Claiming the Throne: First Chair on Opening Day Arapahoe Basin FOR 31st YEAR IN A ROW 23/24 Snowboard season 10-29-23.
It was a dark and snowy powder day morning as the last stars of the night twinkled above, and the light of a nearly full moon powered it’s way through the storm clouds a group of dedicated snowboarders and skiers stood in the cold darkness, their breaths creating little clouds in the crisp mountain air. They were the chosen few, the guardians of tradition, the seekers of the ultimate thrill. This was no ordinary morning; it was opening day of the 2023/2024 season at Arapahoe Basin, and the race for first chair had begun.
Among them was the “First Chair Family”, a group of hard core snowboarders with a heart full of stoke for the shot of being the first public guests to ride the lift. They spent the entire night at the base of the lift.
Chad Otterstrom, Anthony Ugalde (aka Big Ant), Trailer Tom, and Nate Dogggg were once again reunited on this epic quest.
The atmosphere was electric, a blend of excitement, anticipation, and camaraderie. The line of fellow adventurers stretched far behind them, a testament to their dedication. These were the souls who lived for the mountains, who yearned for the sensation of gliding down the white ribbon of livin’ and who cherished the title of "First Chair."
As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, the group's energy surged. The mountain staff bustled around, preparing for the grand opening, while news reporters and photographers captured the scene. Trailer Tom and Nate Dogggg exchanged glances, their smiles reflecting the shared thrill of the moment.
Finally, after three days and two nights of waiting in line that felt like both an eternity and an instant, came the moment they had all been waiting for. The official opening for the season!
A roar of cheers erupted from the crowd, and their hearts pounded with exhilaration. The lift operators signaled to the first chair riders, and they rushed forward, their boards slid up to the “WAIT FOR LIFT HERE” sign. Trailer Tom, and Nate Dogggg were among the first in line, a testament to their dedication to be the first to ride the chairlift on opening day for the 31st year in a row..
As the clock struck 8:00am on Sunday October 29,2023 the excitement reach its zenith. The chairlift slowly began its ascent, carrying them towards mid mountain. The world fell away beneath them, and they were suspended in a breathtaking panorama of snow-covered peaks and endless possibilities.
With every passing minute, although the snow continued to fall somehow the sky brightened, revealing a pristine landscape of the fresh season. The first chair family exchanged high fives once more for their historic achievement, their eyes gleaming with pure stoke. This was it-the culmination of sleepless nights of waiting, the reward for their dedication, and the beginning chapter of another epic season.
As they reached the top of the Black Mountain Express lift, the freshly fallen snow was like a blank canvas waiting to be painted with their victory lap tracks. With a whoop of joy, Trailer Tom, Nate Dogggg, Chad Otterstrom, and Big Ant plunged down the mountainside, their boards slicing through the powder with grace and power.
The adventure had begun, and the mountain employees that worked so hard for this moment welcomed its first conquerors with open arms. For Trailer Tom, Nate Dogggg Chad Otterstrom, and Big Ant earned the title of "First Chair," this was more than a ride-it was a tradition, an inspired mission, and a declaration of their love for the sport of snowboarding. When they carved their way down the slopes, they knew that another unforgettable season had begun.
