Man i just cant get it why youre so hyped about these civivis. Cause theyre sending em your way free of charge for testing? Is that it? Its ganzo all the way with the same not integrated liners (so what if they painted it brass, they are still the same stainless steel). 9crsomeshitmov and its 50 bucks. You can get broken skull for 60 bucks on amazon with powder ctsxhp, its normal brand, awesome lock, 4 inch blade and lightweight with no liners at all and the same overall toughness. Seriously???

I absolutely love 9cr18mov It's a very balanced steel, good corrosion resistance, good edge retention and though. Unfortunately the knives communities nowadays are plagued by marketing that is promoting insanely expensive steels focusing only on the hardness and not about specs equilibrium.

It is soft compared with other steels, you have to resharpen it very often, it is tough and stain resistant it's definitely made for service work and beating on, it will take a decent edge quickly but lose it just as fast, that's what some people are saying and that's the truth of it, it's nothing to get butt hurt about, different steels for different things right? you don't see them using butter knife Steel in leaf springs for cars etc etc

9cr18mov is basically 440B and similar to 440C. its still a very basic budget steel. the thing that makes it decent is WE knives heat treat them to 59-60hrc AND use good geometry. which helps alot more than the other budget chinese knives that heat treat there knives horribly bad and around 57-58hrc with bad geometry.

9cr18mov is much better than 440B as knife steel, and actually although cheaper than newer super-steel is the high end of Chinese stainless steels. The composition is different than 440B; 9cr18mov contains vanadium and more molybdenum that alter the grain formations , plus nickel that add toughness, also the carbon amount on 440B most of the time is around 0.75\0.80, in 9cr18mov is almost always around 0.90\0.95. 9Cr18Mov, and is harder than both 440B and 440C. The problem is that most budget Chinese knives have totally fake specs and since isn't easy to determine the steel grade used they could sell you whatever crappy steel, claiming that is 9cr18mov (the Chinese high end) when really It isn't.
@samr4338
@samr4338 5 жыл бұрын
incorrect. 9cr18 isn't comparable to 440B nor 440C. 9cr18 has nickle, more chrome, more molybdenum and about 1% carbon. It's too chemically different than the 440s to being compared to them. They are different steels.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e7WhfrNqybHPnpc.html Not apples to apples, but 200 cuts vs 55? Even taking variables in medium and edge geometry, that’s much better performance from the 9cr. I’m hearing anecdotally similar performance to VG-10 and a little less retention than D2, but more stainless than D2. I like it.

Watching this video, all I could think of is a paraphrased quote from Kershaw's head of marketing to the effect of not being able to tell a performance difference from any of the Chinese "alphabet soup" (3CR13, 7CR17, 8CR13MOV,, 9CR18MOV) because of a lack of proper heat treat or tolerances in Chinese manufacturing. Fast forward a couple years or so and here's WE Knives and their new "budget"/"utility" brand to completely and utterly prove him wrong.

@TheScotchaholic 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelvoorhees5978 Thanks for the reminder. Mastodon in 9cr and the Cogent in 14c both arrived hair shaving sharp, with excellent fit and finish and smooth flipper actions - the Cogent flips more quickly since it has caged ceramic ball bearings, a lighter blade and solid blade detent that favors closing. The Mastodon uses bronze washers for easier maintenance and is blade heavy for this cleaver style, therefore a bit slower - but improved with a little lubricant at the washers/pivot and some opening and closing - way better. This blade is meant for dirtier jobs since it uses washers for easier cleaning, and since it's blade heavy, it's naturally a bit slower in opening, but still smooth. As far as performance of both, the Mastodon's full flat grind makes it an excellent slicer for food (great for Cracker Barrel cheese blocks), especially with the tip (not a hard use tip) for precision cuts, and great at cardboard breakdown. The 9cr held up nicely for food and just needed some 5-8 stropes on each side with my extra fine diamond duo fold sharpener to bring it back to hair shaving sharp, after a week of food prep (the cutting board dulled the edge more than the food). The cardboard, tape, some nylon twine, and pizza boxes stopped the shaving edge in about the fourth day of moderate use, and stroped back hair sharp with 10-12 each side. Civivi's 9cr heat treatment is definitely better than other 9crs on the market and on par (from my experience) with equally well heat treated AUS8A/154cm/440c/ - the edge/blade geometry of the Mastodon also helps. The stonewashed finish hides wear very well, unlike prettier grinds that quickly shows surface wear/scratches. As far as the high flat grind Cogent goes, it's been edc'd and used very lightly for a few cardboard and thick USPS grey mailing envelopes (the tip isn't a hard use tip either) , and has hasn't needed sharpening so far. The black stonewashed finish is unaffected with it's light use. As for food, it slices well enough, but the blade isn't long enough imo, and I don't want to gunk up the bearings - I prefer the Mastodon for the kitchen/messier tasks. Both are great slicers (Mastodon is the winner if I had to choose), and I definitely used the Mastodon heavily, since it's larger handle and blade size just screams "slice and dice - all day, everyday." The Mastodon is the shirt pocket frequent user at home, while the Cogent is the outside EDC.

" VG WHAT " That's a Great result. It's what I've been saying all along. BETTER than Spyderco's VG10 and it seams everyone else's too . For $42 US , the fit and finish and edge retention , makes these knives "UNBEATABLE" This is going to open a lot of people's eye's. I bought all 3 models , all excellent. The funny thing is Civivi is coming out with 2 new models with titanium clips and "VG10" for $68 US . "WHY" , Use the 9cr and charge $55 , you may have screwed yourself on that.
@timbo4374
@timbo4374 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. At the lower price, and the 9cr, they have the competition beat (Kizer Tangram for instance) but at the higher price and VG10, they are maybe as good as , but not better than Kizer Vanguard..they loose their edge over the competition. On top of that, the majority of knives sold in the world, are to the average guy on the street, who will not notice the difference in quality, but WILL notice the difference in price. If you think I am wrong..ask Kershaw. They selll way more, by a ton, of kershaws than they do ZT's. Most knife sales are not to us knife guys, but to average everyday guys and gals, who will never even consider paying 70 bucks for a knife they use to cut a few boxes, open a package here and there, and maybe cut up an apple for lunch. The very idea of paying 75, 100, or God forbid, 200, for a pocket knife is absurd to them.

Your absolutely right. For all the crap the steel gets, probably deserved, I have found some of the brands that use it to be wickedly sharp and decent blades.

Hello. May I ask what is your opinion on Damascus steel? Are they different? (probably) Which is good which is great? And how can we compare. Thank you millions in advance Ps I have a custom knife from a local maker in dam steel which I don’t like. So I didn’t buy the ultimate Lionsteel Rok in damascus, but I got the one in m390.

This sort of data is why I am no longer enamored with the latest super steels.. A well designed blade that is properly heat treated and competently sharpened can last for years without breaking the bank.

So many people and knife reviewers trash 9cr18mov. Why is this?
@King88_8

Many trash anything that is not "super steel" or just simply made in China. I can guarantee you, that most "super steel" knife owners aren't knife users

@@ckurtz1013 Well you're not completely wrong. When they first hit the market they were using 9cr18mov. The they released.a few with vg-10. The newer models are using D2. But prices are steadily increasing. I think they had a nice market niche with the prices on their 9cr18mov. Moving from $42 to $70‐$80. Is pushing the boundary of budget.

@@abc456f THey were introduced at the Blade Show in 2018, where many of their knives did have 9Cr18MoV blades, but by the time they were actually available through my distributor, there was only 1 still offered in 9Cr18MoV. All the rest were either VG10 or D2, and according the people I spoke with at this years Blade Show they have no plans to make any more in 9Cr18MoV.. As for price, the cheapest one I've ever been able to get had an MSRP of just over $50.00, so I don 't really see them as raising prices all that much. Instead I see people who were fortunate enough to get some pre-official release stock selling them at extremely low margines to get the brand known. Considering they've only been officially selling knives here in the States for just 13 months now, I think they're doing extremely well to be so well known.

I only like flippers. I've tried thumbstuds and the Spidey hole and have actually cut myself. Obviously it works fine for a ton of people, but I say instinctively, it's poor form to open a knife by flipping your thumb towards the opening cutting edge.
