I've worn Clark's desert boots for 40 years and currently own about ten or so pairs in different colors. You're right about their simplicity and the high quality materials. I belong to the crowd who holds these boots to be extremely comfortable. I never did need that much support in a shoe, just something sturdy to wrap around my feet. I can walk all day long on those crepe soles. I have one pair that is a quarter century old and still holds up to a good day's wear!

If Clark's improved these boots by adding a shank would that be known as the Shoe-shank redemption?

These are so popular here in South Africa among the farming community they call it Vellies. When the sole is done they stitch a piece of Tyre track to it and it lasts years

Hi, these were popular with British soldiers serving in the middle east and India, This was the informal civilian uniform “Mufti “ that was authorised when not dressed in issued uniforms. These boots were made by camp cobblers who would draw the outline of your feet on a paper and come back with a pair of boots the following week. The originally boots were commissioned in Cairo cobblers by South African soldiers whose old-military issue boots had failed them out on the desert terrain. We British soldiers who served in Africa, Muscat and Oman, Aden, and the Far East had at least a couple of pairs of these boots in our kit but always suede leather, and found them very comfortable boots.

It is oddly satisfying how sharp that little hooked knife is.

I cried when you cut the Clarks apart. 60 years ago I was working and able to afford them. Less than twenty bucks. Best shoes in the world at that time. Thanks for the memories.

I have the low cut version of these in the beeswax leather. I find them very comfy and they do run a size large. Not really sure how to care for them, but I don't imagine they will really last long enough to worry about that. Again the sound of the knife makes my spine tingle. I've worn these almost daily for 10 years. My second pair is about to be retired. They are the least waterproof boot I've ever worn. They are insanely dangerous on wet and icy surfaces. When it's dry there's nothing better imo.

Clark's are Jamaican favorite shoes i have been wearing Clark's since the 1970s at that time a pair of desert boots was $15 Jamaican, we call the bottom cheese Clark's company recognized Jamaican by putting a booklet into the box of a pair of Clark's talking about the history of the desert boots and in that booklet they mentioned that Jamaican call the rubber bottom cheese, by the way back in the day Clark's desert boots only comes in one color khaki color it was many years after we get the coco brown

I find these shoe-splitting videos soothing. Especially the crepe sole part for some reason.

I think the reason the discoloration happens isn't so much that the wax or oil is "moved" in or out of the leather, but that the surface area of the leather is increased by stretching and opening the fibers (the oil/wax follows, and also has increased surface area, thus a duller appearance due to more scattered light), and then when you rub it what happens is that the fibers, oil, and wax are burnished and simply smoothed out, causing less scattering of light.

Explains why my heals hurt at the end of the day. Been wearing for a few years. They're great for work where it's semi-casual, but wanna still look semi-nice.

I bought these for really cheap on sale before hopping on a train and didn't think anything of them other than they looked nice with grey pants. Now they are my favorite shoes and are incredibly comfortable, even standing for twelve hour shifts

An interesting thing about crepe is when repairing you do not need glue, you just scour both mating surfaces and then press with low to midium pressure after finishing apply French chalk as to remove the takcy finish. Off cuts can be used for removing glue and marks, also when picking stitching rubbing with a piece of crepe will pull out cut stitches quickly

Loving the style and looks of these shoes, I’ve had multiples of for years now as the bottoms don’t generally hold up all that well. Being tried of throwing away and buying the same shoe I called a shoe cobbler to see if there were any options of resoling. To my surprise, there were. I had mine resolved in a creme colored vibram bottom (pic can be googled). Since replacement, this shoe has become a game changer. It is so much more supportive and I can finally we’re them in the rain 😉.

Finally! A video that explains why my heels hurt after a day of working in a pair of these Clarks! I stand most of the day at work (I'm a chiropractor) and find my heels hurting towards the end of a long stretch of standing. It's a soreness that I hadn't experienced with other shoes/boots and was baffled why this happened. I knew that they were a classic style of shoe and bought them for that reason but didn't realise that they had a design flaw that inherently leads to discomfort. I thought about adding a store-bought insole hoping to add some cushioning to the heel but now I realise that it would be futile given that these boots don't have a shank. One thing I discovered is that the crepe sole do not slip on ice/snow in comparison to other shoes. I was with friends at a snow trip here in Victoria, Australia and realised that I was walking upright and comfortably in the carpark with my Clarks while my mates were slip-sliding around in runners! Somehow the rubber composition of these crepe soles are better and grippy-er on ice and snow. I have a couple of pairs of these chukkas and they look good paired with jeans (selvedge or faded) or chinos. Thank you for this video!

The classic Clarks Desert boot was never a walking shoe, that's the Desert Trek or Wallabee. These boots are made for lounging and liming stylee!

The Clark’s Trooper was amazing, fixed all of the sole issues w/ the regular desert boot.

The history of the boots is really interesting and would explain all you need to know - I’m surprised you didn’t mention it. They were the off duty boots for English soldiers fighting in the desert. They were designed to be taken on and off really quickly to empty out sand. They are casual boots by design.

My Clark's Chelseas definitely have a shank, and they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. Weird how they don't put a shank in these, they cost the same. Then again, they are significantly better crafted, with a leather layer in the heel and the arch.

I must love em, i have 5 pairs. My oldest pair is about 5yrs and still going. Though i have to admit, i took a pair same as in this video to France with me last October. Since getting back i have been experiencing arch pain. Decided to switch to Iron rangers now.

I have a two pairs both wedge soles both have been both resole a shank added and re lined. They super comfortable east to wear. Oh I forgot to add I now have proper cork in soles in them.

I've been wearing Clarks Desert Boots for almost 60 years. Received my first pair when I was 8 as a Christmas gift...so I'd have shoes just like my parents wore. I love them and feel they are extremely comfortable. I currently have 3 pairs--different colors--and I can't imagine not having Desert Boots in my closet and on my feet. I love the crepe soles and the pair with oil tan uppers.

I have a pair. It’s a casual boot to wear if you’re going out for fun. I also have a pair of Wallabee and those are much more comfortable for everyday.

I've had the same pair for 5 years. They are super comfortable and durable. Love the crepe soles. The secret is to size down 1.5.

They used to be my favorite Clark's, but I since found the desert trek and wallabee shoes. They're the desert boot killer. Thicker soles, and they just feel more robust. I'd say similar quality as Blundstone, but don't feel as sturdy. But I recommend Wallabees, I wear mine with a thick insole so they don't fall off.

I REALLY wanted to like my Clark’s, but you nailed it. Uncomfortable after a day’s wear, especially on the heel. And the sole had a bad habit of losing pieces of itself.

I have several different pairs of Clark's in various styles, and some are more comfortable than others, but all have given me pretty good service as city boots.

Australian made Rossi 4040 Pondie Desert Boot is now an Aussie footwear legend, after no longer being manufactured. I purchased a pair 5 years ago, just before Rossi stopped making them. They keep on keeping on. Tough, durable and very comfortable to wear.

6:13 it would be cool to cut a Clark Desert Trek in half like that. They have a seam right down the middle!

Interesting about the shank, I have these in grey suede and I love them and find them to be very comfortable. The Clarks Bushcare boots which are similar are the most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. I’ve worn them twice and retired them.

I’ve had their Hawkley Rise chukka model (discontinued) for about 3 years and they’re still going strong after constant use and even a 3 day motorcycle trip last summer! Not the best grip for riding a Harley, but they were comfy at least.

I wore Clark’s for many years during the 80s and 90 s, and yes,they were the most comfortable walking shoes ever. I quit wearing them when manufacturing moved out of Ingland and the quality with it.

Back in the 60's I traveled to Africa hitchhiking , I was wearing the "Desert Boots " from Clarks, well I tell you, they didn't last long, the soles came unglued...

I have two pair(black and brown) and it takes about a week to break in. Love the look and how comfortable they feel. I don't like how the black ones wear as well (look a little too shiny) as the brown pair I own. 5 stars from me!

I don't know about the normal leather version but I got a pair of these drawn brown suede ones when I was 15 and I REALLY started wearing them at 17-18 and honestly, they were pretty comfy and the laces took a while to snap. These were Clarks from a Clarks outlet too.

I tried two pairs, neither fit me right and within months of sporadic use they both failed me. Went with some Redwings and no complaints in 3 years.

Clarks Bushacre 2 boots. Exactly the same but it has a sturdy, brown, rubber sole. And half the price of the Clarks Desert boot.

I happen to have a pair of these shoes. Initially, they were very uncomfortable. But, they were also very narrow, since I had to go down half a size. Once I got through that, they are the most comfortable shoes ever!! And because they're lightweight, it sometimes feel as if I'm not even wearing shoes.

They've always fit me nicely. Clarks Originals in general. I've gone through 4 pairs of Desert Boots. Have some Wallabees, Wallabee Walks, Desert Trek and Jink

I have a won out beautiful beeswax leather pair and it excruciatingly painful to watch this! But I love the input of what I've been wearing and my experience really explained as to why the sock liner is slipped to the point I had to take it out.. but it's a beautiful pair, made me realize I needed to get a fresh pair and get rid of mine lolol... Love your content! Help me decide on my next iconic boots to cop, I'm thinking a Chelsea boot now lol thanks Weston!

I have never had my feet inside such uncomfortable shoes. I had a pair for one day, managed to return them. I can't understand how someone can like these.

I love my Chukkas. Took about a week to soften the leather above the toe - as it creased when I walked it was rubbing on the top of my foot. The slippery sole in the wet makes them not great to wear in winter, which is a shame. Other than the slippery sole, the only thing I’d change is having 6 lace eyelets rather than 4. I had my local shoe repairer add two more at the top and it made the boots fit so much better around my ankles.

I have owned a pair of these for about 2 years, and they have been in my closet for almost as long. They are just too uncomfortable to wear. I have tried getting new insoles, but it didn't help at all. They are just not for me I guess.

I respect Clarks for being a British shoe maker that tries to keep work in the country, and I appreciate they make some good stuff. My personal experience however was tragic. I treated my boots and immediately discovered that the leather on one boot was different from the other. One got lighter and the other darker as a result of the leather treatment. When I complained they told me to suck it. I didnt want to walk around like a hobo clown so I binned them. I think there was a time when Clarks were the benchmark of quality, but right now they need to either go full-quality, or outsource to China .... because this halfway house position is just resulting with "moderately expensive poor-ish quality footware".
