He's my "I saw him before he was famous" story. My wife and I were visiting Austin, TX in 2005 and decided to see Keb Mo' who happened to be playing while we were there. Local kid Gary Clark Jr. was the opening act. He walked on stage solo with a guitar, harmonica on a neck strap, sat down to a bass drum on one foot and high hat on the other. Then he put on the greatest one man show I've ever seen. I've been a huge fan since that day.

Man I love GCJ! My fav songs in order: Grinder, Numb, Blak and Blu (from the live record), Bright Lights, Pink Caddy, This Land. I saw one of his shows here in Germany and something really cool happened. Apparently, some guy standing somewhere behind me, held up a sign saying something like "It's my bday, get me on stage". Turns out this guy is an actual guitar teacher from Poland and guess what - GCJ gets him on stage for the last song. He burned the place to the ground with his solo. One of the coolest moments I have ever seen during a live show.

I've seen GCJ probably five or six times, and every time it's different. He never plays a song the same twice. It's all about to feel and soul in his playing. Him and mayer live at the top of my spotify year end wrap up. I've also been lucky enough to see Marcus King, Eric gales, and Kingfish this past year at a music festival. All great artist

Gary Clark Jr. makes me think of what the great blues players of the 1930s might have done if they lived in our era. His style is different, but it's similarly primal, rough around the edges, and soulful.

"Things are Changing" is a really awesome and underrated song off that album! GCJr is awesome and glad you listened to him as well! And I agree that his Live Work is just pure awesomry! But also, I'd implore you to pay attention the second guitarist in his band, King Zapata!! When I saw GCJr play live a few years ago, to me, he STOLE THE SHOW!!! Such a killer second guitarist! Really has some killer SRV guitar work in the band and he really sits well and solos well behind GCJr.

I found out about Gary Clark Jr when I purchased his signature SG. 3 P90 pickups. Most of my guitars are loaded with those. I’m a lover of single coil pickups but never found strats comfortable. I saw those 3 P90s and thought “ Does that SG do the strat thing?” And it does! Kinda. It can do those out of phase sounds but not not in the traditional way. So I fell in love with it and it came home with me. Then I researched who the heck GCJ was and was blown away. Great songs, tone, voice, playing and vibe. And also hats. The man loves P90s and hats as much as I do. Totally sold.

Dude, I’ve been listening to this guy recently that has completely rocked my world. His name is Jd Simo. You’ve probably heard of him, he’s based out of Nashville- but man hes got it going on. Takes old blues songs from Fred McDowell and Junior Kimbrough and adds some some psych flavor to it and it rocks. His most recent album, Mind Control, is definitely his best and most authentic work. I would check him out. He also does some soul stuff in the vain of Curtis mayfield- which kind of reminds me of some of Gary’s R&B flavorings

Came here to say this. Like 90% of the time he just sits back and plays the simple chords and rhythms the song needs without making it about himself, but when the song *does* call for fireworks? He can rip it up with the best of them, and very tastefully too.

One of the best shows in my life. ( by the way, most of the concert is in YT - Gary Clark Jr Sala Riviera Madrid ) Some songs of GCJr are simply perfect: When my train pulls in The Healing Grinder.....and soooo many others. Master of guitar, BUT, also a master writing songs. Big fan here.

I live in Austin TX and I have met Gary Clark Jr several times. I go to Antone's for live blues quite often which he is the primary reason it reopened. He is a really quiet guy and kind of shy. However, he has always been very approachable. On stage he transforms into a completely different person. Much like Joe Bonamassa is a completely different person on stage.

Heard the lead single , Ain’t Messin’ Around on a local radio station. Got me hooked, immediately downloaded the whole album. Still one of my favorites to this day. That album, in combination with Tedeschi Trucks, Marcus King, Gov’t Mule, Dave Matthews, and Chris Robinson Brotherhood really shaped my ear sonically to a wide range of sound that was very different but still somehow similar. But I remember Blak and Blu being a specific turning point from classic rock to a more appreciative blues/gospel/jam style that is still my favorite 8 years alter.

I actually spent my teen years watching Gary play for $5 and Eve Monsees used to jam with my late mentor Sonny James. Sonny had a vintage store just a couple of doors down from Antone's records and would later form a band with Eve and Mike Buck called the Soul Proprietors and later The Unseen eye. There is not a lot of footage of Sonny but I highly recommend trying to find some and abosolitley recommend checking out Eve Monsees live. Eve and Gary were best friends growing up and she helped him get started on guitar. If there is anyone underrated it's her.

Gary Clark Jr is beyond amazing. I don't find his playing massively technical but when he plays, it's like he leaves this planet and becomes one with the music. Also, and i know that politics are taboo, but the giant F off to racism that "this land" is... Not only is he right, but his position is righteous. AND THEN he melts face with his playing. As a guitar player, he's in my pantheon alongside Clapton, Roy Buchanan, velvert Turner, T Bone Walker. Yeah he's friggin amazing. when my train comes is a great tune of his (he did it live on jam in the van). He also covered Albert Collins' if trouble was money. Unreal. I agree about his live stuff. It's all good but live is sublime.
