The writer was a chap called Louis Marks, who wrote four Doctor Who stories all told. The 1970s Target book "The Making Of Doctor Who" (loved that book when I was a child!) says that Louis Marks had written an intelligent piece on time travelling guerillas and, yes, the BBC wanted the Daleks back for a big season opener. They forced Marks to rewrite it to include the Daleks which was never in the original script. Also, with the exception of Dennis Spooner cowriting the less than successful Dalek Master Plan in Troughton's era, this was the first time that another writer (unwillingly) wrote a Dalek story from scratch. They also had a distinct lack of Dalek props at the time...THREE! Quite noticeable. I loved the story and remember the story's debut as a child. One other bit of trivia, the scene where the Doctor and Jo meet themselves was meant to be mirrored as the final scene of the show, but they ran out of time. This version was retained in the Target novelisation.

I have read the Dsleks were always intended to come back in season 9 but in a different story called Daleks in London but it was decided to shoehorn the Daleks into this story instead and thus scrap Daleks in London and replace it with a new story the Time Monster instead

The daleks were in fact shoehorned into this story. The time travel story was good, the daleks were okay. Overall, an alright story.

The daleks was going to in the season finally in a story called Daleks In London. But the producers got the written to accommodate the daleks in this story and the original story for season was changed to the time monster

I like Day of the Daleks

I had the exact same reaction to Jo Grant.

I see classic who wildly out of order which is probably why I never enjoyed any season 8 story that much due to Jo Grant being a lot weaker in season 8 compared to other Jon Pertwee seasons.

I like this story! Not one of my favourites, but I wouldn't mind rewatching it.

I felt the same way about Jo. When she was intrigued du kinda liked her but became just A companion and a weak one. Never understood the hype but from season 9 onwards they were using her in a better way and she grew on me

I'm watching 1 a week a daleks story 2 countdown to revolution of the Daleks tonight I'm at the 9th doctor and when I watch The Day of the Daleks I didn't think it was any good it was a bad episode

Although this isn't a great story, I think the updated effects and voices really improve it

By season 9 I was quiet over Unit tbh.. 😂

Personally I find this story really weak and underwhelming. There’s some good ideas but the execution is really poor. 5/10
