Classic Banger Racing early 70's Ipswich.
Camera crew follow a Ford Pop on its journey to a banger race. This was when these cars were 10 a penny! The previous lady owner gets interviewed about the cars history, unaware of its fate. I taped this off the television back in the early 90's. I havnt got a clue what it's called or any information about it so if you do please let me know.

I wonder what the rules were like back then. I didn't see any 'A' frames, roll cages or steam tanks in use. No deliberate wrecking or follow-ins either. It was a genuine race.

I am not letting that man near my classic car! Smashing windows, yanking the headlights off with a crowbar.

This is not typical of a banger in the seventies. Any regular driver would not race an old side valve 100E, Too slow. Cambridges by the hundreds were the favored steeds. Fast enough and mighty strong. A car would normally last one meeting, it was a real bonus to get two meetings out of it. Most bangers cost a tenner but sometimes for free but worth nothing at the end unless your really lucky and got a couple of quid for it. The rules were basic `try not to hit the drivers door` And any mechanic worth his salt NEVER broke any windows. Its so much simpler if they are in tact. We would prepare and race up to three cars a week, Wednesday at Arlington, Thursday at Aldershot (old track) and Saturday at Wimbldon. Also raced Cross in Hand, Ringwood. Lydon Hill and Billingshurst. BTW I raced for 18 years with Spedeworth. 1969 to 1987

I noticed in the credits that the cameraman was Hugh Miles. He went on to be a successful wildlife film maker and with a particular interest in fishing. His Passion for Angling series is one of the best of its kind - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Miles_(filmmaker)

I remember the first time that this was on in the early '70s. I think that it was on BBC 'Nationwide'. For some reason it stuck in my mind.

I remember seeing it at the time. It was around 74/75. At the time it looked fun but now it's like watching people throwing wads of cash on a bonfire! That PA Vauxhall in the guys yard would be worth at least ten grand today! I somehow don't think we'll be getting nostalgic over a Nissan almira in forty years time.

I remember the 1970s banger racing at Harringay with Tiger Bill Smith, Ronnie Martin and John Plummer. Austin Cambridges, Wolsey 1550s, Ford Consul mark 2's, and Zephyr mark 3's were most popular. Ford Pops, Morris Minors, Wolesey 1500s were too small and didn't last many races. I'll never forget a driver called Jim Eaves - I'm sure he entered a race in a Jag 420! - it was 1977.

I went there a few times around 1977. Just passed my test at 17 and anything car related was an attraction, even the auctions. As you say, mostly Cambridges and similar sized Fords.

Such a shame to destroy such classics, I wonder how cheap they were by the 70’s for them to be used as stock banger racers??

Not a shame they were rusty heaps of unreliable junk not worth a penny. back in the day people who made starter motors and batteries made a fortune, all i would see in the cold mornings would be people towing or pushing their cars to try and start them. Good riddens thats what i think.

I remember many of these cars in the seventies but most were pretty rotten after 8/9 years. Having said that they could usually be fixed with a 1/2 inch spanner and a screwdriver! Try doing that with the computerized plastic crap today. Imo the best decade for reliability was the nineties. After that cars just became ridiculously complicated and not particularly driver friendly.
