Clara was a beautifully gifted pianist. She was one of the first to play from memory and not rely on sheet music. She had many tragedies in her life and was a much better pianist than Robert Schumann who started out to be a lawyer. She had 8 children by him, 4 of which died before her own passing. Robert and one of her sons died in an insane asylum. She lost her hearing towards the end and was confined to a wheelchair but she was a wonderful musician and she deserves recognition. Brava Clara!!! Her eyes in the above portrait are beautiful and full of life and love and sorrow and yes, dreams unfulfilled.

Most of these piano pieces are rather conventional leading to boredom. Sorry, Clara Schumann is a good musician but does not necessarily deserve more recognition than many other unknown composers who are never played in concert.... unless you consider we should take her gender into account...

Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn could have gone much further than they did were it not for the prevailing prejudice. Fanny was severely forbidden by her family to undertake a musical career, her place was in the family. Clara was encouraged both by her father and her husband to compose but had the prejudice built into her and she said "Women can't compose." Fanny, after a visit to Rome where she was very much celebrated, rebelled and told her brother she was going to publish whether he liked it or not. She composed her magnificent Piano Trio but died shortly thereafter. In Clara's case I do think that she saw performance as her true vocation.

How could she have composed when she was forced to have 8 children and had to live with an ill spouse?! In a patriarchal, prejudiced society.
@felixdevilliers1
@felixdevilliers1 2 жыл бұрын
@@mirianna9102 No, Schumann was not a typical patriarchal male. Having children did not stop Clara from composing and Robert encouraged her to compose. Family life and all, she composed her lovely Piano Trio when they were both studying chamber music .In the year of studying counterpoint and Bach, she composed three Preludes and Fugues They composed a cycle of songs together in which her contributions were easily as good as his and sometimes better (The passionate first song in the Rueckert cycle). There were other factors that entered into Clara's choices. She was not quite as keen as poor Fanny Mendelssohn to be a composer against her family's convictions; Clara's main vocation was her performing career and she put that before composing. She wanted to interpret the works of other composers

No other woman can boast that 3 of the greatest composers of all time admired and loved her. Her husband Robert and Johannes Brahms learned from her and together with Mendelssohn she studied and discussed Bach regularly. Her complete diaries have been published in a book a few years ago by the Schumann foundation. Great insights into her life!

I know Robert Schumann very well, but never heard Clara Schumann's music, until now. Well, it is really outstanding, and it is a crime she has slipped to a footnote, if you let it. It is a mix of herself, her husband, Brahms and Chopin, but all her no matter what. Excellent. ** Would just like to say: I see a lot of this one is better than that one, and so forth, in regards to Robert Schumann. However, it isn't a competition. R.S. was an incredibly creative composer, and certainly had his own burden to bear. They were both fantastic composers, and there is room for all of them.
@pilouetmissiou
@pilouetmissiou 8 жыл бұрын
+Henrik Larsen this is a very correct think Henrik...there is room for all of them. And we don't have to forget that Robert did only composition in his life, entirely devoted to composition. She had a lot of occupations...very often we are not able to have a global vision; we concentrate on a thing and we judge this thing: this is better than that, as you say; but this is a very limited vision. In the case of Clara Schumann, and respect to her life, if we want to see with respect to her, we have to know something about her life.

To me this kind of behavior shows someone who is rather unsure of themselves and therefor feel the need to pull down someone else as to make them feel "cool". +bennemann her music is indeed being ignored. I doubt that this (still) is because of any form of discrimination against women. Obviously this was the case when she was alive. I'll admit that I hadn't listened to much of her works except for one or two pieces during live performances and what I'm hearing sounds very much like a mix of influences by R. Schumann, Beethoven, Chopin and Mozart. I might (after some more research and listening to the music) try and play one or two pieces for myself :)

I am stunned by this portrait. The eyes are soulful and positively haunting. If this is near accuracy, Clara Schumann was a beautiful woman. This music is lovely, too. She would play her deceased husband's A Minor Piano Concerto as a high point at her concerts. It's a very impressive and complex piece of Romantic music. Can you imagine the strong sense of emotion in those audiences? It must have been something. Edvard Grieg said in his diary that he saw "the bewitching Clara Schumann" perform the piece in 1858 at Leipzig. A performance which he said was "indelibly impressed on my soul."

Your empathy is wholesomely appreciated and acknowledged over here. :) Because I feel that her husband's music comes from a very personal and peculiar vision to her or other composers, it would be hard for me to berate what I perceive to be his legacy of very original and flavored music. I feel that Robert is a good example of a composer that if you know where he's coming from and what he's trying to do, he is fantastic and outstanding at what he does. Robert's world is a world of fantasy characters in fairy-tales, and I have felt that seeing this aspect in his music has been hugely rewarding. But I wholeheartedly agree that the musical world has been apathetic to the way that Clara's music was most likely undermined by a stoic and smug patriarchal society. And it is finally nice to see her music begin to get some of the respect it so deserves! The work recently being done to showcase the veritable capability of female composers is truly fantastic, and I do look forward to seeing Clara's piano works becoming as mainstream in recitals as those of her husband and others. :)

I hear a marked similarity in emotional quality and intensity, and general feel in many of the compositions of Clara and Robert. To my ear they share the qualities of a beautiful, poetic, sometimes euphoric lyricism and also sometimes express equally beautiful gut-wrenching tragedy. Clara Schumann had a full career as a piano performer. She played concerts all across Europe and was quite the star in her time. Much more so than her husband Robert, which may have created a difficult dynamic for them at times. When Edvard Grieg met with her after the death of her husband he told her how popular Robert Schumann's works were becoming up in distant Norway. He thought it would cheer her up, but instead her face darkened and she replied "Now, he's becoming well known..." In other words, why had it not happened earlier when he was still alive, and would have helped with his poor mental state. According to Grieg, he became embarrassed when his comment didn't have the expected effect on Clara. But he understood what she was talking about.

This music is certainly at least equal to that of many well known composers. I also admire her for her heroic and admirable attitude in life. She took good care of Robert Schuman and her family before and after his mental and emotional unraveling, a very tragic story. I have read that his illness was that of a manic depressive nature, not schizophrenia as previously thought. In either case he could have been treated successfully with medications today. What a tragedy. On the issue of Brahms; they may have had a successful love relationship were it not for his deep seated fear of a relationship with a woman. I'm not saying he was gay -and certainly not all gays feel that way about sexual love with a woman, but like Tchaikovsky, trying to have closeness with a woman only exacerbated his negative feelings I believe-I may be wrong, it was a long time ago that I read about this issue, if someone knows the true story, please let us know. But the more I listen to this music the more impressed I am. She was a phenomenal composer, deeply romantic and very melodic, but at a superficial level she sounds to me more like Schubert . Again, if I compare her to a male composer it's only because those are the only points of reference we have. It was a very chauvinistic society in those days, and only a very extraordinary woman like Clara Wieck would have even been paid much attention to. Gabe Meruelo.

To all the good People who placed a comment on my comments: I admire Clara Schumann for her work, her talent and her life - and especially for taking care of Johannes Brahms - in his young years - and later. Her husband became slowly 'mentally ill', until he retracted from any public life. Robert Schumann is/was a great composer that took the Romantic inspired music another step ahead to modern times. Best regards, Søren

One compares music, not because of the sex of the composer, but because it's music. If you order a steak in a restaurant and it doesn't taste as good as the last steak you had, you take notice. You don't ask the sex of the cook. It's all in the flavor and texture of the meat.

A great pianist and composer who performed all over Europe during the mid 1800s. She was not exactly an oppressed female as some are saying, and had a full career as a performer beloved by thousands all across the continent. More popular at the time than her very talented husband, and given his mental health her life with Schumann must have been tough, but her relations with others including Brahms were full of kindness and good music. I am currently reading the diary/letters of Edvard Grieg and he has nothing but good things to say about her piano playing. And Grieg was very picky. He didn't mind saying how much he disliked a performance and even walked out of a few of them when he felt the musicians misinterpreted the music. He was very critical of Liszt for example and said so on a number of occasions, but was very impressed by Clara Schumann's performance particularly of the Robert Schumann A minor piano concerto which she played impeccably according to Grieg.

Just Brilliant. Clara was not always forgotten, blame the modern age for that, and the modern tendency to destroy anything they can't understand. We always remember the Schumanns as talented equals.

+Søren Rasmussen I'm taking care of a female Chihuahua, that is not prepared to make any arguments to me right now - mostly she does not understand why I have to sit in front of my computer and respond - to whome. In the same time I have to prepare what kind of music I will listen to in the upcoming days and weeks - Milla (that is the name of the dog) will always look at me with some patience - and love.. My girlfriend is going to Moscow to take care of her mother - when she comes back I will be much better of knowing Russian composers and music.

Clara Schumann in her long life (she far outlived her more famous husband who was committed to an insane asylum after attempting to commit suicide) performed in more than 2,000 concerts at the piano. Most musicians thought she was the better pianist (and composer) of the two. She was instrumental in Brahm's development and they may have been in love. She was one of the first concert pianists who played from memory (doing so starting at the age of 13).

To my dear brothers you have just been introduced to a brilliant sister composer, and instead of opening your minds and eyes to other great women composers you start to compare her works to male counterparts. Bennemann you said it "Such a shame society didn't (and still doesn't really) accept that women can be composers." Let me correct you 'great composers'. If you truly wish to be enlightened and expand your horizons may I suggest you go to You Tube and just tap in 'Women Composers'. You will encounter many websites, two are very educational one by leongstereosound - 'Three Important Women Composers: Clare Schumann, Amy Beach, and Florence Price'. Jennifer Cluggish-Leong who introduces you to these women is an amazing violinist (as many women are). Then there's 'Rosario Marciano plays piano works by women composers' (pianusko). Hit the Show More and be blown away how many women composers there are, and that's just a fraction. Enjoy your new journey! Have a nice day and follow your bliss.

I'm having so much fun expanding my musical horizons. Take care Laurie

+Tom Cunha It only took me 62 years to click on 'Women Composers'. I'm delighted you're enjoying Clara's musical expression and artistry. As a young family my parents dragged my brother, sister and I kicking and screaming to Carnegie Hall. As an adult I'm glad they did. Some say age is a frame of mind, I just feel there's this amazing Universe out there and a wonderful part of that is music. I'm glad there's this newfangled thingy called the internet. Have a nice day, follow your bliss and 'Happy New Year' and many more to come!

+Laurie Bolles good comment--women composers worked under great prejudice (no longer, I hope) and spite of it produced great works of art--I will check out that post. Incidentally, here in santa fe , John Greenspan does Great American composers on Friday night--and we blessed when he featured a major composer of the month--a few months ago--Amy Beach! Lets add Jennifer Larmore and Joan Tower as contemporary composers and there is a Finnish one whose name escapes me--

+Laurie Bolles That's a narrow-minded view. People are not comparing her to those composers specifically because they are male, they're comparing her work to composers who are seen as greats of the the time and just happen to be male.
