thank you a lot. when I was younger I loved to write short fiction, then stopped through my teen years after learning about George RR Martins, A song of ice and fire through the tv show Game of thrones it inspired me to start writing fiction again. An epic fiction I'm currently stuck on the currency and pay of certain classes and job wages this has helped a lot.

Actually they will, calculating through bread prices the gross income of a single peasant family(5 people or so) would be 5 gold dragons/year. Of course all of most of that remains in the form of food they eat themselves, but still.
@MinMinn192
@MinMinn192 7 жыл бұрын
But I assume that what's implied here is that peasants never come close to owning a single Gold Dragon worth of other possessions, like clothing, beds and who knows what the hell else. It's kinda pointless to include food in a calculation like that because the food doesn't keep around like other commodities.

That's something that happens with a bottom up currency system. I think a lot of those inbetweens are based on common items such as bread could be a half groat. A horse could perhaps cost a moon.

What would happen if a female head of a house married a male head of another house? Would it mean that their 2 houses would somehow merge? I'm thinking especially in Dorne, lets say Jynessa Blackmont, heir to House Blackmont married Edric Dayne, Lord of Starfall and had a child together - would that child inherit both titles and somehow a some what new House would be formed?
@DemonicPanda65

+Petter Söderberg In Dorne? My thinking is that they would inherit the most powerful house first, or the eldest would choose and the second child would get what’s left.
@alexandertsamourlidis646

The land of the smaller house would be absorbed into the bigger one. Such an example is the Hornwood dispute in the North. Lady Hornwood, a widow of old age, was courted by many lords, most prominently Wyman Manderly, who hoped to marry her to absorb the lands of Hornwood into their own. Note that Lady Hornwood at that time is the sole Lady of the Hornwood lands and therefore they won't pass to anyone but her. In Dorne, while counterintuitive, the laws would apply the same way; as the bigger house would be the most dominant regardless of gender of lord/lady

I've seen a few guesstimates here and there and most people point at Golden Dragons being the rough equivalent of $1500 or so. Another good reference is 1GD = 1 Pound Sterling (late 14th century) which also fits well. What astonishes me are two things. 1. Robert's tourney of the hand. The winner would win 40k dragons, rougly 60 MILLION DOLLARS. Even for all of westeros that is madness, consider the worth of all of the material wealth in Westeros today is mostly attached to agriculture and the trade of, mostly, food. The runner up would make half that money, as well as the winner of the mele, and 10k GD to the best archer (good old Guy of the Brotherhood who drank and fucked through 15 million USD in weeks). The total is 135.000.000 USD, for a realm already 9.000.000.000 USD in debt. Let that sink in. 2. Maegor the Cruel's war on the Faith. The reward was 1GD for the head of a Warrior's Son (Knight sworn to the Faith Militant) and 1 Silver Stag for the scalp of a Poor Fellow (today known as sparrows). That means a holy knight is worth 1500 USD (fair bounty for war time) but it also means a soldier that kills one holy thug gets paid the rough equivalent of 7 dollars. I guess that's why the called him "the cruel".

I think it's agnatic primogeniture succession. A son comes before an uncle.
@arng111
@arng111 6 жыл бұрын
Energetic Wave Yes, even if the King or Lord had two sons. The oldest son would be set to inherit the title, and if he had a son, his son would be next in the line of succession. Even if the oldest son dies when his boy is just a baby, the title would go to the baby, rather than the uncle. The uncle would probably just take care of things until the boy is old enough (or kill him, to avoid such a dispute).

Great vid as usual. Is it the Iron Bank exclusively that lends money throughout the known world? I know the Lannister house lends money as well but they in turn owe large sums to the Iron Bank. Does the Iron Bank simply hedge their bets on how world events will play out or do they have a more direct intent on shaping world events.
@CivilizationEx
@CivilizationEx 9 жыл бұрын
PB J I don't think it is exclusive, but the Iron Bank is by far the largest bank in the free cities (larger than the others combined), so when borrowing for a nation (like Kings and Princes would) they must need huge sums of money that only a place like the Iron Bank could provide. They are also known to support coups and usurpers when rulers fail to pay their debts. With the new rulers paying back the original loan plus interest. I assume that aid is financial only, but who knows, the details of how their bank works are secret, so maybe they hire faceless assassins or sellswords and have a hand in changing governments directly. But if that's the case I don't think it hasn't been revealed yet.

CivilizationEx You know, is it possible that Littlefinger's been collaborating with the Iron Bank this entire time? What if their ultimate endgame was not to put a specific person on the Iron Throne, but to hold the Iron Throne for ransom until the Seven Kingdoms finally paid its long overdue debt? (Even though I'm sure that I'm just voicing an unfounded hunch; I need to express it while I still remember) Anyway, Littlefinger's Braavosi heritage would seem to be a small hint to that direction, right?
@CivilizationEx
@CivilizationEx 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Shan I don't know if they were working together, but Littlefinger is definitely working a money angle. He was Master of Coin for years, and I personally do not believe King Robert put the Kingdom in that much debt. I think Littlefinger cause the kingdom to bleed coin on purpose, to put them in debt and destabilize the Kingdom. He may be working with the Braavosi Bank, but that I'm not sure about. His grandfather was from Braavos, I don't know if he has any direct connection there any more.
@topnotchshinobi
@topnotchshinobi 9 жыл бұрын
CivilizationEx After some even more thought on the topic of Littlefinger, I realized that there is a parallel between his "Baelish" surname and the legend of "Bael the Bard." Like Littlefinger, Bael too, had also crossed paths with a Brandon Stark. Both men eagerly desired the woman of their dreams; Littlefinger wanted Catelyn Tully, and Bael wanted Brandon's yet-to-be-named virgin daughter (referred to by Bael as "Winterfell's most beautiful flower"), the difference being that Bael succeeded and Littlefinger failed. I don't know if Littlefinger is aware of the parallel himself, but his life story so far seems to be an attempt to follow in Bael's footsteps. Littlefinger currently has Sansa under his guardianship, having his own version of "Winterfell's most beautiful flower" within his grasp.

@heathenpride7931

It seems normal (more like expected) when the current ruler or heir is female. This is how houses like those in Dorn have stayed in power despite numerous female heirs. Additionally, the bastard son of the daughter-and only child- of a stark king was legitimized and became a Stark. The daughter of Lann the Clever also had a matrilineal marriage with a unnamed Andal prince/King (I can't remember which it was) and now all Lannisters claim dissent from Lann through the female line. So in Westeros at least I'm pretty sure it's at least not unheard of.
@joekerr9197
@joekerr9197 8 жыл бұрын
Yes ofc. For example in the 'Clash of Kings' (2nd book) there is a discussion in Winterfell about Hornwood widow whose son and husband died so there is no heir. One of the possible solutions was a 2nd or 3rd son from House Glover (not sure about this though, but some noble house is indeed mentioned) being willing to marry her and take up the Hornwood name. Also the current Lannisters are in fact descendants of the original Lannisters only through female line...when Gerold III Lannister (who was King of the Rock) died without male issue there was a council who decided to crown Joffrey Lydden, husband of Gerold's daugther...he took up the Lannister name of his wife and was known as Joffrey Lannister. So basically the current Lannisters are in fact a cadet branch of House Lydden, vassals to Lannisters.
@mikesmith8656
@mikesmith8656 7 жыл бұрын
VintageLJ Usually if a male heir isn't apparent. The Manderlys will likely have that marriage with Wyman's eldest granddaughter. Also, Tywin wanted Cersei to marry Willas (or Loras in show) and have sons to extend his line.

But in an absolutist monarchy like the Seven Kingdoms, the king's word IS the law. One could say that, as soon as Viserys determined that Rhaenyra was to be his heir, whatever decision the Great Council of 101 had was immediately nulified. In a system like the one in Westeros, the law of the land is whatever the monarch says is the law of the land (we see that in the show when Tommen prohibits the Trial by Combat), so, if Viserys said that Rhaenyra was to be Queen after him, that was the word of the king and that should have been the end of the matter.

Sir loves you videos and they are best, but the part of about Dance of Dragons with the law with succession it was not in stone yet during reign of King Viserys I, but the council was always pressing King Viserys I about it when his second wife had sons, but he said no my eldest daughter heir and that it. Prince Aegon stolen the crown from Princess Rhaenyra.

Sophia Wilson Actually the First Great Council decided that women could not inherit before men. That was in 101 AC, before the Reign of Viserys I. Viserys violated law and tradition by keeping Rhaenyra before Aegon.

There is still something about the line of succession I don't completely understand. Typically it goes from eldest to youngest simple enough. But what happens when a lord or king has multiple wives is it still oldest to youngest among all the children or is it oldest to youngest from wife #1 then wife #2 and so on?
@MrConstantine02
@MrConstantine02 7 жыл бұрын
It's always oldest to youngest, no matter how many wives. No matter if he has 2 sons with wife #1, or one son with wife #1 and one son with wife #2.
@arng111
@arng111 6 жыл бұрын
If wife #1 had two daughters, and wife #2 had a daughter and then a son, the son, despite being the youngest of all the children, and being born to the second wife, would inherit the title. Now, if this guy got married again, and had two sons with wife #3, the line of succession would still follow through the line of the son of wife #2. The two sons of wife #3 can be adults, but as soon as the son of wife #2 has a baby boy, all the other siblings, male and female, despite being adults by this point, are no longer in the line of succession, even if the son of wife #2 dies before he officially inherits the title of Lord or King. The baby boy is still next in line. Someone would just take his place until he is deemed old enough to accept the title and responsibilities. Only if there are no male direct descendedants of the Lord or King would a direct female descendant inherit the title, in which case it would be the oldest daughter (or granddaughter, assuming everyone but a couple of granddaughters are dead). Now, say a king had two sons and one daughter. The firstborn son is in the line of succession, and he has a son. The son is next in the line of succession. Say the whole family dies except the king's daughter and the king's grandson, who was son of the crown Prince. The title would rightfully go to the grandson, even though the daughter is closer to the King in the direct line of descent. 1) he was in the line of succession. 2) He's still a direct descendant, and legally, the title always goes to a male heir before a female heir. So, it isn't always oldest to youngest. Gender is more important than age when it comes to inheritance of lands and titles. Age only comes into account between sons, or if there are no sons, between daughters. And as soon as the oldest son (or daughter if there are no sons) starts having children, the line of succession is set. The only case I am unsure of is what would happen if the eldest son, who is in the line of succession, has daughters, but dies before he has a son. Assuming he has brothers, would the title go to the next oldest brother, or would it go to his oldest daughter?

Usually a council is held and the crown is offered to the nearest uncle, nephew or cousin. If there is absolutely no one in the immediate bloodline, you go back to the realms closest blood ties. For example Robert Baratheon technically did have a claim to the Iron Throne because his grandmother was a Targaryen. So is all the Targaryen had been wiped out by something else, the realm may have gone to the Baratheons for a new king anyway because of their blood ties to the monarchy. Or else it may have gone to another family with close ties like the Velaryons or Celtigars.

Partially. You can actually find influences from several historical periods throughout books. For example the current situation between the North and the Southern kingdoms is somewhat reflective of the relations between England and Scotland. The relations between Iron Isles and the North, reflective of Scotland proper relations with the Viking rulers and Kingdom/Lordship of the Isles, etc. The entire storyline during "Clash of Kings" especially being reflection and obviously inspired by the "Wars of the Roses", there are vague influences from other periods and historical events from Medieval Europe. It's a mish-mash of influences from various periods and events throughout history into one...plus dragons and dire wolves and so on.

Yes, although The Reach is more like France (or Plantagenat England) than any of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms, and Dorne is more like Spain. Apart from that though, I'd say it's very similar; the Andals themselves being like the Anglo-Saxons. The Seven Kingdoms existed even before the Targaryen (Norman) Conquest. Where it differentiates here is that the Heptarchy was Anglo-Saxon Period specific, whereas after the Targaryen Conquest the Seven Kingdoms still existed. England was only a Heptarchy for a period during the Anglo-Saxon period.

@CivilizationEx 8 жыл бұрын
A female can't, technically, the Council of 101 AC decided that a the throne could not pass to a woman or the descendant of a woman, although King Viserys I ignored that, it ended up causing a civil war and in the end, the his daughter was not considered a proper ruler of throne
@arng111
@arng111 6 жыл бұрын
As long as there is a male heir, a female can't inherit (legally speaking). If it was between a King's grandson and the King's daughter, it'd go to the grandson. Especially if the grandson was born to the oldest son. Even after the oldest son's death, his son would still be in the line if succession over the King's daughter. In fact, this grandson would even be in the line of succession over his uncles if he had any.

The first male relative.. so it would be Kevan Lannister. But since he is killed in ADOD.. Lancel. But since he is part of the faith millitant, he most likely won't. Offcourse Tommen is a bastard so the throne would go to Stannis. But his fate is uncertain too. In Kingslanding it would be either Cersei or Queen Maergery since the marriage is consumated. Then again, both are detained in some way. So nothing is really certain. Chaos reigns in Westeros.

If that happens (it already did in the show) then the throne is up for grabs. In fact the current situation with Cersei proclaiming herself as Queen regnant is somewhat reflective of the historical events that happened in early-mid 12th century England when the English kings of House of Normandy died off in male line and there was a great civil war between Matilda, daughter of Henry I (and his only legitimate child at the time of his death) and Stephen of Blois, a grandson of William the Conqueror. The issue was resolved with Stephen becoming the King of England for life, but Matilda's children with Geoffrey Plantagenet inheriting the crown after Stephen. That entire period of about 20 years was a period of great instability.
