I honestly think that 610 was the largest single frame locomotive to operate in excursion service. Impressed it even could RUN on southern rails since it was so heavy!
@JCBro-yg8vd
@JCBro-yg8vd 4 жыл бұрын
That might have been why the Southern stopped using her, and started looking for other steam locomotives like the Royal Hudson and C&O 2716.
@flyaround5953
@flyaround5953 3 жыл бұрын
@@JCBro-yg8vd if I remember right it was because 610 was originally built to do freight so she was build with smaller diameter drivers and due to that she couldn’t get up to the high speeds the southern wanted for their excursion trains
@JCBro-yg8vd
@JCBro-yg8vd 3 жыл бұрын
@@flyaround5953 Yes. And they also had trouble finding wys to turn her around on (I assume she was too heavy or too wide for a turntable). So after 1978, the Southern began using her less and less. And in 1981 she was sold back to her original owner and was retired a year later by the UP (which now owned the tracks formerly belonging to the T&P).

It's fantastic to know that some of these engines are back in service today. 630, 4501 & 611. Best of all for me the Kentucky steam heritage corporation are leasing the C&O/ "Southern" 2716 from the KRM IF they get the funds raised for her restoration, shop, maintenance and equipment,etc. They say the engine is sound condition for another overhaul to service and hope to begin it next year 2017 and want to have her ready to go by the year 2020 running trips out of Lexington, KY.

Imagine if BNSF ran a steam program? They’re the second largest railway in America so there would be A LOT of steam engines on display along their track. For example NP 2156.

BNSF has allowed steam locomotives until recently, due to an unfortunate situation at Amtrak (the policies of Amtrak President, CEO, and Chairman, Mr. Richard H. Anderson.) The steam locomotives that have run on the BNSF have included SP&S 4-8-4 # 700, SP 4-8-4 # 4449, UP 4-8-4 # 844, AT&SF 4-8-4 # 3751, MILW 4-8-4 # 261, and soon to be AT&SF 4-8-4 # 2926, among a few others over the years.

Ah on the mention of saluta, if its ever brought back into service, they ought to restore on of the allegany class and give it 30 cars or so and let her have at it, or bring over 4014 and let her have at it once she is restored, the nasty grade gave even the biggest engines a fight, in fact in raw power it would take at least two modern diesles to equal one of the biggest of the late steam period engines at just over 4300 hp per unit from ge, though two would be more then the power of a bigboy I bet she could still give two alone a run for the money in raw power once she comes back to life at 2019 as planned, just saying. would be nice to see, and its neat to see some footage of the N&W 611 which they are also trying to restore but fundraising right now for facillities to do so.
