Join me for session 3 of this FREE video bootcamp series. Continuing from were video I left off yesterday I'll share some of my top tips about what to look for when finding clothes to transform with botanical printing, give you tips about ecoprinting yardage for sewing and discuss my favourite ways of bundling garments. I'll also let you know a few of my favourite indie pattern designers whose pieces work beautifully for eco printed fabric and share how to print on simple felt sculptures!
I hope to cut through the clutter and demystify the 'dirty pot' eco printing process for you and share this wonderful way of working without using traditional powdered mordants!
Whether you are a total beginner or wanting to move towards a more sustainable textile practice, hopefully you will find this helpful and pick up plenty of information to help you achieve the results that you are looking for.
I’ve many years experience teaching felting and eco printing in Ireland, North America, Australia and mainland Europe as well as over five years facilitating online workshops. In 2022 my Eco Print & Wet Felt Club membership launched. If you’re interested in joining my newsletter list it’s the best way of keeping up to date with tips, free tutorials and news of upcoming online and in person events.

Hi Nicola, thanks for your ideas on the echo pot method. Boiling point of water is 212 F / 100 C…. Someone asked about using an electric hot plate and you said that it may not get hot enough. If it boils water it is as hot as you get in a fire with a pot of boiling water. Cheers

Cheers for tomorrow. I’ll be later watching. How do I join the Club. And the FB Group.I’m a Printmaker. Bookmaker. Paper Dyer. Hardly any fabric. I had interesting s beautiful silk and silk/wool blend with Pink Camilla Blossoms. I did mordant because I was new to this “dirty”Pot dyeing. I used stamen on to get Georange and stamens cut off to get lovely reddish pink. Now want to use inks for designs of Camellias on each end of the scarves. Oh. I microwaved the blossoms 20 seconds to wilt the heavy blossoms on freezer paper. Cheers to us all. 🍸

May I ask if rust can be neutralized with salt…many rust dying videos say to use salt to stop the rust process. I only ask because in dirty pot eco rust is involved…thank you for inspiring and enticing us! Your videos are so very thorough and clear 🫶 Ayla from West Virginia US
@clasheen
@clasheen Жыл бұрын
Hi Ayla, following on from all my early research I only ever use bicorbonate of soda (or baking powder if I have no bicarb) to neutralise my textiles. There is so much information available freely online that it can become confusing at times! Everything that I share works for me and has stood the test of time. I don’t recommend trying salt because I honestly think that bicarb works very well and don’t want to give information about something I haven’t tried successfully.
@ayla8343
@ayla8343 Жыл бұрын
@@clasheen thanks so much for your kind reply. Here in the US we would call Bicarbonate of soda Arm n Hammer baking soda…now I understand and will use this for neutralizing my rust dyed fabrics. I am in future eco dying with plants following your environmentally friendly guidance. In my last attempts on cellulose fabrics I pre mordanted with food grade alum in iron water with a few good results….thank you for the key to more excellent results!

Annato is easy to get here in Poland, but it gives yellow - ?! It is in massive use to make cheese more yellow. I use it to colour my soaps yellow. And since I'm a soapmaker I wish to know whether you use olive oil soap in a bar (Sodium hydroxide) or in a paste (Potassium hydroxide)? The paste soap is the base to make liquid soaps.
@clasheen
@clasheen Жыл бұрын
Hi Ewa, Annato seeds print a hot red usually but almost have a light halo of orange or yellow around the outside of the print. I quite understand how they give cheese a yellow colour! In relation to the soap, I use either a bar of olive oil soap (usually Marseilles) or liquid Marseilles soap which I buy any time I am in France.

And, how do you wash your garments that are plane and printed fabric in one - as a white or as a dark clothing?
@clasheen
@clasheen Жыл бұрын
I wash all my eco printed garments together using olive oil soap, even if they have plain fabric too. Wool and silk I wash in the wool wash and cellulose fabric either in the wool wash or a longer more aggressive wash with more agitation. It just depends on the fabric and the prints but I wash similar colours together. For example, onion skin eco prints in one wash and darker leaf prints in another.

@clasheen
@clasheen 8 ай бұрын
Please check out my eco printing playlist for step by step videos sharing the process. I don't print with flowers because they do not give good results unless you work with traditional powdered mordants (Chemicals). I choose to work without in an environmentally mindful and health conscious way so only use limited leaves and bark.
