This S9 joins the Sri Lanka DMU Corps 10 years after the deployment of the S8 train service. Categorized under the S9 running class, this train is a product of China. That is, the entire train set is made in China. This was the first time that a DMU made in China was imported to Sri Lanka. It will also be the first diesel-powered powertrain to replace the S1 powerset (All trains S2 - S8 use diesel hydraulic system.)
One set of DMU consists of an engine-driven compartment, an free engine-driving compartment and four passenger compartments, each with six compartments per train. The average length of a compartment is about 65 feet, so it can carry a large number of passengers at once. (It has been unofficially reported that in the early years 2000-2001 these trains were equipped with 7-compartment train sets.) .This is the first time after the S5 power trains that this facility has been provided. Also, the seats are similar to the S8 train, allowing more passengers to travel during peak hours.
Equipped with a control system that computerizes certain control processes, the power train is capable of accelerating considerably over short distances due to its high power. For these reasons, this type of train is mostly operated as office trains and slow trains, as well as during peak hours and short distance trains.
Following the importation of these trains, the Old Indian Good Shed between Maradana and Colombo Fort Railway Stations was renovated and a new Shed called the Electrical Power Coaches Shed (EPCS) was opened at the site. Normal maintenance of these S9 and S10 trains is done from the same track.
These trains run mostly on the Southern Line, Rambukkana on the main line, Mahawa on the Northern Line and the Puttalam Line. It is said that although several test runs were carried out on the Kelani Valley route in the early days of the introduction of this train, they failed due to the increase in the length of these compartments. However, the S8 compartments are also 65 feet long and run on the Kelani Valley road without any problems. Therefore, the problem with S9 kits may be that the space between the compartments is vestibuled, reducing the gap between the compartments and blocking the ability of passengers to turn at a greater angle.
Also, a test run has been conducted up to Kandy and these have been operated to Kandy as special trains several times during the perahera seasons. These trains have also run to Anuradhapura several times as special trains. Accordingly, these trains can run on other routes except the Matale line and the Kelani Valley road, the Peradeniya-Badulla section of the main road. However, there is no evidence that these were driven on the East Road.
