Jeremy Clarkson has questioned how so little of the money in the food supply chains ends up in farmers’ hands when they are taking most of the risk.
He tackled the issue of fairness in the supply chain during a behind-the-scenes tour of Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire on 24 April.
Select members of the press, including Farmers Weekly, were invited to the farm to celebrate the third series of the hit TV show Clarkson’s Farm, which gets its official launch on 3 May on Amazon Prime.

Credit to Charlie Ireland too, proving that a good and knowledgeable Land Agent can help cut through all that bureaucracy and red tape to assist farmers at making a profit.

But he probably isn't cheap (not that he should be, he is very competent and worth every penny), Clarkson can afford it but i doubt small farmers can

I find the “reality” of this show to give an insight into what it takes real farmers to make a living out of farming. Bad weather, crop failures, animal mortality, cannot be scripted. 🇨🇦

‘Real’ farmers in Europe are mainly huge agro. The couple of pigs Clarkson has are quite and all. Most pig farms here have an average of 5000 pigs. There are 134 MILLION pigs in Europe (almost twice as many as in the US) 95 million cows. Clarkson runs a very quite eco farm with different crops, a small farm shop and his friends. But it has nothing to do with the real big business that is European farmers. A group of people that received a TRILLION euro in subsidies in the past 30 years

@@MrJimheeren 'huge agro' is very susceptible to market, corporate and government interests though. The farm shop in Clarkson's farm and other farms avenue coupled with big agro arable is not a bad business model.

Even if some might be a bit cynical about the show (although I haven’t met anybody), I’d say Clarkson’s Farm has been a real boost for farming by informing people about how tough it is for farmers around the world, but also how rewarding and vital for us all.

He’s right on the money at the end. It really is a very nice way to spend your time. I absolutely love the show and I’m so happy to see that Clarkson has a side that none of us ever thought he did have. We have all seen him as petrolhead and an anti environmentalists but boy were we wrong.

When I first heard of the show on Amazon, didn't take it seriously as something to watch. Just thought it was Clarkson showing off about how rich he was that he could afford a farm. The show was interesting and seemingly truthful about the reality of how hard farming is.

I guess he is half way there already by not plowing and his drill method. Just haven't seen them do cover crops. In their case, it would increase their operational costs hugely in terms of seed and pesticides. I think the real solution for him is organic, to drastically cut down their operational costs. But it requires far more skill than they possess, and it would likely turn the farming community against them, as conventional farmers appear to hate organic farmers.

@@fermewilmotsagriculturebio3434 but can you imagine what it will do for farming ? NPK farming is dying. They would only need to invite someone like Gabe Brown out and I can tell you, a lot more people will get into farming when they realise what can be possible.
@fermewilmotsagriculturebio3434
@fermewilmotsagriculturebio3434 8 күн бұрын
@cedriccbass-jp8ky I take all that with a grain of salt. There are plenty of farmer/prophets making most of their income through consultancy, courses, and appearances instead of farming. While if you look at studies comparing forms of agriculture you see that as long as you work with cover crops the effects on soil regen are basically the same, the rare studies that also look at Nox emissions even show that no till regen makes your soil emit more NOX through asphyxia. Which is hundreds of times worse for the environment than Carbon. I don't know enough about that farmer/ consultant in particular, but there are charlatans out there, and also ones that have a more hybrid and less doctrinal approach. The guy they had on this season with the mixed crop probably falls in the idealist category, who sticks too close to a doctrine.

The Chicago Board Of Trade, now CME Group, was established in 1848, specifically for midwestern grain and oilseed farmers, elevators and merchants in the USA, could hedge their risk with futures contracts which still goes on today. Sadly in the UK, we are not as liquid or developed.

Son of a farmer, friend of a farmer, and entire extended family of farmers here. Watching this series and observing the red tape, I was flabbergasted. If that same stunt was pulled in South Africa, your political death would be quick. Tiny rural towns would kill for more vehicle traffic, and our farmers would despise being told that they don't actually own their land (building regulations and so on). NIMBYism is very rare here, and a despicable position to hold in anywhere in the world. No subsidies (all abolished in the 1990s). Just raw market power keeps our farms going. As much as I love Clarkson's Farm, his small farm is around the bare minimum for a viable operation. The attention he brings to real farm issues in the UK is absolutely amazing though.

The most outrageous part in all that is as the farmer earn less and less from their products, consumers have to pay more and more. In france for exemple farmer earn 30cts/L of milk while at the same time the consumer is paying 1,3€/L

Its seems to me uk gov could streamline so much regulation without even removing any requirments. Contacting 6 agencies for planning permission, you could make that one point of contact. We probably need to talk about the regulations themselves too but we can all agree that how its done is bad.

When I used to travel around farms with my father in the 1960's Clarksons farm is what you used to see, a mixed farm, with some arable, a few cows, pigs, hens, true mixed farms, then we joined the EU and farmers specialised to get the most lucrative subsidies, and relied on them. Farms havve to be diverse to survive.
