@@daveyhouston Actually it influenced the Beatles who followed it with Stg. Pepper’s. I’m sure the Stones appreciated it, but the Beatles and The Beach Boys influenced each other in the mid 60s. The Stones were more influenced by the blues.

@newagain9964 I get that way. Though I do like a bunch more Rolling Stones songs, everyone that I have learned to play or want to learn, Keith sings, haha. Very different voice and ability to Carl Wilson, of course, but Keith’s vocals get me way way more than Mick’s.

It's a beautiful song and Pet Sounds a masterpiece, However the lyric is actually quite dark and brooding the song is about obsession in love. It captures a youth's view of love being overtly possessive. It describe how deep his love for her is and that he doesn't know what he would do should she ever decide to leave him. He then goes on to describe how if she left him his life would not be worth living.

This is from Wikipedia, about the song "God Only Knows." The session musicians referred to here were known as "The Wrecking Crew," an insanely talented group of musicians who played on hundreds of hit records in the 1960s and '70s. "Wilson produced the record between March and April 1966, enlisting about 20 session musicians who variously played drums, sleigh bells, plastic orange juice cups, clarinets, flutes, strings, French horn, accordion, guitars, upright bass, harpsichord, and a tack piano with its strings taped. His brother Carl Wilson sang lead, a vocal performance that became regarded as Carl's best ever, with Brian himself and Bruce Johnston providing additional harmonies. The song ends with a series of repeating vocal rounds, another device that was uncommon for popular music of the era."

The Beatles and The Beach Boys inspired each to a great extent. Brian Wilson heard the Beatles album Rubber Soul and was so blown away that the Beach Boys countered with the Album Pet Sounds which in turn influenced John and Paul to come up with Sgt Pepper. Their friendly rivalry gave the world some fantastic music which is still so relevant today

Paul McCartney said this was the most beautiful love song ever written. Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson were inspiration for each other. This came off of the Beach Boys Pet Sounds album, which inspired the Beatles to record St. Peppers. Yes! For someone like Brian, who has had depression issues since before then, I agree 100%! I was born in 1958, and have had "issues" for as long as I can remember. At age 6, how do you know if you have "issues?" I can relate with In My Room, from way back then. Saw The Brian Wilson Band this June. If the beach boys were still The Beach Boys, THAT would have been a Bucket List item. Brian's band was and still is! The least said about Hateful Mikey's WEAK band, the better! (Chicago was the second half of the show. ANOTHER Bucket List item!) I miss Carl Dean Wilson every day! steve

THE BEACH BOYS: GOD ONLY KNOWS: When I hear the ending of this song I imagine first The Beach Boys are in a line like a conga dance and then on round stage slowly spinning them around. My favorite Beach Boys song! This is on the intro to a HBO show called: Big Love with Bill Paxton, Jeanne Triplehorn, Chloe Sevigny, and Ginnifer Goodwin!

The Beatles were floored, inspired, and Motivated by this album to create Sgt. Peppers . Paul McCartney famously called it, "The Greatest Song Ever Written" . Lennon and McCartney heard this at a party and wrote "here, there, and Everywhere" the same night.

This is considered by many to be one of their best songs written by Brian Wilson. It was recorded in 1966 on their masterpiece album Pet Sounds. Some say this is Paul McCartney's favorite song. I think they used something like 20 musicians to play all kinds of instruments to give it such a beautiful full sound.

Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B, Little Deuce Coupe, Surfin' Safari, California Girls, and Barbara Ann are all great Beach Boys tunes. If you react to entire albums, Pet Sounds is up there in terms of the pantheon of best albums. I also recommend the movie Love & Mercy about Brian Wilson's life.

This song came from the album "Pet Sounds" (1966), which marked a major change in their sound and style; a lot more harmonious and melodic and, as you pointed out, greater lyrical depth. Another great song from this album is "Wouldn't It Be Nice." Some earlier hits that showcase their harmonies include "In My Room" and "Don't Worry Baby."

Such a great great song. The movie “Love Actually” beautifully utilizes it over the beginning and end of the movie, showing hundreds of people-families, couples, friends, people of all races, ages-embracing and reuniting at the airport. So touching and ethereal. Perhaps Brian Wilson’s finest musical achievement. About as perfect a song as can be, with its Wall-of-Sound and Wrecking Crew vibe, beautiful harmonies and perfect lyrics. Not sure if this was said yet, but when the Beach Boys record company first heard this song, they were worried about how it would sell because this was the first pop song that had the word "God" in the title. As we know, it was no problem at all. It just worked. What a genius Brian was.

Carl Wilson is the lead singer on this one - the voice of an angel. He is pictured on the far left in this video. "Sloop John B", "Sail On, Sailor," "Til I Die" "Heroes and Villains," "In My Room" are all amazing Beach Boys songs that stray away from the more surfing vibes.

Amber, you're completely on point with this song having a different emotional tone than early and 'typical' Beach Boys. This whole album, Pet Sounds, has a strong undercurrent of sadness and melancholy.

What new generations don't know is that their father of Brian Wilson was a manipulator and control freak and the group had to fire him because he was causing a lot of problems for the group to write and play their music as the way they want to bring to the audience. It is sad when parents get involved in their adult children music which they know what to expect from their own group. So they had a tough time during the early period.

One of the most touching, beautiful songs ever written, imo. Brian Wilson's flair for melody, harmony, arrangement and studio innovation was both nearly unmatched and deeply influential, helped transform music through his inspiration on the Beatles and so many others. 'Feel Flows' - kinda psychedelic, even "Beatle-esque." Check it out.

Did y’all inadvertently figure out the mystery behind the album’s name, maybe? When Amber says these songs feature new and different sounds than previous Beach Boys work. It made me think, when they were planning the direction, perhaps someone, Brain?, said “let’s achieve something unique. What are some “Pet Sounds” we want to hear?” Then, Carl said “well, I certainly would like some glockenspiel on some thing!” And Dennis: “I’m really partial to the flugelhorn.” And the Pet Sounds album name was born?

Brian Wilson was the primary songwriter for The Beach Boys. He suffered a nervous breakdown during the 1964 US Tour (he was replaced temporarily by Glen Campbell while he recovered, but Brian Wilson remained a member of the group in the recording studio, and would no longer perform on tour). Wilson felt enormous pressure to try to compete musically with The Beatles, to fight back against their relentless domination of the US music charts during the 1960s. In 1966, The Beach Boys released their album, "Pet Sounds", that most music critics regard as their best album. The Beatles responded with "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in 1967. Brian Wilson's mental health and drug addiction issues continued to plague him for many years, and he was fired from the group in 1982.

The name of this song's album is Pet Sounds and it incorporates a lot of animal sounds. A suggestion for your other channel is the movie Love and mercy about brian wilson, very good movie.

My 45 of "God Only Knows" appeared as the B-side (other A-side if you will) of "Wouldn't It Be Nice." Looking at the various releases on Discogs releases, some variations occurred in other countries. But my U.S. Capitol single from 1966 had "Wouldn't It Be Nice" as the A-side (peaked @ #8/ 11 weeks on chart) and a couple weeks later "God Only Knows" was also charted and peaked at #39! / 8 weeks on the chart)! Such an injustice. One of the greatest Brian Wilson/Tony Asher (lyrics) songs. The lead singer was Brian Wilson's brother Carl, the guy in the back row on the far left. Both Carl (1946 - 1998/ only 51) and the 3rd Wilson brother, Dennis Wilson (front row on left/ 1944 - 1983/ only 39/ drowning accident) passed away way too young

Great song written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher. Sung by the late Carl Wilson, Brian's brother.. The Pet Sounds album is one of the best ever made. Brian Wilson is a genius.

The 1966 Pet Sounds album is a masterpiece. Brian has grown so much and now created this music with the Wrecking Crew (professional musians in LA) handling all the instruments and layering in the vocals after the music was done. It ranks with Sargent Peppers as one of the best albums ever created.

I love men’s collective voices and harmonies, and The Beach Boys are a stellar example of that. I have a list of songs that make me smile, and “Good Vibrations” is near the top of that list.

I graduated high school the year you were born....I TOO was raised on them (older sisters)....just shows the longevity of their music! And I have to agree with the others.......sometimes Mike Love might have Brian Johnston or even Al Jardine with him.....but it's passed time to retire the name....and let it rest with some dignity!

The Beach Boys used to pray before every performance, a lot of the Bass and background instrumentation were done by the 'Wrecking Crew' in LA :) Carol Kaye was a Bass guru! Watch the videos about the Wrecking Crew!

You can find a video on the recording of this song, and hear all the different takes with the Wrecking Crew, and all the prep and arranging in between. The Wrecking Crew were studio musicians in LA who did the actual instruments for thousands of songs for many artists. The Beach Boys came in and just added their voices afterward.

One of the greatest love songs and most imaginative songs of all times. The dichotomy of the lyrics is that we may not always be together, but if we aren't then there is no reason to go on because we are perfect together. I love hearing the sleigh bells in the background too.

The top of my favorite Beach Boys ballads, it makes me cry everytime I hear it for very personal reasons. Carl Wilson sings lead here (the one on the left in the back row as you look at the screen), who has already passed away, along with Dennis Wilson, who passed before Carl (Dennis is the one on the left front row). A few years back I attended the Beach Boys 50th anniversary concert with all the original members, except for Carl and Dennis who were already deceased. But it was SOOOOO touching and emotional, when they performed "God Only Knows." The screen behind them had a video of Carl singing it, as the rest of the Beach Boys sang the other parts live on stage, along with the video of Carl. It was SO beautiful. that concert was one of the BEST ones I have ever attended. Paul McCartney in his current tour, did the SAME thing when performing "I've Got a Feeling" which is one that he and John Lennon sang together live on the rooftop of Apple in 1969. Peter Jackson who did the "GET BACK" Film for the Disney Channel, contacted Paul and said he could isolate John from the rooftop concert while he was singing HIS part, so Paul could sing HIS counter melody live on stage, with John on the screen behind him! You can FIND THAT part of the concert on You Tube, (shot by various fans in the crowd at those concerts) INTERESTING little fact, Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson are only TWO DAYS APART IN AGE! Paul born on June 18, 1942 and Brian 2 days later on June 20, 1942. AMAZING since they are considered two of the MOST PROLIFIC composers of the 20th century, especially during the rock and roll era.

This is from the album Pet Sounds which is hailed as one of the best albums ever. In it Brian Wilsons songwriting became more sophisticated. The music is heavily inspired by producer Phil Spectors Wall of Sound which is made by having lots of instruments in the studio playing the same melodies. While Phil Spectors wall of sounds is more angry, Brian Wilson took the same idea and made it beautiful. God Only Knows is a prime example of that and it might not be immediately recognizeable but this was recorded with as many as 19 musicians in the studio at the same time and music from one instrument bleeds into the mic for another instrument which makes the whole wall of sound concept. You have already reacted to By My Baby by the Ronettes which is an example of Phil Spectors Wall of Sound but to get another taste of that you should listen to Da Do Ron Ron by The Crystals which is a prime example of Phil Spectors Wall of Sound. As for more Beach Boys you should check out some of the other songs from Pet Sounds like "I just wasn't made for these times", "Wouldn't it be Nice", "Here Today", or "Caroline No".

Carl Wilson, guitar player and younger brother of Brian Wilson, sang the lead vocal on this. there are so many Beach Boys songs including album cuts...you will go down a deep rabbit hole almost equal to the Beatles. They are so much more than surfing songs. Fast and slow songs, all perfect harmony. Don't Worry Baby, I Get Around, All Summer Long, Caroline No, Sloop John B., California Girls, Help Me Rhonda, Surfer Girl, In My Room, Surf's Up, Little Deuce Coup, Dance Dance Dance, The Little Girl I Once Knew, Fun Fun Fun, Surfin' Safari [their first hit], Kokomo [1987], Heroes and Villains, I Can Hear Music, Barbra Ann, Keep an Eye in Summer, Wendy, just about anything! The Beach Boys Live album [around 1964]. They were one of the few who could face down the Beatles on the charts when the Beatles came out....incidentally they were both on the same label, Capital, in the USA. The British loved them as much as we loved the Beatles, kind of a friendly trade off...

Paul McCartney’s favorite song! That picture was from years before this recording. The lead singer is Carl Wilson. This comes from what is arguably one of THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. It actually influenced The Beatles Sgt. Pepper which also has been called one of the greatest albums as well. The Beach Boys only do vocals on this album the music is all from L.A. session aces known as The Wrecking Crew. Amber good ears! THIS was a huge departure for the band. Brian Wilson had grown weary of surfing and car songs and he wrote a work of genius “Pet Sounds” slightly before this Brian had suffered what incorrectly was called a nervous breakdown. They had no idea what it was back then. At any rate he stopped the brutal touring schedule and stayed home and wrote this awesome album. The band continued touring without Brian. One more thing…this was recorded in 1966!!!!! Only The Beatles Rubber Soul stood out like this at the time. That is the year rock changed, due largely to the influence of Rubber Soul and Pet Sounds. Wilson had a condition that processed sounds differently…a friend of mine has the condition and compared it to dyslexia only to the auditory system but Wilson has the much rarer condition Schizoaffective Disorder which is examined in a movie you guys should review “Love and Mercy” It’s awesome! It’s an unvarnished deep dive into Brian Wilson’s life. Also check out the movie “The Wrecking Crew” about the musicians I mentioned earlier. Brian Wilson was only 23 when he wrote and arranged this. He recorded it with the Wrecking Crew on instruments and the Beach Boys recorded the vocals afterwards.

I think the fact that this recording sounds old school helps invoke a beautiful nostalgic and unifying feeling. Like, "life ... we're all in it together." Songs: Sloop John B, Good Vibrations, Don't Worry Baby, Kokomo, if you haven't done them yet. Most of the famous Beach Boys songs are early Sixties pop songs, like Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Help Me Rhonda, Fun Fun Fun, I Get Around, California Girls, Surfin' Safari, Surfin' USA, and probably a few more. If you want to compare the Beach Boys with the Beatles, listen to Surfin' USA and then the Beatles' "I'm Back in the USSR." (It's the Beatles doing a parody of the Beach Boys.)

The Wrecking Crew was the studio musicians that Brian would use to record all the music. Then the group would come in from touring and Brian would show them all their parts and they would record them. This is Carl Wilson singing on this one. It is hailed as one of the greatest love songs. Brian dictated every single part of this song from strings to percussion. He is an absolute genius. Peace and Love from David in Detroit!

As an old "surfer dude" in the 70s and 80s in California, these guys were ever present in the surf scene though many groups were favorites but the Beach Boys made surfin' a much more popular sport.....

By the time of Pet Sounds, the Beach Boys had pretty much moved on from the beach/surf vibe of their earlier records. Pet Sounds was a highly experimental record, allowing Brian Wilson to really expand his songwriting. This album is often compared to The Beatles' Sgt Pepper album, showing the band at their creative peak. The production is very dense, with lots of instruments that aren't immediately obvious. It took nine months to record. Try listening to Wouldn't It Be Nice or Sloop John B.

The BBC did a cover of this with essentially everyone in British music (and a few Americans, including Brian Wilson himself) singing a single line...it's very cool. My favorite song is "The Sloop John B" which is a very old song, pretty much the best known of their songs that wasn't written by one of them. Al Jardine (one of the members of the band) brought it to Brian and asked him to adapt it.

FYI - Bassist Brian Wilson (far right in the pic) is singing lead and produced the record. Most of the instrumentation was performed by professional session musicians known as the "Wrecking Crew." The band did perform live on stage. It is worth checking out the Wrecking Crew on line and there was a documentary about them. If you want to know why a lot of the 60s music sounded similar, this is one of the reasons why. This is not a knock on the Beach Boys. They were very influential developing the California surfing and hot rod sound. Later on they were in direct competition with the Beatles.

Now that we're back with the Beach Boys, I'd like to recommend a tune to satisfy Amber's love for hippie vibes, something really different from these guys -- a song off the Surf's Up album from 1971: Feel Flows. I first heard it as part of the soundtrack of the film Almost Famous and it blew me away.

This was written by Brian Wilson. The songs he wrote for The Beach Boys stand out among their catalogue. His writing is much more technical and strays away from the typical surf rock doo wop that they're known for, making more use of intricate chord progressions and modulations. He's far up the list of the best songwriters of the 20th century. I agree with Paul McCartney in saying that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
