CLASS 66s Repairs, Reconstruction and Running (TRAIN LIFT IN ACTION) on my N gauge Model Railway.
Well after the last video the 66 was not my favourite loco. I did, though, order the parts to repair it. Also a new introduction along with a risky modification.
In this video I:
- I demonstrate how I fitted new worm drives to a Graham Farish class 66 (very similar for most farish diesels).
- Introduced the new loco and explain my plans for it.
- Discuss / explain my proposals for converting the DC running 66 to a dummy vehicle.
- Explain the issues of this conversion.
- Show all three 66s, the existing Colas one and many other trains running.

Morning John, that was a good job of heavy engineering, your very brave tackling these jobs. It's bad enough in "00" that I use never mind "n". I'm full of admiration. The layout looks brilliant and that lift is something else. Very well done you. You and yours look after yourselfs. Stay safe see you on the next one Eddy xx

Hi John - loved the "open heart surgery" on the first 66. Very clever of you to 3d print the motor block to turn another 66 into a "dummy". Enjoyed the running clips - especially the views of the block tanker train. Cheers Euan

Thanks Nicholas, yes well... its what Ive come to expect. In fairness though the model has clearly been sitting for quite a while as the grease had all congealed and the plastic cabs has degraded. I did pay a much lower price than normal, so even with these parts Im still well short of new cost from the the bigger outlets. Generally though I do find N gauge locos are normally perfect out the box. Whereas in my OO, of all the locos and trains I have, only ONE was perfect out the box (Bachmann 158).

Hi John - I realised i am a week behind on watching KZfaq videos !! Great to see the lift in action as its always impressive to see. Well done on mending the 66 and I never doubted you would fix it . Now the top and tail is a great idea and has now given me an idea too. I have a Lima Class 33 that has an old Ringfield motor I am going to attempt to convert to DCC if it works happy days , if not I will take out the motor and use it for top & tail or double heading............................Now your latest video looks interesting ,,,,,,,,,,,Cheers Kev
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kev, as ever I really appreciate your support. Ive heard that the ringfield motor doesnt take very well to dcc control. However, you can convert the motor for a CD drive motor. Strafpeffer Junction designed and made a conversion kit making the job very easy to do, and they work very well with dcc. www.strathpefferjunction.com/hornby-lima-ringfield-motor-upgrade-conversion-kits/ Hoping thats helpful

Hi John I have been in touch with David at Strathpepper and I might do a motor change for the class 33 and I have a newer Lima Class 59 which I might try with Ringfield motor and if it doesn’t run willchange for CD. If all goes pear shaped take out motor and use for double heading 🤣

Found the video interesting and well explained what you doing. In recent Hattons video about new Bachmann releases was said Bachmann put Locksound and Zimo decoders in their dcc ready fitted loco's so your 66 and any other Bachmann Farish loco's will be ftted with one of those brands.
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, I think Bachmann use a variety of sound decoders, but when you buy a model as DCC ready you can fit whichever decoder / sound file you like. I tend to use ZIMO decoders as they tend to work better with z21. Roco and zimo do tend to collaborate. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
@trevordickenson3196
@trevordickenson3196 3 жыл бұрын
@@piccadillymodelrailways Hello John, thank you for reply, I only mentioned what was said in Hattons because you said the original fitted decoder looked like your new Zimo decoder so may be it was or not a Zimo. If not mistaken, Bachmann dcc controllers are made by ESU locksound so I read sometime back and Z21 look's to be a good system from what I know about it.
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 3 жыл бұрын
Ahhh I see, yes Zimo do make many Bachmann decoders, but saw he original zimo and thought Id try it. As far as I know Bachman sell locos either DCC ready where you fit your own decoder or sound fitted. Yes Z21 is an amazing controller. I have two, black fir N gauge and white on OO

Hi John, As Allan said you are very good at taking the locos apart when you did the first one did you have a manual like Hovermotion 2020 has for his or was it trial and error?. Nice to see trains running and the lift in operation so well done. What with Allan with his murder and you with your secret train its becoming more like a detective channel than a train one but I am sure all will come good in the end. Please keep safe and well. Cheers Robert.

Hi Robert, Ive taken so many locos apart now its kind of second nature and replacing parts is quite easy. All Graham farish diesels are basically the same. Ive got give something for people to guess, lol. What sort of train do you think its going to be. Im scratch building most of it.

How free running are you cargo wagons from revolution trains? Mine are dreadful with so much drag!
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, at first mine were awful, it was more they kept jumping off the track. I was very cautious buying them after my pendo experience and the incredibly poor customer support. But I had to weight them. You could try three things 1. gently easing out the wheel bearings so its not so tight. 2. Drop of oil 3. Gently using a pin vice / hand twist drill, drilling out the wheel bearings. Im taking 0.1-0.2mm hardly anything just to ease the tension on the wheels. Now accurascale are making products for Revolution I sure quality will improve. Hope thats helpful
