@@TKsMantis I have played and finished the original Fallout on a retro handheld, the RG35XX-H, and I can attest to its playability. The only criticism I had of playing it on that was the lack of a physical numpad, you had to hold down the arrow buttons if you wanted to give a specific amount of caps for bartering and it was slow but that was it. The experience was so much fun and fully playable with little issue.

I think revamping the combat system would be a huge improvement but the pixel art and sprite work are what helped make the game so memorable. The first time you get toasted by a flammer and dance off stage just to fade into your bones in the desert left an impression that ragdolling in a modern game can never do.

@@martyfromnebraska1045 wow, way to assume stuff. Classic fallout is a very different experience, yes, but it's not necessarily a 'better' one, there's stuff that modern games do that older ones just can't, and there's nothing inherently wrong with wishing for that.

No. Todd is never correct. Remasters, or remakes both can be great, even if the original may be the best. A modern remake of FO1 would be neat because the game is so old, and it could use modern buttons, interface, etc. A modern remaster would also be fun, because although a top down version will always be best, FO1 or FO2 running in 3d modern engine would be fun, *if done well* . Regardless, blindly saying remasters or remakes dont belong is delusional, based either in rose-tinted nostalgia that only the original version matters , or modern pessimistism that it's not worth the effort. Old and new fans would pay and enjoy FO1, or FO2 re-done to whatever scale. The problem is fans dont want the new game in bethesda's dated 2022 morrowind engine however, or developed by modern bethesda developers. Again, Todd isnt right. If yorue agreeing with the corporate executives then you probably lost the plot. Final point, Todd Howard doesnt want any remakes or remasters because FO1 and FO2 in an actual modern engine would make the modern Fallout games look like trash, and make their writers look extremely lacking. Also, all the normies would see bethesda has just been copying homework for the last 20 years instead of innovating like they used to. Dont agree with Todd, that's bad mmmmkay. I will agree with TK's one point, modders do it better anyways so who needs an official corporate ripoff release.

I think the graphics should be the last thought if they were to remaster. It might just be personal taste but I think that the graphics are great and still hold up, pretty much all 2D games age well. Maybe just an update to the UI to scale better with modern hardware, and making controls less clunky for new players, maybe an in-game guide too. But that probably wouldn't sell because it's not really a 'remaster' just an update to an old game.

Baldurs gate 3 was quite a far cry from the original 2, not in a bad way mind you, it’s still one of the best RPGs to come out within recent memory. However it was quite a departure from ogs and their expansions in both tone, and gameplay. However BG3’s success shows that there’s absolutely an audience for a classic top down turned based fallout with a heavy emphasis on RPG elements. Will it ever happen? Absolutely not but it’s nice to think about regardless.

I'm just playing through the original fallout for the first time. I was only 1 when the first game came out and fallout 3 like most people was my introduction to the fallout universe. Although the game doesn't hold your hand and tell you where to go plus the controls and UI being a little confusing to the zoomer mind, it's still such an awesome experience. I think it's cool I have to figure out what I'm doing based on the dialogue npcs say to me and how that leads to me getting lost in the world trying to find my objective talking to different people along the way to find clues. It feels so much more like what a real RPG experience is supposed to feel like instead of just having your pip boy tell you everything and a marker guiding you to your objective. I Definitely recommend people give the older games a try cause there is so much charm there. That being said I still would love to see these games modernized, but given the state of the gaming industry maybe it's a good thing they aren't.

Along with the Quake 1 & 2 remaster patches and Nightdive studios Remasters, it's shown that a remaster can be both a preservation of the original and the innovations of more contemporary quality of life changes. Look at all that screen real-estate to fit in with more conveniences, like a drop-down/pop-up inventory, a counter for how much caps you have, a calculator instead of a linear scroll for how much to drop/give/take item, displaying both held weapons at once instead of pressing the red button to switch, dialogues having flavor text to define their meaning, the ability to skip UI transitions, more variations for the sprites to better reflect the characters equipped gear, ability to give your companions like Dogmeat specific commands, a quick-use button on the HUD that uses the equivalent amount of AP and ALL of this being optional with the option to play the original version instead. I CANNOT fathom what the downside to be to offer a optional updated version that takes away nothing with ever addition, including the version being optional.

I recently got into the classic fallouts after being a fan for almost a decade and man… it would destroy those games to have them funneled into a fallout 4 template. The score, the atmosphere, the gameplay, all has this eerie and unsettling edge to it. It really feels like a wasteland, its tone is perfectly set and balanced. The dialogue scenes are something I’ve never experienced before, and have so much character. Newer installations in the series are not necessarily worse, but they are not Fallout in the way Fallout was. If there were anything to remaster, I’d say new Vegas is a great candidate. It’s the perfect in between of interplay fallout and Bethesda fallout, and therefore can kind of match the flow of either.

Even good remakes run the risk of helping to erase the medium's history, or at least steer players away from understanding it. The less the audience knows the history, the more that game design and aesthetics become an echo chamber, with everyone in the industry drawing from the same five years of inspirations.

Todd is absolutely right. Fallout 97 is a work of art and still looks great. You don’t remake the Lascaux Cave Paintings or The Sistine Chapel for “modern audiences” and you shouldn’t for Fallout either. Now if fans want to reimagine the game by making 3d mods ect… I think that is great. Other artists reinterpreting art is great but no official remakes should be made by the Bethesda.

I'm 15 at this time commenting this and I put 100 hours into the first game and I love it, The game's weapons in terms on diverse variety and balance determines what skill perk and level you are. Also on how they get op the further you get and to take time using your skill perks wisely. Like the plasma rifle for example when I finally equipped the plasma rifle from the glow after save and after save and a realised I needed between 6 strength or over to use depending if u chose an agility build which I did, so I returned to the brotherhood handed them the tape from the dead brotherhood soldier and invested my caps to their doctor for enough strength but to top it off still was extremely difficult to handle cuz I didn't deposit enough skill points to the energy weapon skill which made me tend to miss more at the military base, so I did some jobs in the hub like caravan guarding and the mission on where u save the brotherhood guy where I invested enough on the perk and later got hardened power armor. This game really proves to me that remasters don't reimagine the charm and joy you have on the previous game their trying to recapture and create. One of these examples is that the first game displayed one of if not the best skill building software I have ever seen in a game like its that good. Overall good game would highly recommend if your into these kind of games 👍

I loved all the Black Isle games but probably played more Baldurs Gate than Fallout at the time. My feelings on remaking these old classics: My sons were playing games at the time they were fresh and new. Even so, FO and TES never came into the house, for whatever reason. As very, very busy freelancer, I didn't get into gaming until about 2011 (except for Myst and Riven). Even back in 2011, I had a lot of trouble keeping FO3 running and rarely got far, and still haven't. Oblivion was my first TES game and FONV my true first FO game. Even then, my computer was t a bit too advanced to play them w/o help. So I think remaking these games could open them for new young players who wouldn't be able to play such old games, and it would allow me to finally experience the entire franchises instead of relying on videos to learn the whole stories.

I don't think a full genre changing remake would benefit the games, but I do think Classic Fallout could really use an Enhanced/Extended Edition style re-release with proper compatibility, quality of life and accessibility features, along with options to restore the cut content that modders have been putting back into the game for decades now. I'm not completely unfamiliar with old school CRPGs, but I still find the old Fallout games' UI clunky as hell and the stat/difficulty balance not particularly fun to get used to. They're great games, don't get me wrong, but I think they're really starting to feel their age and just a few minor to moderate tweaks with customizable options would do a lot to keep them relevant and, ultimately, playable.

Hi Mantis , First off all i just kinda shocked that you also first time experiencing Fallout , in your friend's house and your friends older brother playing Fallout 2 and you experienced with this game like that , interesting thing that i also experienced just like almost you did , it was late 98's , me and my brother visited our uncle back then and our cousin who is older than us playing Fallout 2 in his pc . ( What a interesting coincidence , i just would like to mention that nothing at all :) ) I think most of classic Fallout fans might be agree on that if Bethesda decides to make remastering of these first 2 games and if they decide to hire original developers to make this Project happen , i think we most likely positive about in this situation . Other than that i'm most likely agree on that if Bethesda itself decides to make remastering on these games by itself ,well i don't prefer that . But as for the scenario if Tim Cain , Leonard Boyarsky and most of the other original developers and writers involves into this project , i just would like to share my personal thoughts about it . If this thing happen ; 1) Playing Classic Fallout Games with better graphics and also getting the same environment possibly good think to play these games again . 2) Making a remastered version of this game probably is going to get attention of the younger generations , soo the frenchise itself is going to be more popular than in it's original form right now and new players might have get one of their first experience on the game with non linear playthrough , decision making system , character creation effects your gameplay , reputation system and it's effects your environment . 3) Probably this remastering will give their original developers much more bigger reputation and personally would like to make that happen , because those people made this game with incredibly low budget and thinking that they looked like underappriciated , maybe in this version they will get their true reputation . 4) Tim Cain also mentioned in his youtube channel that he may thinking of adding some of the cut content features and also some of the other user friendly features to make this game more enjoyable to play . 5) Esspecially on Fallout 2 , right after Fallout 1 released couple of months later Tim Cain , Leonard Boyarsky and some other develeopers decide to quit interplay , because of that some of the Fallout 2 features in this game did by other develepers . Maybe with serious discussion with Tim Cain and also developers with Fallout 2 games make some dicussion about this story and maybe decide to go on some path on story that both of the sides agree into and make this game's story in it's improved version . ( My personal opinion and i think most of us might be agree on that Fallout 1 's story is better than Fallout 2 story , but on other hand Fallout 2 is much bigger and have much more features than Fallout 1that might conflicts from people that which one is better :) personally both of them are my greatest games all time for me )

I think a big part of 1 and 2 that wouldn’t quite translate well is the atmosphere. I think the reason Todd doesn't want Fallout 1 and 2 remade is because he has nostalgia like we do, the games do exactly what they're meant to do and bring the series further without any work on Todd's part. He might also feel that kind of reverence with those games like we do, and feels like touching it would invalidate his feelings as to why he likes those games. I feel the same way with Fo3, Oblivion, New Vegas, while it'd be nice to have a more modern version of these games, I don't think there's any need to.

It's important to understand that, while these games were huge worlds in their day with lots of quests and stories, the limitations of media storage at the time means they're not as big and expansive as modern games they'd be competing with. On the subject of Remaster/Remakes in general, I sorta agree. I also think that there is a trend of just remaking things endlessly instead of getting new ideas. However I think remasters/Remakes of old games are good, but I don't think every beloved game needs it. Some games have aged very well in my opinion, the classic Fallouts for example at least on modern PCs are very playable, IIRC you only really need to fiddle with the resolution, maybe get a mod for the UI scaling, and probably the Restoration Mod for the second game. All that would really be needed is to include those things and maybe a little tweaking to better support modern hardware. I honestly would much rather see a Remaster/Remake/Overhaul update to Fallout 3 which while I enjoyed (I know, I am in a minority) has aged very poorly in gameplay, it was actually felt good when it came out but going back now it is rough. I would love to see an official release of some kind at least bringing up to Fallout NVs gameplay standard if not 4.

Yes, from my experience, the classic Fallout games run perfect on modern systems. Fallout Tactics has some trouble with high FPS, but you can figure out a fix for that easy. No download required.

Don’t let Todd do it but The reasons I’d enjoy a remake of the original fallout is the same as why I’d enjoy a remake of planescape torment (perhaps in the style of baldurs gate 3.) The UI and combat require attentive play to fully understand and could be made more intuitive and accessible. I also personally would love a fully voiced script to accommodate my goopy goblin gamer brain. Also the text boxes that allow you to type whatever you want to specific npcs I’ve never been able to get any proper use out of. I’d much prefer if those were just a list of proper dialogue options.

I think the classic fallout games could and should get a port. Mobile, consoles, etc. But no, Todd says that he wants to focus on new stuff, not on redoing their old stuff. I think the only thing Todd should do is make sure that the games can be run on modern hardware. That's it, no more, no less.

I am in a different camp on this than you. I want someone like Larian to remake Fallout and Fallout 2 in a modern engine and with the cut content restored. As much as I love Fallout 2 (it's my favorite game of all time), I hate the inability to pan the camera to see what is being blocked by the damn walls. A better UI would be divine, and I would love to have ultra-widescreen monitor support. I have yet to see a mod that can address these 3 issues.

There's just something charming about the first two fallout titles: the isometric, ambience (tone and soundtrack), and the talking heads. Then it reminded of two games inspired by this such as Fallout Sonora and Nevada. It has its unique experience that'd be not as charming when remake into 3d fallout.

It's the kind of thing where, sure, it doesn't NEED it since the game works fine as-is and there's plenty of mods to spice things up (though FO1 and 2 deserve way more modding love imo), but it's something I love and don't think would really be degraded by being done in the Fallout 4 engine or whatever. Fallout 3 and 4's problems were almost purely the writing department's fault. So long as they just transfer over the stories all the stuff they could actually screw up is basically done. Just create the new assets, shove it all into its new fancy 3D box, and ship it. Maybe fill it out with a mountain of new side quests, weapons/armors/etc and a better follower system.

Of course it doesn't need a remake, but a remaster or re-release would be great for making it run better on modern hardware, the last time I tried to play this game on Windows 10 on an 1440p monitor the text was so small I couldn't even read it

1 and 2 are archaic, ancient, and hard to get into from a modern perspective, but with how few and far between Fallout games have gotten the absolute last thing I want them to do is to divert resources from new installments (both Fallout and Elder Scrolls) to retread ground already covered. We're likely going to see 15+ year gaps between major installments going forward barring Bethesda expanding, I don't want that gap filled with an remake, tbqh.

I think the biggest thing that gets missed is that having a team work on the classic Fallout games is exactly the type of thing you would want a group of young developers led by a small senior development team to work on. Even, as people have said, having a team together to work on porting it to consoles and making it more UI and controller friendly would be a huge deal. It's not JUST a perk for fans, but for young developers who, right now, need all the help they can get.

Even IF they were to do a fallout 1/2 remake The problem would be HOW they are gonna do it. The main issue would be the map/world space because classic fallout has the world map that is basically "click here and you will walk over there" So would they make the map just like that? And just put loading screens every 2 seconds? Or will they make it a full blown 1 to 1 scale of the map and just let you walk in any direction you want. Personally it would be cool HOWEVER and this is mostly a problem with fallout 1..... 90% of the map is desert with nothing for miles, sure there are areas like the boneyard, the hub and the glow that would be cool if they were expanded and fully explorable thats still not gunna be a good idea bc the map would still completely be empty although the fast travel can fix this issue I believe that fast travel would kind of ruin the game because at that point there just would be no reason to go walk across the desert anymore unless for random encounters. Now fallout 2 would not have these issues because of it having way more areas that could be expanded on like new reno, arroyo, navarro, the glow, the oil rig, etc. Also walking though the desert wouldnt be as bad because the highwayman exists and that would give players reason to go out there Also most importantly the people who would buy theese remakes are gunna be die hard fans and newcomers and lets be honest these games would probobly be review bombed by newer fans for not being as "full of content" as the other games like 4 and 76 Also would theese games be bundled together? Or sold as separete games? (Knowing bethesda they would probobly be separete $60 or $40 games) Tldr; there are many ways theese remakes could go in and they would most likely be torn to shreds by reviewers. I think todd is right on not making any classic fallout remakes.

They don't need remasters/remakes. Though they need updated/ported/fixed still. Some modders have made the PC version of New Vegas super stable, but honestly those fixes are more like bandaids, not real fixes. Fallout 3 and NV are not made to run on modern hardware and boy does it show.

well said Todd, well said. The old games are best as the way they are. It should be the way it is. A lot of the things from fallout 4 and 76 and even starfield you would only get it if you have played fallout 2 or jagged alliance 2 and such. like in fallout 1, because there wasn't a 'push' button to push away your NPC followers who blocks your way, I lost my entire end game save because one of my guy blocks the way in between me and the master, I don't want to kill the NPC, and my last save was like 2 or 3 hours of progress before that point. Only when you understand this and played new vegas, fallout 4, starfield you will realize, alright, the line of product will always have this issue. That's why before I even pre-ordered starfield, I know exactly what I'm walking into. those kids who compare star citizen with starfield don't even have an idea of what is a RPG and what is a simulator. Classics should always be the way they were. They were designed based on old tech and old hardware, they were optimised in a way under certain condition. experience THAT was part of the game.
