Produced by the German company MAN Diesel, which supplied S3 power trains to Sri Lanka, the S4 power sets are powered by their own locomotive, made in Germany, as well as passenger compartments and rear drive compartments.
Five trains of this type were added to the country under USAID's financial assistance program, and the main difference between these S4 power sets and S3 type trains is that the power of these S4 trains is 1000 horsepower. This was due to the use of power engines with the technical feature known as superchargers at the time. Other features are similar to the S3, except for a few minor technical changes.
It is said that this train has been run up to Nanu Oya on the Mainline like the S3 train. This powerset may have been more powerful on the upcountry than the S3 train. In addition, these trains are also used for office passenger transport in Colombo and adjoining areas.
It is learned that due to the overheating of the engine during the importation of these trains, several additional air circulation windows have been installed in the engine compartments to provide better air circulation to the engine.
By the 1990s, however, all of these S4 power trains were completely out of service. Accordingly, the service life of these trains can be considered as a little over 25 years. At this time no train of this type has been seen or known to be left.
