Dante automatically selects a Master Clock for the network. If you want to specify which device you want to be the Master Clock, enable Preferred Master for that device. CL/QL consoles allow you do this under the console setup screen.

You should establish a base level for the analog gain at sound check, then turn the GC circuit on. From soundcheck forward, leave GC enabled and use the digital gain on the console to adjust the input gain for your console only. But what about Analog Gain? Well, if the pre-amp inside the Rio is not providing sufficient info to the Analog-Digital converter, you won't be receiving a signal that is of the same quality of a hotter signal. In a practical sense, you typically elect an engineer to set the analog gain(typically monitors). They establish the Analog Gain level, and after soundcheck you both work with GC enabled and work with the digital gain on your desk. You really only need to go back and adjust the analog gain if the level drops too low or you clip the mic pre. Keep in mind that as you turn the Analog Gain up/down with GC on, the level for other consoles on the network will stay the same. This is the beauty of this technology. Where you can get into trouble is if the mic pre starts clipping on the analog side, and you turn down the analog gain with GC enabled. In this case, the analog mic pre will stop clipping. But on the digital side the Gain Compensation will turn it up even more, therefore resulting in clipping on the digital side. The solution would be to turn GC off and turn down the analog gain to a reasonable level, then turn GC back on. Keep in mind that the reason you want to hit the mic pre at a reasonable level(around -18 dBFS) is this allows you to get a better S/N ratio(which = better quality) out of the Analog to Digital Converters inside the box. You can change the metering point on the desk which allows you take a look at both levels, both pre.GC and post D. Gain. Hope that helps.

If it clips, it means that the input gain of the signal is to high so the GC needs to be adjusted in order for the signal not to clip!
