Clara Mattei explains that we are required to live within a kind of social order to function as a society - but this 'capital order' might not be the best option for us. Perhaps it's not necessarily natural to be subordinate to an employer at all times.
Austerity is more than just a policy: it is mutually reinforced by sturdy economic theory which justifies these policies as the most efficient and rational options. This theory centres the worker as central to the economic machine, thus perpetuating the employer/employee structure.
Mattei argues that austerity is simply the means by which you can secure the stability of this capital order, shutting down the public's political imaginatation to 'alternatives to capitalism'. She lays out a few examples throughout history where this capital order has been questioned.

As someone proud of his Red Clydeside heritage listening to Clara gives me the warm fuzzies. All power to the workers' councils.

25:03🤔 There are several examples today of politicians saying just that - at least in Scandinavian countries. They win elections promising to keep or cut the level of public spendings.

I am reading her book and it’s great. Austerity is the lead idea promoting extreme right wing politics, and it’s behind the current wave of right wing economics, usually called Tina, ‘there is no alternative’ - a told lie and extreme right wing politics, towards a fascist governance. Read the book!

@John Maisonneuve : _"towards a fas ci st governance."_ The path to fa scis m is via soc ialis m, hun. There is no ext reme rig ht win g in the first place, and fas cis m was an aut horita rian f ar-lef t, soc ialis t ideo logy and philosophy.

@@Historia.Magistra.Vitae. you are so wrong! The term ‘socialism’ has been demonized. Social Security, medicare, etc. are social programs that are socialist type policies. Progressive taxation, the federal interstate etc. are socialist type of programs. Don’t fall for the right-wing corporate propaganda.

@@Historia.Magistra.Vitae. how so? Fascism is the Capitalist state with the gloves off. If it was socialism it wouldn't seek to crush the workers movement, it wouldn't maintain the banks and haute bourgeoise at the commanding heights of society.

@@hanbaobao8147 _"Fasc is m is the Capital ist stat e with the gloves off"_ Incorrect. Fas cism was a form of soc ialis m. Fas cism literally opposed liberal capit alism, but also international soc ialism, hence the concept of a “third way,” their centralized economic policies obe yed collect ivist and social ist principles, openly opposing capit alism and the free mar ket, favoring natio nalism and autarchy.
