I'm completely with CGR when it comes to crt tvs, they really are the only way to play anything before the hd era. I happily took a really nice 32 inch trinitron off a friends hands and it is the main hub of all my gaming consoles now.

Agreed! The graphics and music is some of the best EVER in any videogame! And it´s all from the snes processors. Not streamed by a CD. THIS is an impressive game! The music is STUNNING! And not just streamed! ;) It´s MADE by the SNES!!!!

Such a great game. Still holds up today. I wasn't even a fan of spaceship shooters. Such a difficult and challenging game yet always fun. I did finish it all the way but only a few times. The pinnacle of quality video gaming.

Don't care what any of you say, I still think UN Squadron on the SNES is the best shmup I ever played. The way you earned upgrades was fun, the soundtrack set the mood perfectly for every stage, the difficulty on the hard setting was tough as nails but never unfair, the game broke linearity by letting you choose what mission you wanted to play, and the selection of different characters and ships allowed for some replayability. The whole game was just pure FUN.

un squadron was always a game I always wanted to play and have recently had a chance to play the first couple of levels. From what I've played so far it's good but I do find the levels really short.

Love your reviews, Mark. Seeing you play these games (as opposed to just watching a video capture) somehow brings these games to life and makes me want to jump in and play them. Your narration is always witty without trying too hard. Your new broadcast studio looks freaking amazing. I aspire to have a similar man-cave one day. Keep up the great work.

Sometimes graphics, music and gameplay become one. Its one of those games where everything fits together. Its like big blue in f-zero or the colours matching the music in super mario world. Axelay is also an great example for this kind of game. I totally loved it back in the days and still do. Very special game. Great review. True passion.

I just played this for the first time yesterday, and the graphics blew me away. I've never really been a fan of the Mode 7 gimmick. It just always looked pixelated and ugly, but the high resolution and detailed artwork in this game made it actually look 3D, where games like F-Zero and Contra III just make it look like zoomed in pixels. Also, the game is awesome.
@SegaGenesisEvangelion
@SegaGenesisEvangelion 4 жыл бұрын
the effect in the vertical sections here that mark describes as "mode 7" are not actually mode 7 at all. it's a line-animating effect that the genesis can do the exact same way such as in sonic 3d blast. so it makes sense that it doesn't look like f-zero or contra iii which actually use mode 7. mode 7 is used to scale and rotate 2d background layers on a scanline by scanline basis. as you can see in axelay and sonic 3d blast, it's not a single background layer being scaled and rotated but rather as it scrolls the background is being drawn differently each frame. i kinda get why people assume it was done with mode 7 but yeah if you look closely it's a different technique entirely

I actually am not sure the backgrounds are mode 7. There's a similar effect in Contra: Hard Corps: In the part where you're running on the road, check out the dirt to either side of the road and it's doing the same effect. I think you can pull off this effect similar to how other wavey line-by-line fx work. Pretty cool stuff!

Mark is right about CRT TVs and how those are better for retro-gaming. Best place to find a working one in good to excellent condition would be a Good Will store. Found one myself, a 2000 year model RCA 25" CRT very good condition with original remote. Thing looked barely used.

i think the reason why axelay 2 was never released or developed was because that was around the time half the staff from that company went their seperate ways to form treasure( who are responsible for Gunstar Heroes, Light Crusader, Radiant Silvergun) Since treasure had a pact of not creating any sequels. So i guess thats why snes loyalists never got to see Axelay 2 since mostly all the best programmers and graphic designers left to form Treasure.

They actually made HD CTR TVs. You should try to find a Sony KV-30HS420 30-Inch FD Trinitron or some thing similar to get the best of both worlds. They is the perfect TV for retro game set-ups because every thing form pong consoles to the XBox 360 will look good on them and they may still work with many light guns.
