I've been playing and teaching for over 50 yrs and this is one of the best videos I have seen on breath support and changing registers. I will definitely use your tips with my students and share this video with them.

Thank you also for this detailed information. I think that ultimately we really need a human teacher to guide us and give us feedback, but still there is a lot that can be learned from these helpful KZfaq videos! There's a lot of good, knowledgeable teachers out there.

I appreciate hearing from you! You are 100% correct: these videos cannot substitute for face-to-face human teaching at all. Like many of us during the pandemic, I made this video as a potential resource for the students and teachers who would normally attend my university's summer band camp. It has been nice to see this have a productive life beyond the immediate purpose, though!

I've been playing for 2 weeks and am currently playing on the clarion register. What I am finding challenging is the smooth transition from A to B...
@SteveBecraft
@SteveBecraft 7 ай бұрын
If you're successfully playing in the clarion register you are hopefully already doing some good things that will help the register change between throat A and the B one step above! Playing this interval smoothly takes most of us a long time to feel like we're doing it well. Be patient and continue working to improve your air, voicing, embouchure, and the control of your left index finger. Best of luck!

I am a saxophone player trying to teach myself clarinet to double. Your lesson was very helpful with the difficult register change. I have a question. When i play over the break, i find that the notes don’t come out if i press the whole register key like i would on the sax. Instead i find that i have to press just the lower most part of the register key for the note to come out. I had my clarinet serviced a few weeks ago so there are no leaks. Is this usual? Thx for your very instructive lesson!

I'm glad to hear that you found this video helpful! Without seeing and hearing exactly what you are experiencing, I think your observation of how you get a better result when you only press the "lower most part" of the register key is instructive! My hunch is that when you move your thumb too much (as one can get away with on saxophone), you are slightly opening the bottom of the thumb tone hole. This is a common problem for less-experienced clarinet players, especially for someone who is coming from the saxophone! You might try to video how your thumb moves while interacting with the register key to check on this. It doesn't take much for things to go wrong on the clarinet--I think this is why I've heard doublers refer to the clarinet as "The Misery Stick"!! LOL

Can you please turn up the volume? I can barely hear you. Thank you.

Yes, this is a problem and you have to crank up your volume all the way! This was my first video and I learned from my mistakes. They were still pretty low-tech productions, but I figured out what to do for the iMovie audio on some later videos. I appreciate you trying to watch!

You are correct, the audio was quite low and you have to crank your volume way up! This was one of my very first videos and it was not a very high tech operation! It was recorded with a simple Zoom video camera, edited in iMovie, and uploaded to KZfaq from there. I tried to make sure the audio wasn't clipping, but I missed something in the process and learned from my mistake. If I make any more of these in the future they should be at a better audio level.

@@SteveBecraft cool. I just wanted to let you know in case it was a technical glitch. I will try later on something with better volume than my old Lenova.
