi and AI was in Civ 2 and Civ 1. Civ 1 indeed doesn't work on modern PCs, and Civ 2 barely works as well.

What happened was in Civ 1 Gandhi's aggression was set to 1, to reflect his real world persona, however when he adopted democracy which lowered a ai leader's aggression by 2, negative numbers were not recognized by the game code, so it looped back to 255, the max possible, which made him insanely aggressive and rush nukes, then use them at the slightest provocation. He has been a nuke happy peace lover ever since.

They got such a kick out of a pacifist nuking people, that they made his agendas "Peace loving" and "Nuke Happy" in Civ 6. It's traditional now.

Yes it was a design mistake in Civ1 that made him hyper agressive and thus also happy to throw nukes like candy. Civ2 (which was Civ1 with slightly better UI) actually tried to fix it but players then modded it back and thus the Devs actually put it back in in a patch. And from there on Gandhi the Warmongering Nuker became tradition. Sometimes from the get go, sometimes only after he actually got his hands on nukes and now in Civ6 with two conflicting Agendas (never saw a game where his "hidden" Agenda didn't turn out to be: I love nuclear bombs."). At least in Cvi6 he can't activley start wars. But he can be invited to wars. And somehow he is quite easy to persuade :D

DaralenManta It comes from a mistake in either Civ 1 or Civ 2 (I forget). Leaders' personalities are controlled by traits that are given a score from 0 - 10. Propensity to use nukes is one of those traits. Anyhoo - some dev accidentally set Gandhi's to 10 with hilarious results. The community reacted favourably and it's just kind of been a Civ tradition ever since

Gandhi's aggression in an early game was set to 1, the lowest possible. Every civilization loses 2 aggression when entering democracy, and in Ghandhi's case, that means it rolling over to 65535.

+DaralenManta Actually it is from Civ 1. Gandhi was made the most peaceful character in that game, having attack threshold of only 1 (when other players had as high as 15 I recall). But when Gandhi adopted democracy, the old code of the game went bonkers. Democracy reduces attack threshold by 1. But instead of going to 0 attack threshold, it reset and went all the way to 255 (the highest possible). Thus, because of this bug, the Gandhi of 255 attack threshold turned into a madman psychopath who ate human flesh for dinner and bathed in human blood. This bug became a classic. They fixed this with Civ 2, but as a tribute to the original classic bug, they retained it in some form. So Gandhi is still the most peaceful character in any Civilization game, but if you anger him even slightly he goes crazy and nukes everyone out of existence.
