I just straight up stole most of my practices from College and HS coaches, but I did start having "live handfighting." It'd be 20 minute goes...so kinda like a grind match, but JUST handfighting, but when I'd blow the whistle, you'd have 10 seconds to attack. So to try and create and angle, or drop down from the underhook, whatever. These were kids who hadn't wrestled much, but were incredible athletes(they'd Wrestled for 1-2 years usually when I got there). So they knew the basics, but I did almost no top riding. Just block off, wrist control, get out on bottom and then hand fighting and shot fakes and motion on your feet. It was a great group of kids who had a lot of success(mostly due to the guy who got them out for the sport and started the program and invested the money to start the program) but I loved working with them and I THINK the handfighting took them to the next level. But that could just be me thinking it played a bigger role.

This is spot on. In HS you could literally post your hand on your opponent, and track their every move. In college, this simply doesnt occur, my coach would say "try to post and you are toast."

I’m an adult bjj practitioner than never wrestled but this actually makes sense… many wrestlers in high school are very lazy on offense and defense with their hands which makes them a much easier to defeat combined with youth, inexperience, and probably some weight differential 😅 But in college, these advantages are much less since IMHO the wrestlers appear much more disciplined and intentional with their hands

, coaches are everything I wrestled 3 years in HS nothing prior (outside of basic grappling knowledge from MMA, BJJ i done since 4th grade and got all state and placed 4th and 3rd and 3rd at states and had an overall 105-19 record over the three years and I was competitive AF so I never even thought this was good because I was much higher level in BJJ,MMA than wrestling and people would always tell me that I had crazy potential and if I went anywhere else and started earlier I'd be a monster. I thought they were just being condescending but years down the line learning more about wrestling how crazily strict, well other HS programs are run and even average ones are ran. While we had a guy that never even wrestled as the coach that was just a bodybuilder that played no sports on hs even and our practices would literally just be us lifting doing cardio getting shown basic moves on videos and then just having US with each other drill them show us nothing and then just have us wrestle. It was good for strength and conditioning and reaction time but we depending on the person literally 1-3 moves. I went through mine literally with a double leg, snap down, sit out and cement mixer (which I looked up and taught myself 🤣) I actually got, was far better wrestling later on in my 20s than when I was actually competing in wrestling because I started going some with higher level wrestles who were helping me out. Point is coaches are huge. Both technique wise and motivation wise. There are kids in situations like mine or worse that could potentially be state champion or even college level etc but don't even place at states cause of how bad the program situation is. Colleges for the most part are all going to be very goof coaches were many high schools have basically no coach, program and others hsve college level coaching and programs. Its one of the worst sports there is for gap in the level of coaching, programming effecting you.
