Travel back in time to the 1967 season when the NHRA ran the final event of the season at Tulsa International Raceway in Oklahoma. In this video sponsored by the FRAM Corporation, you will see a broadcast hosted by Brock Yates and Don Garlits.
On a day when Mother Nature threatened to intervene, Bennie Osborn's unforeseen rise to the most important win in drag racing came right on the heels of his victory at the Atlanta $10,000 meet.
You'll see plenty of old-school Top Fuel and some Super Stock. You'll even see some cool interviews.
Be sure to download the CompetitionPlus.com mobile app; it's a free download at the Apple Store or Google Play.

We were at that event! The rain came down just minutes after Prudhomme's thumping by local hero Bennie Osborn.

Big thumbs up to competion plus for the iconic footage of not only the races but the drivers who were my heroes as 8yr old kid and up until recently, were only photgraphs etched in my memory. Now they have come to life thanks to these films. Seeing and hearing the late great Pete Robinson and Steve Carbone was cool. Sad and sombering to know that approx. 3yrs later at Pomona "Sneaky" Pete would lose his life when his front tire blew going through the traps. He had been experimenting with a ground effects device that put a lot of down force on the car but also strain on the chassis and ultimately the tires. Steve Carbone is also gone. He is one of the handful of drivers/owners who was one of the last of the hold outs continuing to run a slingshot when the tide was turning to the new rear engine rail that Garlits perfected. He goes down as giving the slingshot its last hurrah at the 1971 winternationals in the infamous burn down staging event. Both cars built up so much heat/power that when Buster Couch insisted they stage and activate the tree the lights flashed green and Carbone was gone while Garlits went up in smoke. Good seeing them in they're heyday. Gone but not forgotten....R.I.P. to them both

When I was little the racers were the thing. This footage makes clear that transport/ tow vehicles and especially the station wagon and pickup pushcars are the real gems.

My brother bought a semi pro street 63 plymouth valiant from Ed Miller last year 2022. Ed built this car for himself then the car sat for a while. My brother bought the car and drove it from the east coast to the west coast Road Kill style. lots of leaks, overheating and tire issues, but he made it.

The old 392 FirePower was tough to beat. The 427 SOHC's ( and 426 Mopars ) all lost that day to an engine design from the late 1940's. And that was typical back in the day ( stock engine versus stock engine basically ). Ed Donovan felt that the old engine was a much better design .

The " FirePower " engine series just wasn't wasn't " discontinued " it was burned to the ground ( drawings , tooling , everything trashed ) after 1958. Later cars show signs of prep for the width of the engine ( the specifics elude me at the moment ) , but it made no sense at all to drop it like it was. It was the most powerful engine in the 1950's and in the 1960's on Nitro. I know that Ford or Merc. had some forgotten pos that was bigger and rated at higher octane that beat it out in 1958 ( a forgotten engine that didn't win anything ). The FirePower would raise hell into the 1980's ( perhaps as a " Donovan " ) . Hats off to the engineers of the day , strong - ass engine .

Too bad they did not have actual video footage of the Top Fuel cars being push started so these kids from the younger Generations can see how they were started in the beginning

I appreciate the video, but what an absolute shame for the other 5 winners that were not shown at all including my family Top Gas Gordon Collett Competition Eliminator Peter "Chico" Breschini Super Eliminator Joe Davis ( Davis & Ingram's Jewel "T") Stock Eliminator George Cureton Street Eliminator Gordon Matney A little bit like today's coverage of NHRA events...they only show the high profile classes and not the real backbone of the sport. don't get me wrong, i like those classes too but it's nice to see the mom and pop operations as well
