An interesting comparison for me as I have the 4C and the Debut and a plastic clarinet. The Debut is heavily recommended for newer players yet in my experience is it harder to control the tone which gets coarse easily. Maybe this has to do with its low resistance.

For me, the Yamaha was the weakest across the board. At lower pitches, the Fobes and Vandoren were equally good - although have a different character. At higher pitches, the Vandoren was the clear winner. This of course is all dependent on your embouchure and reed so won't necessarily be the same for other players.

Stevepilot just remember that the mouthpiece is like 90% of the clarinet sound(besides the player of course). So a wooden clarinet won't really matter until you hit that wall where its physically impossible to get that "professional tone" where it sounds very warm and soft.

I'm looking to buy a budget mouthpiece, and looking at a 4c or Debut, on an old mid century horn with a busted Y-12 mouthpiece. It's a budget Czechoslovakian B&H import, but it's all wood. In the UK the 4C and Debut are the same price, I'll probably get the Debut after this. Thanks.
