CK3: The Counties & Duchies with the Most Holdings (for Growing Tall) - Crusader Kings 3

Here are some places to target playing 'tall' (with the stewardship & perks for that many holdings). This is only based on holdings - we need to take another deeper look based on buildings and special slots as well. Only 1 county (in Croatia) has eight holdings, 5 have seven, and there are a whopping 72 with six holdings. For duchies: Bohemia has 3 six-holding counties, while several have 2, most of them near the Caspian Sea and Iraq.
It's interesting how many of these are neighbors. The 8 and a 7 are practically touching in Croatia. Some of the ones sandwiched between the Byzantine Empire, Arabian Peninsula, and Caspian Sea are close to each other too.

I think more attention should be given to special buildings, especially mines. controlling a rich mine can finance your entire game, It's easy to own all three mines in Mali at once (though you have to be carefull about what you build where when you feudalize them) in addition, Sjæland in Denmark deserves some extra attention because all it's holdings are coastal, meaning you could build a ton of tradeports and get more development there than anywhere else.

Excellent video, Bizzy. One factor you don't mention, is the disproportionate value of counties-duchies with farmland in them; the special buildings for levies and income are superb and they have excellent development growth. The duchies of Kiev, Valois, Orleans, Visegrad, and Bohemia are all exceptional in this regard (looking just at Europe). Hungary is really stacked with good duchies in CK3. Quite a departure from the previous installment.

I got a little excited about making this video. I edited the description to note we need to take a deeper dive into buildings and specials. I'm finally seeing this play out in my Sibling Rivalry after forming the empire and continuing on to Reconquista.

In moste videos about the best county to start in, the county with mines are often left out. I forget the county name but 2 of the barony with mines are Goslar near Rammelsberg in the HRE and barony of ellur in india. I tried the county with mines i found that money was alway plentiful. These 2 mines gives you 5 gold pr month and 20% to holding tax and 10% monthly development. can be upgarded to max 14 gold pr month 35% to holding tax and 25% to monthly development.This allowd me to get max man at arms early on as well as the cash to hire more troops. You can also upgarde your holding to max very early on. There are other mines county beside those 2 but they need to be buildt. Like the mines in mail can not be buildt until you adopt feudal. Sweden in county of dal and the barony of Falene has copper mines that gives less gold but more to levy size.

Yep, I started in Munda 867 as a baby, ironman mode. By 1150 I have over 2000 living dynasty members, 52 cadet houses, rule all of India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Arabia, Tibet. Reformed Buddhist religion called Jungle Fever, makes everyone feast endlessly, have ridiculous amounts of kids, and hold mystical communion every 5 years. From Bodh Gaya, my dynasty members hold all renown generating sites in the empire. Feudally, I can field 98k levies and 32 knights, all 25+ prowess (graceful aging and gender equality ftw). Basically I'm waiting to see if Gengis Khan wants to come out and play. Otherwise, the game's pretty much broken. Lol Also, considering moving my capital to Baghdad. 7 holdings I can directly hold with floodplains. That's 25+ knights and 10k+ levies from just one county alone.

The number of counties doesn't really matter.. What matters more is if its coastal or not. Its terrain (farmlands or floodplains) Duchy of Capua with just two counties of three baronies is an ideal place for playing tall. Napoli is farmlands while Capua being next to Rome gets insane neighbour bonus. Further the Republican legacy tradition (Latin heritage tradition) gives you more money from cities Here are my picks (Duchies) Capua - location Manding - mines Madurai - farmlands & maritime mercantilism Cholamandalam - farmlands, special building and maritime mercantilism Some more are there but I have never been interested in going tall

I don't think a province with many building slots is the best choice because buying all slots is very expensive and a long process .Moreover, you just give them to lower vassals anyway to take 20% income of them. it better to have provinces in good terrain like farmland or flooded land where you can buy some good special economic buildings or in duchy with special building where you dont need to create duchy title to buy duchy building like Rome, Thrake. In my opinion, the best place is bohemiha and second is makura .

You're right. Many of those counties are on desert and have very low development. Good places are the Floodplains of the Nile Delta (Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, etc.), Constantinople, Cordoba, Toledo and Rome (which all have high dev, farmlands and special buildings except Toledo), the vast floodplains and farmlands of India, the floodplains of Mesopotamia, especially Baghdad (floodplains, high dev and special building). Mecca and Medina are also very good for Muslims (high dev, Holy Mosques as special buildings giving you dev growth and a lot of taxes and piety). I don't know all places, so I probably missed some but these are the good ones I think of.
@DoubleBizzy
@DoubleBizzy 3 жыл бұрын
That very well could be the case. Basically, I came from the angle of "confederate partition splits all your holdings, so how could you grow tall in a single county or duchy?" Buildings are good, but they are built in holdings, so I approached from the aspect of where you could have the most holdings.

@@DoubleBizzy i played a game in bohemia where I built 3 castles in prague. The good thing about this is that revoking baronies is fast and easy and so before death you can let your kids divide it all. The main heir inherits 4 castles for 1 county. Or maybe your next heir was not a steward but a learner because that's your plan. Just give the baronies to lower nobles and keep all your counties, your next heir can retake the baronies. Counties with a lot of holdings adds extra flexibility to the game. Lastly, and as a reference: if at 867 you start developing your capital as greater poland, by 950ish your county will be the most developed county in the world, and it spills so the surrounding counties will have high values too so you can definetly catch up in those terms as well.

I want a small, compact, highly developed area, have my own religion and be the religious leader (paragon?). Then convert allies to my religion. I also want to be a culture head and (with high average development of the only counties of that culture) and increase culture as fast as possible. I heard Temples are super holdings to build if your religion allows "lay clergy" is that rare or easy to modify? A kingdom, two duchies and filling up with temples seems the best, right? Those not controlled directly give up to 50% of the taxes by your religious council person. That seems awesome. If you are kinda the Pope of your religion, does this have more benefits? Do you need holy sites or is it advantageous not to be tall but widespread? What's the best starting position for this? Any tips or potential problems?
@DoubleBizzy
@DoubleBizzy 3 жыл бұрын
These are great questions that I don't know the answer to yet. I do know that if you want to be the head of your own religion, you basically have to reform or "invent" your own new one with the correct tents / doctrines. The more you change, the more expensive it becomes in terms of piety. You can get a lot of piety through the Learning lifestyle or by winning holy wars. Yes, "lay" clergy and probably a "temporal" head so it can be passed down through your dynasty - I believe "spiritual" head ends up being someone else, like the Pope for Christianity. I don't know if being "lay" clergy allows you to hold temples. I still prefer tall actually, because I've come to find out that barony-level holdings can be revoked without tyranny. So castles (and temples and cities) are an easy way to adjust your own holdings to your domain limit. Give extras to family members (especially your young heir waiting for you to die) so they can earn money, prestige, etc. But if you go stewardship or gain more domain limit through innovations / legacies, you can take them back. I would think great starting positions to try this would be civs close to going feudal so you can build those temples. So, being a large tribal group (e.g., 867 Sweden - Bjorn Ironside) you can be cultural head to get innovations (marry high learning spouses) and be able to raid for a ton of money to pay for all those new holdings you want to build. Also check out Hungary and the Arpad migration, they are right on the edge of feudalism map-wise.

@@DoubleBizzy Hmm, just watched another tutorial. You can convert to an existing religion with ease, but a reform of a faith can take a lifetime! In a custom faith you need to choose: Spiritual (you have a head of the church like the Pope) or Temporal (you lead the faith) and Theocracy or Lay clergy (the last means you can own temples. It doesn't say what happens to the temples you don't own if you have too many.) Many nice options to choose from, so much fun to do this. There is an option to consider witchcraft no longer a crime and to change gender laws. Each deviation from the original faith does increase the piety cost (2000+). Getting this and Holy sites is a lot of work though. Sweden is cool, but Bohemia, with three counties with 6 holdings seem perfect for a more peaceful/intrigue turtle campaign. If the culture area is small enough (don't know) to own it all (making one culture head) that might also make it perfect for advancing this at an incredible pace. Both high learning and high average development boost the speed. The only county with 8 is a cool option too. There is a noble with a large army on the coast of France (forgot the name) that can practically go anywhere he wants, that's nice too.

Mecca: It has 2 sacred sites, which give tons of gold and development. Temples give additional piety and Muslim faiths have lay clergy, which further increases your income if you run a small kingdom/duchy. Also you can name yourself as head of faith almost immediately by having 2 holy sites. Just make sure the religion you believe in is Suni or they're going to declare a bunch of holy wars on you.

Great vid, I love tall gameplay, at least in the beginning 100-200 years where you have to consolidate. Maybe you could do one about the building slots in baronies, I think it's very useful to know which are the stacked ones. I feel like development should be tied more to your holdings, having 100 dev. in a county should enable you either more building slots per baronies or enable you to create more holdings in the same county.
@DoubleBizzy
@DoubleBizzy 3 жыл бұрын
I am finding out in my Sibling Rivalry playthrough that development does indeed affect buildings. For example, you need development to get cultural innovations, which in turn unlock upgrades to the holding as well as to the buildings. There was a money glitch where I got $14k from banishing my realm priest, but I had to wait for high medieval innovations to complete so I could max out the castles, temples, cities, and their buildings.
