This engine was manufactured by BRUSH in 1981 for the Sri Lanka Railways and 16 such engines were introduced in the country. This engine is another special engine used in our train service. This is due to the fact that this M7 class engine is the lightest, longest and lightest diesel electric engine used for transportation on the railways in our country.
Manufacturer Brush Traction calls this M7 class engine a shunting engine. (Most likely this is due to the fact that in some countries, unlike in our country, shunting requires a considerable distance to run. In our country, shunting takes place over very short distances, mostly using Hunslet type 570hp engines. (Shown on the left.) However, in our country these engines are often used for office service trains, short distance passenger services etc. M7 engines can sometimes be used on freight trains and on long-distance trains when no other engine can be used. This M7 engine is also sometimes used for shunting.
Made to fit any road in Sri Lanka, these engines do not currently run normally except in emergencies on the upcountry road. I will present the facts). These engines can be run up to Nawalapitiya. (This is not normally used on upcountry roads due to the lack of power and the problem of dynamic brakes functionality, which is advantageous for uphill driving. Although the manufacturer has included the Dynamic brakes feature in the engine itself, some engines in the system may become inactive over time after being added to the drive. Dynamic brakes are often inoperable due to burnout.) It was also learned that these M7 engines can be driven on the Kelani Valley road but are not currently in operation. Apart from that I drive successfully on other roads.
Another special feature is that these locomotives were brought to Sri Lanka near the second voyage of Queen Elizabeth II and some claim that this type of engine was used for the train she traveled on but it has not been confirmed. There is also an opinion that an M6 engine was used. If anyone knows the correct information please write it down. Some of these M7 class engines were previously painted ICE color Livery (Intercity Color scheam - orange and red) and are now painted in the usual colors of green and red.
16 engines of this type were brought to Sri Lanka and only 15 of them are currently in operation. One engine had to be removed from service. This was due to a severe accident between Kadigamuwa and Rambukkana on December 5, 1999, which damaged the No. 803 engine beyond repair. After that accident, the department decided not to run these M7 engines on the upcountry route because of the issue with the Dynamic Brakes mentioned above in this article.
