The brake portion of the CDL exam is crucial. When done improperly, will result in an automatic failure. Your service brake and parking brake will be tested with the engine running, but, for the remaining tests, the bus will be turned off, though your key will be set back to the accessory mode so your gauges are functioning. Be sure your air pressure gauges read above 100 psi before you begin testing for air tank leaks, emergency light, sound, and spring brake functions.

@SchoolBusSass
@SchoolBusSass 8 жыл бұрын
Once you pass the pre-trip inspection, you will move on to maneuverability, where they will test how well you can maneuver the bus. In Ohio, our students must do a straight line backing maneuver, an offset parking maneuver, and then either a parallel parking maneuver or an alley dock maneuver. Some states may have you do a reverse serpentine, and others may have you do a drivers side parallel parking as well as blind side. Once you complete the maneuverability, you will do your road test. The examiner will take you on a road test to see how you handle the vehicle on the road. There are a number of automatic failures that can happen on the road, such as hitting a curb, driving with your door open, 11 miles over or under the speed limit, 6 miles over in a school zone, running a red light...which actually means running a yellow too. If you have a manual transmission bus, stalling will also end the exam immediately. Best wishes for a successful test outcome.

without watching every second, i'd say this is identical to our pre-trip in west carrollton. i don't know if you know vicki, our trainer, but the 'cracked, damaged, or broken with no loose or missing parts' line i hear in my sleep. that's what the state tester just wants to hear, i reckon. anyone looking to drive a bus, you'll know how to drive a bus long before you get all this stuff memorized. on the surface it doesn't look all that difficult, but when you've paid to take the test and doing all this outside in 35 degree weather with a state tester holding a stop watch and clipboard, things get real, lol.
@SchoolBusSass

Please note, some test sites or other states may require you to use wheel chocks while testing your air tank safety features. Check with your local testing facility, to see if wheel chocks are necessary. If so, test the parking brake and service brake as shown then, if necessary, place the wheel chocks at that time and continue the brake portion of the test. Make certain you have at least 100 PSI to start the air tank safety feature portion. If you must chock your wheels, remember to take your keys with you.

Under the hood, the steering rod is connected to a power steering pump which is gear driven. I think you pointed and said that's the gear box. Is it one and the same?
@SchoolBusSass
@SchoolBusSass 7 жыл бұрын
The gearbox or steering box, is not the same as the power steering pump. If you look on the video when I am talking about the power steering reservoir, which has a dip stick that you would check just like the oil dipstick, you would follow those hoses down which will lead to the power steering pump. The gearbox/steering box, has the pitman arm and drag link attached to it...the steering linkage. I hope that makes sense.

+mardoche bastien Try not to feel intimidated, Mardoche. You'll find that so much of this process, is nothing more than repetitive phrasing. So, if you add the phrase, It's not cracked, damaged or broken, there are no loose or missing parts,(and it's not leaking...to anything that can leak), you have half the monologue right there. Then, once you learn the front of the bus, all you'll be doing is repeating what you learned up front and applying it to the rear of the bus. (with regards to the brakes, suspension, and wheels) Having a pattern and sticking to that pattern, will also help in keeping you from missing or skipping components. Apply the same pattern theory to the inside of the bus, as well. If I can assist you through any other part of the CDL process, let me know. I'd be happy to help, if I can. You can do this!
@mado3623

+Therese Mileti so id say its not cracked damaged or broken,there are no missing parts and its not leaking?hopefully eventually i can learn all those parts at some point..im from mass is the cdl test the same for all states ?
@SchoolBusSass
@SchoolBusSass 8 жыл бұрын
+mardoche bastien Mardoche, I do not know the exact requirements needed for the state of MA. It is my understanding that many of the states require similar elements for the pre-trip portion of the road test. Have you all ready obtained your CDL class B permit? If you have not, you will need to take a series of written exams before you can do any on board training. Once you have completed the written exams, you can move on to On board instruction. I can send you a written script that can be used in conjunction with the video to help you learn what is necessary for the pre-trip portion of the CDL practical exam. School districts that have, *board owned vehicles* will usually have an OBI(On Board Instructor) and will provide all the necassary training if you are hired for that school district. If you leave your e-mail address, I will send you a copy of the pre-trip script .

What happen to putting on your seat belt??
@SchoolBusSass
@SchoolBusSass 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment and question. The seatbelt must be worn for the driving portion, or, on road portion of the state exam, and if it is not worn, for that portion of the exam, the result would become an automatic failure. When the video was produced, however, wearing your seatbelt while conducting the pre-trip portion of your examination, while on a private and, controlled environment, aka...a parking lot, was not a requirement. Using the best practice policy, I would advise all current CDL driving students to use their seatbelt regardless of location.

Do you have any tips to remember all rhe steps of pre trip 😕 I feel so discouraged.
@SchoolBusSass
@SchoolBusSass 6 жыл бұрын
Marilyn, try not to get discouraged. The pretrip can seem quite overwhelming initially. A large portion of the pre-trip, is nothing more than repetitive phrasing. Once you learn those key phrases, you have half of the pre-trip. Try grouping the components together...like, keep all of the suspension parts together, (front and rear spring mounts, torque leaf and spring leaf, U-bolts, and shock absorbers) Brake components together, and the wheel parts together. That way, you are not jumping back and forth between them and missing parts. If you look in the comment section, there is a link to a written script, that goes very well with the video. It is not word for word, but it is close and groups the parts. If you cannot locate the file or cannot read the file, let me know I can forward a copy to your e-mail address. You can do this! :)

Hi Therese, thank you so much for your video. I watched it quite frequently and went to take my CDL test today and the tester said I gave him one of the best pre-trips he's ever had at a test in his 8 years. I'm from PA. Your video definitely helped me a lot. Unfortunately, I have to redo some skills (parallel parking goofed me up) in two weeks. Hoping to pass that the second time around. I also purchased several copies of your book for me and few other drivers. I'm looking forward to reading it. Thanks again!

Your note really made my day! I am thrilled you did so well on your pre-trip! I may be able to assist you with a few tips on getting through parallel parking. Let me know if you are intersted. Lastly, I really hope the book makes you and your driver friends smile! Love the kids and my job. Enjoy the journey! :) Therese

Tyler, I am working on creating a parallel parking video. This is the script that I'm thinking about using. If you would be so kind to let me know your thoughts...and, if the tips help. I would be very grateful for your input! Thank you! Therese :) You will start the parallel parking maneuver completely forward of the parallel parking box. With your seatbelt and hazard lights on, place your bus in reverse and release the parking brake. Slowly go straight back until the rear dual of your bus, is visually aligned with the front left cone of the parallel parking space, making sure the wheel is sitting no more than 18 inches away from the cone, then stop. As you are stopped, turn your steering wheel all the way to the right before you start backing again. Hold the steering wheel tight, in that position, while backing. Look in the lower left side mirror, back up until you see the three rear cones of the parking space in that lower left side mirror. Go slow! Once you see the third cone come into view, stop immediately! As you are stopped, turn the steering wheel to the left until your wheels are completely straight. Once your wheels are straight, continue backing until you see the front left cone just disappear from view of service door window, and stop. As you are stopped, turn your wheel all the way to the left. Hold that position as you begin backing again, until you can see that your front and rear bumpers of the bus are completely to the right of the outer left cones, then stop. As you are stopped, straighten your wheels, pull your parking brake, put the gear shift into neutral, get up out of your seat and take a look at your final position. Ensure that your vehicle is completely inside the box and that no part of your vehicle is to the left of the parking space. Get back on your bus and honk your horn. That will indicate to the examiner that you are ready to have them judge your final position for that maneuver.

Therese, I love this! Those tips are super helpful. Looking forward to your video! Will this also work if I would change the directions for the bus to park the opposite way?
@SchoolBusSass
@SchoolBusSass 7 жыл бұрын
If you are driver side parallel parking, turn the wheel in the opposite direction of what is stated above. The pivot points will all be very similar. I forgot to mention, when you as you are backing with your wheel turned to the right, you only want to see the three cones...no space after the third cone...hope that makes sense.

They also make you check the air tank refill rate. You must begin counting when the gauge reaches 80 psi while upping the rpms, and stop counting when it reaches 100 psi. That should take no longer than 45 seconds. Also the park break activating itself it’s testing the spring break...not necessarily the park break. They actually made me state that I was testing the spring break and not the air break. Fantastic review though! They just made me specify both of those points.

Thanks for posting the link to the PDF. That will be very helpful as well. I just earned my CDL-B Learner's Permit with the passenger and school bus endorsements (air brake test also but it's not listed as an endorsement in MD) yesterday and now I can practice in a school bus. That pre-trip inspection will probably be the most difficult part but I intend to study it until I can do it without forgetting anything.

Yes this is a great video and even though I knew this video word by word I still failed my Cdl exam for the simple fact that DMV told me that when I read all of the gages I wasn’t supposed to mention any numbers when I was making sure that they were functioning properly. So my advice to anyone taking their Road test. Please make sure that you obtain a Commercial Driver License Manual from your local DMV and review the Pre Trip section that way you can be prepared to preform your pre trip inspection the way that your DMV requires you to. By the way I’m from New Jersey.

Therese Mileti, First hand, I want to thank you for sharing this AWESOME PRE-TRIP demonstration on KZfaq. It is intended for the CDL testing and it is by far the best I have seen. Hi, my name is Luis, I am state certified school bus instructor here in California. We get tested by CHP-California Highway Patrol. Our drive test includes a pre-trip inspection, skill test, defensive driving, turning point comprehension, student escort. And with that said, I did get some great ideas from your video. A huge thank you. I also have a channel here on KZfaq, you are welcome to comment. Share ideas. GOD BLESS

Luis, your lofty praise really made my day. Thank you! I'm very glad the video was thought provoking for you! I would be delighted to share ideas with you. In Ohio, the examiners here do not test us on turning point comprehension. I would like to hear more about that. Also could you share with me what student escort is? Thanks again for your comment and kind feedback! :) Therese
@schoolbus1014
@schoolbus1014 7 жыл бұрын
Therese Mimetic, great to see your reply. Our testing. Is the same in the fact that we must verbalize everything. Turning point comprehension is when making sharp, rounded, squared turns either to the left or right we must be able to explain to the testing officer what point or points we are using on the bus and the road to safely complete turns within 12 and 36 inches. That was a simple explanation,. I hope.. Now about Student Escort, this is huge in California. We escort all our pupils across the road. We must physically do a step by step procedure to activate our Amber lights, turn signal, Red lights, stop and distance from edge of curve, and so on. I can send you a copy of all this requirements in California just for your info. It is easy for us trainers, but for trainees having to do and verbalize is not. I want to say that by watching your videos I can sense that you have a lot of patience and that is needed when training individuals.

Lastly, the Air brake test. Your frustration is detailed. But in California, CHP requires school bus drivers to split the system and explain any detection of leakage and explain the components that could have an air leak. We also get tested on passenger management, proper use of emergency exits and to repair off we must operate our buses in the correct gear even flat surfaces. If your bus has an automatic transmission, you must still be in correct gear.

I took a student to be tested today and asked the supervisor of the examination station what the rules and guidelines are, regarding seatbelt usage and, if by not wearing a seatbelt, while performing your pre-trip inspection, would result in an automatic failure. He said, NO! When you are in a CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT, a seat belt is not required. It is also not required for your maneuvers, once again, because the maneuvers are performed in a controlled environment. This information is applicable in Ohio, as well as Indiana, and Kentucky. Please check with YOUR local testing facility to see what their requirements are regarding seatbelt usage. Once you pass maneuverability, and are ready leave the controlled environment, a seat belt must be worn.

Sekkzc, try not feel overwhelmed. The pretrip can seem quite overwhelming initially. A large portion of the pre-trip, however, is nothing more than repetitive phrasing. Repetition is key to learning the pre-trip. You've got this. :)

Great video. It may be a technicality, but before you do the brake bleeding test you say to put bus in neutral. Wouldn’t park be safer especially if not on level ground? Especially since after your brake tests you inspected the interior of the bus meaning the bus was still in neutral relying solely on the parking brake to keep bus from moving. Lastly, I prefer to test parking and service brake functionality after doing the bleed test. Doing the bleed test first establishes that the system can hold air and that there are no leaks in the system. Then check parking brake and then service brake functionality. Again maybe more of a technicality, but since everything else in your video was so thorough, thought you might be interested. Thanks for your time and great instructional video.

Thank you for your comment and feedback. There is no, park, setting on any of the busses in our fleet. Neutral is the equivalent of the park setting, combined with the parking brake. Contact your local examination station to find out if wheel chocks are required for your pre trip exam. I believe the sequence, to a degree, is preference based. As long as the emergency safety features of the air-brake tanks are done in sequence... No pressure, heavy pressure, and fanning the brakes for light, buzzer and spring brake features, the parking and service brake can be done before or after. You have a logical explanation as to why you prefer the service brake and parking brake tests to be preformed after bleeding the air tanks. Thanks again for sharing! Therese

front slack adjuster you don't need to chock the tires or release the parking break because the front does not have spring parking break. only need to release break and chock tires for rear spring break. but really good video .

Thank you for your comment and feedback, Joe. I was just going by the guidelines listed in the Ohio CDL manual. 5.3.2 - During Step 5 Walk-around Inspection Check Slack Adjusters on S-cam Brakes. Park on level ground and chock the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. Release the parking brakes so you can move the slack adjusters. Use gloves and pull hard on each slack adjuster that you can reach. If a slack adjuster moves more than about one inch where the push rod attaches to it, it probably needs adjustment. Adjust it or have it adjusted. Vehicles with too much brake slack can be very hard to stop. Out- of-adjustment brakes are the most common problem found in roadside inspections. Be safe. Check the slack adjusters.

So basically I want to make sure nothing is cracked, broken or damaged and there are no loose or missing parts? Seriously though, I heard some college kids invented a drinking game around the number of times you say that in this video. Good pretrip though

What about the turbo, the transmission dip stick, inspection sticker, air tanks, steering column, steering knuckle?? I was just recertified in Ohio and the above would have been lost points if not mentioned. You did an awesome job and still would have passed.

+patcande1 Thanks for the feedback and question, Pat. If I were recertifying for my district, or recertifying as an O.B.I, I would add those items to my pre-trip dialog. When I am training new drivers for taking their pre-trip exam, at the state facility where I am located , I eliminate the items that the state examiners are not requiring us to show or talk about, though I share those additional items with my trainees throughout the process. In addition to the items you mentioned, I would also add the upper and lower control arms, the allowable play in the steering wheel as well, the frequency the transmission fluids should be checked, and talk about the universal joints/knuckles on the drive shaft.

This was my very first video. The only reason I created the first one, was because my students never returned the CD’s I burned for them with the pre trip on it. I had no idea anyone else would even consider watching this let alone that I would create any additional material. Who knew. 😁

In my study guide, the "Gear Box" on the driver's side, (above the Pittman Arm), is labeled as a "steering box." Just wanted to verify. :)
